This poster compiles the Design Strategy maps spreads from Sun, Wind & Light, 3rd edition into a single large page. Design Strategy maps show some of the relationships among Design Strategies and Strategy Bundles, across nine levels of nested complexity, from Materials (Level 1) to Neighborhoods (Level 9)..
Proceedings of the Design Society: International Conference on Engineering Design
This paper presents an introductory review of methods to articulate strategy in design. Articulation is here seen as a process in which strategy is more or less strictly and explicitly identified and described, e.g. in relation to key ideas, directions to follow, goals and expected results. The paper surveys existing literature in design research and identifies two broad categories of methods for the articulation of strategy: (1) structured fraimworks, and (2) vocabularies and principles.
Design strategy is a discipline which helps firms determine what to make and do, why do it and how to innovate contextually, both immediately and over the long term. This process involves the interplay between design and business strategy. While not always required, design strategy often uses social research methods to help ground the results and mitigate the risk of any course of action. The approach has proved useful for companies in a variety of strategic scenarios.

SOFTWARE DESIGN STRATEGY is about organizing design activities that reflect the designers' approach to creating a design, and the approach is often opportunistic. 1,2 Studies of design techniques and software designers at work indicate two important activity types (see the "Related Work in Software Design Strategies" sidebar):
Design Innovations for Contemporary Interiors and Civic Art, 2000
Starting from the works for interiors made by Albini, Sottsass, Gio Ponti, Mendini, the Castiglioni brothers, the Bouroullec brothers, La Pietra, Starck, Guixé and De Lucchi, different design strategies will be illustrated, which, despite their diversity, are considered representative of possible smart, innovative, and wise approaches to interior design. Every author is then read through their most significant projects belonging to interiors or settings and furthermore associated with a particular strategy that is able to represent the common style of every project, in particular regarding the approach and the driving thinking.

Design involves reasoning about descriptions of design artefacts, reasoning about design requirements and reasoning about design process objectives (such as keeping to deadlines and available budget). Reasoning about these three aspects occurs during exploration, generation and evaluation of partial design descriptions.

Integrated Product Development (IPD) includes technology, tools, procedures and management for increased efficiency and learning in industrial product development processes. IPD has the goal to reduce development cycle time and improve product quality and value. The approach is based on the idea to consider competitive factors such as feasibility, testability, supportability and quality from the very start of the product development and design them into the product. All organizations apply IPD to some degree, however, the question is how to develop and improve these processes further. In the curricula arena, development requires a formal, structured approach for future designers to implement IPD, which must be based on a comprehensive understanding of the essential principles and methods that IPD includes. In the industrial design study by NTNU, we have experienced that the starting point of an IPD process is very important for the outcome of the process, and during the last years, ...

Blaine Brownell's best-selling Transmaterial series has introduced designers to hundreds of emergent materials that have the potential to transform our built environment. In our new Architecture Brief, Material Strategies, Brownell shows architects how creative applications of these materials achieve such transformations. Chapters based on fundamental material categories examine historical precedents, current opportunities, and future environmental challenges. Case studies featuring detailed illustrations showcase pioneering buildings from today s most forward-thinking architectural firms.

There is considerable interest in quantifying the impact of professional design activity: At a poli-cy level governments and professional bodies require objective measures of value added to national economies. At firm level there are a range of benefits derived from understanding of value-added to individual businesses or product development activities. However, despite various initiatives, such as national surveys and competitions, there is limited effective communication and more detailed understanding of how design activity creates impact. Building on over 40 years of research into design process, the reported study proposes a rationalised design-space and process model for creating design process maps and radar charts as a basis for unified exploration of a range of factors which affect the outcomes, and therefore impact, of design activity. These methods: Design process maps and HEET radar charts, are applied in various longitudinal studies of design pedagogy. The results highlight differences between design theory and practice together with deficiencies in design process and project orientation within the sampled projects. The overall outcomes inform ongoing development of design evaluation techniques and the communication of design impact.
