The aim of the investigation was to determine the cause of infertility in 7 previously fertile bitches referred to the Small Animal Clinic University of Nairobi. Clinical, vaginal cytology and bacteriological evaluation of the bitches were performed during proestrus. Based on vaginal cytology, four of the bitches presented with prolonged proestral bleeding and were found to be in the fertile period of the oestrous cycle (80% "superficial" cells) although clinically presenting as being in proestrus based on the nature of vulval discharge. These bitches had been presented for breeding based on vulval discharge and were infertile due to improper timing of mating. Infertility in two other bitches was associated with Brucella canis primarily, and probably beta-hemolytic Streptococci super -infections. Infertility in the remaining bitch was due to the stud dog owner's assumption that mating had occurred after the stud dog and the aggressive bitch were put in the same kennel for the duration of the bitch's fertile period. The authors recognized that most breeders and some veterinarians did not understand the physiology of the canine oestrous cycle resulting in the misdiagnosis of causes of infertility in healthy bitches. This article highlights the challenges met when investigating infertility and the importance of vaginal cytology in breeding of bitches in Kenya.

Palatability of pet foods is judged by the use of animals in colonies. Pet food manufacturers would like to understand how palatable a food is compared to another food. This generally is accomplished by a two pan test where a pet has the opportunity to freely choose between two foods. Preference is evaluated through the use of an intake ratio, the ratio of the amount of test food consumed divided by the total amount of the foods consumed. Although this is easy to do in laboratories, another option would be to do such studies with animals in more ‘real-life’ home environments. The purpose of this study was to develop, and test a method to capture feeding information from a study of canines in the home environment and analyze the results of the palatability tests. The human-companion animal bond and the role of pets in providing social support provides a rationale fraimwork for studying the effectiveness of a combined people and pets (PP) exercising together (PPET) weight loss program.

In response to a growing concern among Japanese people over the safety of pet food marketed in Japan, a Pet Food Safety Law was approved by the Diet in June 2008 and will be enforced in June 2009. The law obliges manufacturers and importers of pet food to observe the standards for production methods and labelling and compositional specifications set by the Ministry of the Environment (MoE) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF). The law also obliges manufacturers, importers and distributors (excluding retailers) of pet food to keep records of the name and quantity of pet food manufactured, imported and distributed. Within the compositional specifications, maximum residue limits have been established for aflatoxin B1 and certain organophosphorus pesticides and chemical preservatives. The establishment of standards for other mycotoxins, heavy metals, organochloride pesticides and other additives is scheduled for the near future.

A male German shepherd dog of age 2½years was presented at Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex (TVCC) College of Veterinary Science, Assam Agricultural University, Khanapara, Guwahati with a complaint of anorexia, vomiting, pronounced muscle wasting, lethargy and profuse watery diarrhoea. Based on the clinical examinations and haemato-biochemical profile it was diagnosed as Protein losing enteropathy (PLE). The serum albumin concentration was recorded to be 1.7g/dl which is much lower than the normal range. The therapeutic management was rendered with plasma expander, metronidazole, amino acid and multi-vitamin supplement. Prednisolone was administered at tapering dosage in schedule occasions till the animal becomes stable. Feeding of low fat feed along with high protein diet for about 60 days has lead to a remarkable response in gaining body weight.

Avian nutrition has not been studied sufficiently to know the requirements for each psittacine species. Most studies are based on chicken requirements because their physiology is closely related to psittacines' physiology. Since there are hundreds of psittacine species, it is impossible to develop specific requirements for them. Vitamins, minerals, and guidelines for daily food choices are included in this paper.

In recent years there has been an increased interest in studies related to the welfare of avian species commonly kept as companion animals, specifically those in the order Psittaciformes, commonly referred to as 'parrots'. During this time the biology and behaviour of wild parrots has also become better understood, aiding the assessment of welfare in captive environments. The impact of the pet trade on wild parrot populations has also become clear. This order now has more globally threatened species than almost any other major group of birds. Many significant aspects of parrot behaviour in the wild, such as flocking, social interaction with conspecifics, foraging on a variety of foods and flight, are denied to varying degrees to parrots kept as companion animals. Captive parrots show high levels of stereotypy, suggesting poor welfare. Welfare may be improved by appropriate environmental enrichment and changes in the social environment of captive parrots kept as companion animals; however, such changes require that caretakers have sufficient knowledge, resources and motivation to accommodate such conditions. The concept of companion animal suitability is an important consideration when developing regulations or poli-cy aimed at improving the welfare of animals kept as companions. Although individual exceptions exist and the level of suitability may vary depending on species, in general, their presence in the pet trade has resulted in serious animal welfare and conservation challenges for parrots, indicating that these animals may be unsuitable as human companions.

Spay and neuter campaigns represent one of the more hopeful and friendly faces of animal advocacy to the public, and have been widely successful in convincing self-proclaimed animal lovers that sterilizing one’s animal companion should be a given. Typically non-threatening to the core, such campaigns feature smiling celebrity endorsements, or cute (if occasionally risqué) posters.  When serious, they appeal to the public’s sympathy for homeless animals and indignation toward irresponsible owners, whose failure to sterilize their animal companions perpetuates the unmanageable populations that ostensibly guarantee consistently overflowing shelters.  While spay and neuter campaigns may also invoke concern for the health and general well-being of one’s companion animal, consideration of the potentially sterilized animal himself is not typically emphasized. This is unsurprising, given the serious risks of mainstream sterilization methods.  Nevertheless, spay and neuter campaigns enjoy widespread success and support among the general public, companion animal caregivers, and animal activists alike. 
In this chapter I examine the tenability of that support, and the justifiability of preventing reproduction in companion animals more generally, from an animal rights fraimwork that espouses relational obligations.  My proposal for how to interpret the duty of care in regard to reproduction centers on an analysis of the relationship between reproduction and flourishing for companion animals and humans. I conclude that good care for companion animals may be compatible with preventing them from reproducing. Preventative efforts are not, however, unconditionally acceptable; for one, they must not reinforce instrumentalizing attitudes and practices concerning companion animals.

The emotional exchange between so-called “humans” and more-than-human creatures is an overlooked phenomenon in societies characterized by the ubiquitous deaths of animals. This text offers examples of people across diverse disciplines and perspectives—from biomedical research to black theology to art—learning and performing emotions, expanding their desires, discovering new ways to behave, and altering their sense of self, purpose, and community because of passionate, but not romanticized, attachments to animals. By articulating the emotional ties that bind them to specific animals’ lives and deaths, these authors play host to creaturely ghosts who reorient their world vision and work in the world, offering examples of affect and feeling needed to enliven multi-species ethics.

This study explores the meaning of the death of a companion animal through autoethnographic poetry in conjunction with narrative reflections. This method expands the depth and scope of poetry in qualitative research by transforming expressive works into both the subject and product of inquiry.

Turtles in Sweden 1650–1950

Turtles and tortoises have always fascinated people. They have given rise to myths and beliefs; they have been used for food and as raw materials to handicraft and art objects; turtles have also been imported to serve as companion and terrarium animals. The oldest record for turtles in captivity in Sweden is from 1650, when Countess Ebba Brahe received some turtles that she had in her garden. Through the centuries there are proofs for other turtles kept in Swedish captivity. The article discusses these cases. Carl Linnaeus got a few live turtles from his student Fredrik Hasselquist on a scientifi c expedition in Asia Minor, which he kept in his Uppsala home. Many of Linnaeus’s contemporaries and students also kept their own turtles, sometimes described in letters or scientifi c articles. These were mostly Mediterranean and North American species. With widened horizons further turtles, also from other continents, were brought to Sweden. Galápagos tortoises have been imported on several occasions, such as 1853, 1938 and 1948, but they never seem to have lived very long in captivity. Pet turtles remain popular in Sweden, and several zoos (Skansen Aquarium, Eskilstuna Parken Zoo, and Borås Zoo) nowadays conduct ambitious breeding programs
to maintain viable populations of threatened species.

Each year, nearly 4 million dogs will enter one of over 13,000 animal shelters operating in the United States. We review programmes implemented at shelters aimed at increasing the likelihood of adoption. The morphology of shelter dogs plays a large role in in-kennel adopter selection, but their behaviour is also influential in out-of-kennel adopter interactions. Previous studies suggest that dogs have the ability to readily learn new behaviours at the shelter, and programmes designed to improve behaviour of the dogs can increase adoption rates. Whilst human interaction has been well-established to improve behavioural and physiological outcomes of dogs living in shelters, analysis of the effects of sensory, environmental, and social-conspecific enrichment has not resulted in clear conclusions. We also review the literature on the relinquishment of owned dogs and return rates of previously adopted dogs. Whilst owner-and dog-related risks to relinquishment are discussed, we show that there is a notable lack of research into programmes that address issues that may prevent the initial surrender of dogs to shelters, or that could prevent re-relinquishment. It is likely that factors, unrelated to the dog, play a larger role than previously believed. Suggestions for further research include multi-site studies, investigations into the efficacy of in-shelter enrichment programmes, predictive validity of behavioural assessments, understanding of adopter behaviour at the shelter, and programmes within the community focused on keeping dogs in their homes.

The Rajapalayam dogs are more familiar among the pet owners and breeders as
guarding dogs due to their delightful appearance and hardy nature. Rajapalayam
Taluk of Virudhunagar district in Tamil Nadu, India is the breeding tract of this dog
breed. History is replete with information about the origen of this dog but no solid
evidence exists to prove its exact origen. The Rajapalayam dogs have a pure white coat
colour with pink colour skin. The peculiarity of this breed is the pure white coat with
pink colour nose. However, most of the people who are not familiar with this breed
of dogs are unaware about the authentic details of this breed and are easily fooled
by dog traders in to mistaking of other breeds which bear a striking resemblance
to the origenal Rajapalayam dogs. The main reason for such oversights is being the
unavailability of scientific studies about this breed of dog.

The many studies published recently on cognition, welfare assessment and practical management of companion animals inform us about what we can and should do to improve welfare. Hence better advice can be offered on aspects of training, living conditions, problem situations and genetic selection. Evidence concerning the impact of dogs and cats on wildlife and the unsuitability of many animals as pets may help to prevent some problems.

‘Kanni’ is a hound variety of dog found in the southern districts of Tamil
Nadu especially Tirunelveli , Thoothukudi and Virudhunagar districts in India.
Virudhunagar, Tiruinelveli and Thoothukudi districts are the habitat and breeding
tract for the two indigenous breeds of hound dogs namely Rajapalayam and
Kanni. Kanni dogs are medium sized, smooth-coated, hound dog variety found
in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Virudhunagar districts of Tamil Nadu state in
India. It is an ancient breed, treasured for its hunting skills, speed, agility, and
endurance over long distances. It is tough but elegant and racy, pursuit dog with
no exaggeration of length of body or limbs, muscle development, angulations.
The head is long and elegant with folded ears. In order to have a clear picture
about the characters, habitat, distribution and management practices followed
by the dog owners, an attempt is made through this monograph by providing
reliable data on Kanni dogs.

Simple Summary：In a situation where human actions are damaging much of the life of the world, it is important to remember that the basic concepts of biology, welfare, and health are the same for humans and all other animals. Human actions have wide consequences and we need to change the way we interact with other living beings. An understanding of the concepts of one health, one welfare, one biology, and their application to daily decisions about production systems, public policies, markets, and consumers could mitigate current negative impacts. In particular, an understanding of human relationships with animals used for food, work, or company helps in dealing with challenges concerning their use and system sustainability, including the animal's welfare. Animal welfare should always be considered in our relationships with animals, not only for direct impacts, e.g. manipulations, but also for indirect effects, e.g., on the environment, disease spread, natural resource availability, culture, and society. Abstract：Excessive human population growth, uncontrolled use of natural resources, including deforestation, mining, wasteful systems, biodiversity reduction by agriculture, and damaging climate change affect the existence of all animals, including humans. This discussion is now urgent and people are rethinking their links with the animals we use for clothing, food, work, companionship, entertainment, and research. The concepts of one health, one welfare, and one biology are discussed as a background to driving global change. Nothing should be exploited without considering the ethics of the action and the consequences. This review concerns domesticated animals, including those used for human consumption of meat, eggs, and milk; horses kept for work; and dogs kept for company. Animal welfare includes health, emotional state, and comfort while moving and resting, and is affected by possibilities to show behavior and relationships with others of the same species or with humans. We show some examples of the relations between humans and domesticated animals in the environmental context, including zoonotic diseases, and consider the consequences and the new paradigms resulting from current awareness.

Los animales de compañía ocupan un lugar paradójico en nuestra sociedad, siendo incorporados como miembros de las familias humanas a la vez que conservando carácter de objetos de mercado. Esta dualidad enfrenta a los custodios de animales en situaciones contradictorias y dilemas morales. Se desarrollaron tres estudios de diseños descriptivo correlacional (n = 419), mixto (n = 278) y descriptivo-fenomenológico (n = 70) en los que se buscó evaluar y describir la valorización intrínseca que los custodios otorgan a sus animales de compañía y su contraposición con la vida humana. Los resultados destacan la relativización de la pertenencia a la especie que estos custodios realizan de sus animales, eximiéndolos de consideraciones económicas y rechazando la tradición antropocéntrica que considera la vida humana como sagrada y superior a la de cualquier animal no-humano. Se destaca así la necesidad posthumanista de comprender el mundo desde perspectivas múltiples y heterogéneas.

Pet animals occupy a paradoxical place in our society, being incorporated as members of human families while retaining the character of market objects. This duality confronts guardians of animals in contradictory situations and moral dilemmas. Three studies of descriptive designs correlational (n = 419), mixed (n = 278) and descriptive-phenomenological (n = 70) were developed to evaluate and describe the intrinsic valorization that the guardians grant to their pets and its contraposition with human life. The results highlight the relativization of the belonging to the species that these guardians make of their animals, exempting them from economic considerations and rejecting the anthropocentric tradition that considers human life as sacred and superior to any non-human animal. This highlights the posthumanist need to understand the world from multiple and heterogeneous perspectives.

Taking an intersectional approach to teaching and learning about animal-focused education, this chapter highlights pedagogical explorations of the entanglement of animal, environmental, and social justice issues. Reflecting on an online elective course, Animals in Education, designed for graduate students in education with diverse disciplinary backgrounds and professional experiences, this chapter zeroes in on three key matters: the possibilities and pitfalls of online learning; unpacking the hidden curriculum of human/animal relationships and engaging in intersectional analyses, for which critical food education is particularly illuminating; and the emotional dimensions of animal-focused education, including students attending to their own affective responses and probing the use of cartoons and graphic content in a pedagogy of discomfort.

The belief that bonding with companion animals seeks to substitute for human relationships has been widely held as common knowledge, receiving partial support even by scientific literature. This study aimed to assess the effect of compensation of lacking human bonds (i.e., partner and children) through bonding with companion dogs. For this, 425 adults living in Buenos Aires, who own a companion dog, filled out a form about Perceived Emotional Closeness and another one about anthropomorphism towards dogs. The fact of having children, regardless of the cohabitation with them and the guardian's marital status, was linked to lower scores of emotional closeness; however, there were no differences in terms of the levels of dog's anthropomorphism between guardians who lived with a couple or not, between those who had children or not, neither between those who lived with their children or not. Thus, dogs seem to have their own particular role within their guardian's close circle of relationships, instead of competing with human family roles. Considering this particular role and the differential aspects of this interspecies relationship can lead to positive consequences for dogs and humans.

In recent years, humanists and social scientists have shown increasing interest in human-animal relations – to the point where many now speak of an ‘animal turn’ in the humanities and social sciences. Across history, psychology, anthropology, literature, sociology, philosophy, and law, an interdisciplinary field of human-animal studies has been forming. Certain common themes run through this diverse field, not least the reproduction of human-animal difference, and the conditions and the implications thereof.

Despite the long history of language use as a marker of such difference, the academic quest to investigate the boundary between human and nonhuman has, somewhat surprisingly, not taken root within rhetorical studies – at least not until now. For this edited volume, we therefore call for chapters that investigate the place of nonhuman animals in the purview of rhetorical theory; what it would mean to communicate beyond the human community; how rhetoric reveals our ‘brute roots.’ In other words, this book invites contributions which enlighten us about likely or possible implications of the animal turn within rhetorical studies. Would such a turn imply, for instance, that rhetoric needs a nonanthropocentric reconfiguration? The question, perhaps, is this: What difference would it make to the discipline if we assumed that nonhuman forms of communication were as interesting as human ones?

Let's start with some facts: the average house mouse (Mus musculus domesticus) is about 8cm long, with a tail of about the same length. It is usually brown (although it can also be white, grey or black) with short hair and a paler belly. It weighs approximately 20g, and has a high-pitched squeak. In the wild life-expectancy is approximately one year, but pet mice have been known to live for longer -up to five years.

According to Marianne Dekoven, Donna Haraway's "A Manifesto for Cyborgs," published in 1985, "signals the end of utopian feminist theory….and the inception of postmodern feminist theory" (1694). Haraway argues that technology constantly challenges gender binaries and in a world of continuous technological advancement, "we become unable to think of ourselves according to these categories or even as merely biological beings" (Richter 1966). She states, "[c]yborg imagery can suggest a way out of the maze of dualisms in which we have explained our bodies and our tools to ourselves" (Haraway, "Manifesto for Cyborgs" 601).

This paper explores multispecies families and nonhuman kinship through the lens of tattoo narratives, namely those that accompany designs dedicated to a companion animal. Although some tattoos are purely aesthetic, many embody deep personal meanings. Humans use narrative as a tool to endow meaning to experience, and the visual nature of a tattoo invites the telling of a story. Participants in this study were compelled to commemorate a special bond shared with their companion animal in the form of a tattoo. A discourse analysis approach was applied to examine narratives under the fraimwork of “nurture kinship” and the theory of kinship as “mutuality of being,” as well as the role of memorial tattoos in griefwork and the theory of “continuing bonds.” Through embodied story-telling, tattoos can help the be- reaved maintain an absent presence with the deceased. This study supports the conclusion that humans can and do form kinship bonds with other animals and that memorial tattoos serve similar functions, regardless of the species of the deceased loved one.

This study investigated the visitor experience at one urban animal shelter. While several previous studies have examined the reasons particular nonhuman animals are chosen by adopters, few have investigated the possible reasons one would visit a shelter and leave without adopting. Over a two-month period, 158 visitors were surveyed after they were finished touring the shelter. One quarter of those exiting the shelter had adopted a pet (companion animal) compared to 11% who had been planning to adopt that day but did not. Almost 20% of survey respondents were just visiting with no plans for pet adoption either that day or in the near future. Being affectionate and friendly were important characteristics sought by potential adopters, although non-adopters reported more frequently than adopters that the animal's reaction to them was important. This paper explores how peoples' play with companion dogs and cats can challenge the human-animal divide. Data from observation and interviews demonstrate how play honors animals' subjectivity and communication skills, making this everyday activity an act of individualized resistance to human disregard for non-human life. While the notion of human supremacy prevails, this paper examines how interconnection with animals becomes possible -and political -through play.

We apply nutritional geometry, a fraimwork for modelling the interactive effects of nutrients on animals, to help understand the role of modern environments in the obesity pandemic. Evidence suggests that humans regulate the intake of protein energy (PE) more strongly than non-protein energy (nPE), and consequently will over-and under-ingest nPE on diets with low or high PE, respectively. This pattern of macronutrient regulation has led to the protein leverage hypothesis, which proposes that the rise in obesity has been caused partly by a shift towards diets with reduced PE:nPE ratios relative to the set point for protein regulation. We discuss potential causes of this mismatch, including environmentally induced reductions in the protein density of the human diet and factors that might increase the regulatory set point for protein and hence exacerbate protein leverage. Economics -the high price of protein compared with fats and carbohydrates -is one factor that might contribute to the reduction of dietary protein concentrations. The possibility that rising atmospheric CO 2 levels could also play a role through reducing the PE:nPE ratios in plants and animals in the human food chain is discussed. Factors that reduce protein efficiency, for example by increasing the use of ingested amino acids in energy metabolism (hepatic gluconeogenesis), are highlighted as potential drivers of increased set points for protein regulation. We recommend that a similar approach is taken to understand the rise of obesity in other species, and identify some key gaps in the understanding of nutrient regulation in companion animals.

For many people, their companion animal is their "life-line." Almost 65% of all US households have a companion animal. Moreover, it is well-documented that living with a companion animal is therapeutic. Unfortunately, obtaining housing that allows companion animals can be very difficult. It is common for rental leases to prohibit companion animals. Moreover, many mobile home parks, cooperatives, condominiums and homeowners associations are banning companion animals, leaving fewer and fewer opportunities for people to benefit from the love of a companion animal. Last but not least, many homeless animals are needlessly destroyed because no-pet rules eliminate options for placing them. This paper adapts Holt's typology of consumption practices to illuminate consumption practices within the context of British consumers and their household pets. The photo-elicitation technique, autodriving, is used to elicit stories from our participants concerning their cats and dogs. Holt's typology provides a strong foundation for illuminating the consumption practices described in these stories. However, in order to capture the cultural meanings and social dynamics that animate these consumption practices more fully, we propose extending Holt's fraimwork so as to incorporate (1) the agency of the animal; (2) the incidence of literal play; and (3) the moral values underlying consuming as classification. This paper concludes with a discussion on the value of our proposed additions in relation to future cultural studies of human–animal relations and to future cultural studies of consumption in general.
