NCEI Webinar on Billion Dollar Disasters

13 November 2020:  Adam Smith, Applied Climatologist with NCEI, provided a U.S. Billion-dollar weather and climate disaster briefing on the latest data, tools and analysis placing these extremes into historical context (1980-2020). He also highlighted how to create state-level examples from these tools to better tailor them for states, regions and stakeholder interest.

NOAA’s NCEI tracks U.S. weather and climate events that have great economic and societal impacts (www.ncdc.noaa.gov/billions). Since 1980, the U.S. has sustained 279 weather and climate disasters where the overall damage costs reached or exceeded $1 billion (including adjustments based on the Consumer Price Index, as of 2020). The cumulative cost for these 279 events exceeds $1.825 trillion.

The latest quarterly update showed that the first 9 months of 2020 has already tied the annual record of 16 events that occurred in 2011 and 2017.  These events included 1 drought event, 11 severe storm events, 3 tropical cyclone events, and 1 wildfire event.  Notably, the 10 August derecho event is at least in the top 4 most costly severe storm events to affect the U.S. since 1980 (when record keeping began).  Final agricultural damages from the derecho have not yet been determined, but current have costs due to this event stand at $7.5B.

Given the increasing prevalence and prominence of these events, you’ll definitely want to be informed.

SciLine Webinar on Science in Journalism

We are proud to partner with the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s (AAAS) SciLine program to offer this webinar on science in journalism.

In this webinar, Meredith Drosback, SciLine Association Director, Science, and Becky Hazen, SciLine Associate Director, News and Operations (bios here) introduce SciLine, a program that connects scientists with journalists seeking expertise and context for their reporting about science, health, and the environment. They share what they’ve learned in recent years about the science journalism ecosystem, discuss the services that SciLine offers scientists and journalists, and describe specific opportunities for members of the AASC community to become involved.

In August of 2019, SciLine conducted a livestream entitled Climate Change: Rising to the Challenge with three of our State Climatologists: Martha Shulski, Justin Glisan and Kathie Dello. You can see the recording here.

So if you are active in outreach on climate matters, or wish to become more so, this webinar is for you.
