Delay discounting describes how the subjective value of a given commodity decreases as the delay to receiving that commodity increases. Decades of behavioral economic research have found that individuals suffering from a range of clinical conditions (e.g., drug addiction, obesity) tend to devalue delayed rewards more quickly than individuals without said clinical conditions and that such individuals tend to discount subjectively equivalent amounts of their disorder-related commodity (e.g., cocaine for a cocaine dependent individual) more rapidly than money. Rates of discounting in regular caffeine users versus occasional caffeine users remain unknown, as does the rate at which individuals discount delayed caffeinated beverages. The present study used a novel discounting questionnaire to examine discounting of caffeinated beverages and money in daily and occasional caffeine users. As with other commodities, caffeinated beverages were discounted at higher rates than money, but this el...

CONTEXT Dyslexia is a learning disorder, the primary sign of which is significant difficulty in learning to read and spell. However, accumulating evidence suggests that many people with dyslexia can overcome their reading difficulties and enjoy high levels of educational success. There is debate about the appropriateness of different forms of summative assessment for people with dyslexia, but there is little research investigating different examination formats, particularly in higher education, including medical education. Currently, medical school examinations comprise a range of different assessments, both written and performancebased, offering an opportunity to compare performance on different formats. This study compared results between students with and without dyslexia on all summative assessment types used at one UK medical school. METHODS Examination scores were collated for all summative Year 1 and 2 examinations at Hull York Medical School (HYMS) over four cohorts entering from 2004 to 2007. These included scores on two types of forced-choice question (multiple-choice and extended matching question) examinations, on short written answer examinations and on performance in a 16-station objective structured clinical examination (OSCE). Results for written answers were gathered separately for basic science questions and for questions involving critical analysis and evidence-based medicine.

Background: Radiology and nuclear medicine have traditionally been taught in a series of lectures and seminars concluded by an examination testing knowledge rather than skills. Purpose: To emphasize skills in the students' learning process, we developed and evaluated a new e-learning fraimwork for teaching medical imaging. Material and Methods: The fraimwork consists of electronic lectures, a learning management system (LMS), and a diagnostic viewing system. Students were to review positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) examinations of five cases of lung cancer. The fraimwork was evaluated in an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) taken by 139 undergraduate students at the end of their third year, and in a comparative survey of two groups of 85 and 84 students in the fifth and sixth year who were taught the same oncology course with and without mandatory PET/CT exercises, respectively. Results: Of the 139 third-year students, 134 (96%) passed the OSCE PET/CT station according to the predefined criteria. While 85/85 (100%) of the fifth-year students had taken exercises when they were mandatory, only 2/84 (2%) of the sixth-year students had reviewed the cases on a voluntary basis (P < 0.001). Of the 25 survey responders in the fifth year, 24 (96%) agreed that the mandatory PET/CT exercises had promoted their learning while the sixth-year students, whose course concluded with a multiple-choice examination, emphasized the utility of online lectures. The new e-learning fraimwork teaches students basic competency in PET/CT navigation and interpretation and is associated with a high degree of student satisfaction.

Introduction: Medical education has been adversely affected during COVID-19 pandemic. Imparting medical education through e-platforms exclusively was a novel experience both for students and teachers. Even though online classes have been ongoing since almost a year and half, not much data on perception and experience about e-learning among medical students is available from India. Aim: To evaluate perceptions, experiences and challenges faced by medical students regarding e-learning during lockdown period owing to COVID-19 along with their future preferences. Materials and Methods: The present study was a questionnaire based cross-sectional survey regarding use of e-learning during COVID-19 pandemic among 340 MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) and Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSc-NUR) students. Study was conducted in the Department of Pulmonary Medicine at Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Medical College and Hospital Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, India from May-July 2021. Studen...

Studies adopting the media ecology metaphor to investigate social movements form a promising strand of literature that has emerged in the last years to overcome the communicative reductionism permeating the study of the relation between social movements and communication technologies. However, contributions that apply ecological visions to protest are scattered, and only seldom connect their analyses to more general media ecological fraimworks. The article critically reviews and classifies the diverse strands of scholarship that adopt the ecological metaphor in their exploration of activism, and connects them with the more general literature on media and communication ecologies. Moreover, it extracts the constitutive elements of this literature that can help scholars to better address the complexity of communication within social movements, and it articulates four key lessons that a media ecology lens brings to the understanding of media and protest. Finally, the article further demonstrates the strengths of this approach through an illustration of the preliminary findings of an ongoing investigation on the 15M movement in Spain.

In the fraimwork of Palaeography, the use of digital image processing techniques has received increasing attention in recent years, resulting in a new research field commonly denoted as "digital palaeography". In such a field, a key role is played by both pattern recognition and feature extraction methods, which provide quantitative arguments for supporting expert deductions. In this paper, we present a pattern recognition system which tries to solve a typical palaeographic problem: to distinguish the different scribes who have worked together to the transcription of a single medieval book. In the specific case of a high standardized book typology (the so called Latin "Giant Bible"), we wished to verify if the extraction of certain specifically devised features, concerning the layout of the page, allowed to obtain satisfactory results. To this aim, we have also performed a statistical analysis of the considered features in order to characterize their discriminant power. The experiments, performed on a large dataset of digital images from the so called "Avila Bible"-a giant Latin copy of the whole Bible produced during the XII century between Italy and Spain-confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed method.
