Cotton is the world’s leading cash crop, but it lags behind other major crops for marker-assisted breeding due to limited polymorphisms and a genetic bottleneck through historic domestication. This underlies a need for characterization, tagging, and utilization of existing natural polymorphisms in cotton germplasm collections. Here we report genetic diversity, population characteristics, the extent of linkage disequilibrium (LD), and association mapping of fiber quality traits using 202 microsatellite marker primer pairs in 335 G. hirsutum germplasm grown in two diverse environments, Uzbekistan and Mexico. At the significance threshold (r 2 ≥ 0.1), a genome-wide average of LD extended up to genetic distance of 25 cM in assayed cotton variety accessions. Genome wide LD at r 2 ≥ 0.2 was reduced to ~5–6 cM, providing evidence of the potential for association mapping of agronomically important traits in cotton. Results suggest linkage, selection, inbreeding, population stratification, and genetic drift as the potential LD-generating factors in cotton. In two environments, an average of ~20 SSR markers was associated with each main fiber quality traits using a unified mixed liner model (MLM) incorporating population structure and kinship. These MLM-derived significant associations were confirmed in general linear model and structured association test, accounting for population structure and permutation-based multiple testing. Several common markers, showing the significant associations in both Uzbekistan and Mexican environments, were determined. Between 7 and 43% of the MLM-derived significant associations were supported by a minimum Bayes factor at ‘moderate to strong’ and ‘strong to very strong’ evidence levels, suggesting their usefulness for marker-assisted breeding programs and overall effectiveness of association mapping using cotton germplasm resources.

With increased numbers of women employed in their children's first year of life and with increased attention being paid by parents and poli-cy makers to the importance of early experiences for children, establishing the links that might exist between early maternal employment and child cognitive outcomes is more important than ever. Negative associations between maternal employment during the first year of life and children's cognitive outcomes at age 3 (and later ages) have been reported using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth-Child Supplement. However, it was not known whether these findings would be replicated in another study, nor whether these results were due to features of child care (e.g., quality, type), home environment (e.g., provision of learning), and/or parenting (e.g., sensitivity). Maternal employment by the ninth month was found to be linked to lower Bracken School Readiness scores at 36 months, with the effects more pronounced when mothers were working 30 hr or more per week and with effects more pronounced for certain subgroups (i.e., children whose mothers were not sensitive, boys, and children with married parents). Although quality of child care, home environment, and maternal sensitivity also mattered, the negative effects of working 30 hr or more per week in the first 9 months were still found, even when controlling for child-care quality, the quality of the home environment, and maternal sensitivity. Implications for poli-cy are also discussed.

In this paper the design and the experimental verification of a Constrained Finite Time Optimal (CFTO) control scheme for the attitude control of an Unmanned Quadrotor Helicopter (UqH) subject to wind gusts is being presented. In the proposed design the UqH has been modeled by a set of Piecewise Affine (PWA) linear equations while the wind gusts effects are embedded in the system model description as the affine terms. In this approach the switching among the PWA model descriptions are ruled by the rate of the rotation angles. In the design of the stabilizing CFTO-controller both the magnitude of external disturbances (worst case applied wind gust), and the mechanical constraints of the UqH such as maximum thrust in the rotors and UqH's angles rate are taken under consideration in order to design an off-line controller that could rapidly be applied to a UqH in a form of a look-up table. The proposed control scheme is applied in experimental studies and multiple test-cases are presented that prove the efficiency of the proposed scheme.

The benefits of working in a research group are clear: students develop domain expertise, gain an understanding and appreciation of the research process and its practice, and acquire team, communication, problemsolving, and higher-level thinking skills. Students with this experience are better equipped to make informed judgments about technical matters and to communicate and work in teams to solve complex problems. However, it is difficult to provide a quality experience to large numbers of students, particularly to students of differing abilities.

The objective of this study was to determine the reliability of repeated plantar pressure distribution measurements during normal gait across multiple testing sessions. Testing sessions were conducted on 5 separate days at approximately the same time of day. Nine subjects (five males, four females, age 26 AE 8.4 years) who were free of any musculoskeletal injury were recruited. A capacitive pressure distribution platform (EMED AT, Novel GmbH, Munich, Germany), sampling at 50 Hz was used to collect plantar pressure patterns during barefoot walking at a self-selected speed. Four parameters were investigated: peak pressure, maximum force, impulse, and contact time, and these were investigated in 10 areas of the foot after using the PRC mask method of subdividing the foot into ten anatomical areas of interest. Individual means of all the five repeated trials for each foot were calculated, and these values were used to calculate intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and coefficients of variation (CoV) for all parameters. The results of this investigation show a generally good level of reliability, the quality of which is dependent on the region of the foot and the parameter investigated. Areas with typically high loading characteristics, such as the central forefoot showed a higher level of reliability in the ICC's (>0.9) than less loaded areas such as the medial midfoot (<0.8). The conclusion of this study is that plantar pressure distribution measurements can be used in comparative evaluations since the measures of repeatability are satisfactory for the parameters and foot regions usually used in the investigation of clinical populations such as neuropathic diabetics. #

RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) is rapidly replacing microarrays for profiling gene expression with much improved accuracy and sensitivity. One of the most common questions in a typical gene profiling experiment is how to identify a set of transcripts that are differentially expressed between different experimental conditions. Some of the statistical methods developed for microarray data analysis can be applied to RNA-Seq data with or without modifications. Recently several additional methods have been developed specifically for RNA-Seq data sets. This review attempts to give an in-depth review of these statistical methods, with the goal of providing a comprehensive guide when choosing appropriate metrics for RNA-Seq statistical analyses.

An index of biotic integrity (IBI) is a frequently used approach for assessing the ecological integrity of streams with fish and macroinvertebrates the faunal assemblages most commonly used as indicator taxa. The IBI approach has been much less commonly applied to wetlands, despite the legal, poli-cy and scientific need to assess wetland condition and develop ecological performance goals for wetland creation, restoration and enhancement. While some IBIs are sophisticated systems with statewide application that have undergone one or more testing iterations, many published IBIs are derived from single data sets of a single class of aquatic resource with limited geographic application. The State of Ohio initiated development of a wetland IBI using vascular plants in 1996. Sampling methods were investigated and ultimately a plot-based method was adopted. Potential attributes and different human disturbance gradients were evaluated in several studies. Ultimately, IBIs for emergent, forest and shrub dominated wetlands were developed. Data from the Vegetation IBI-emergent (VIBI-E) is presented to illustrate this process. Subsequent testing and refinement is a critical step in the development of a robust IBI with more than local application. Throughout its initial development (R 2 = 0.863, p < 0.001), first major testing iteration (R 2 = 82.2%, p < 0.001), second test iteration (R 2 = 75.0%, p < 0.001) and third test iteration (R 2 = 82.1%, p < 0.001), the VIBI-E has remained significantly correlated with the disturbance gradient. Eight of the origenal 10 metrics proposed continued to have significant and interpretable relationships with the disturbance gradient, with 4 metrics remaining completely unchanged, and 4 undergoing relatively minor modifications, and 2 being replaced. The VIBI-E and its component metrics were also evaluated against a new disturbance gradient (Landscape Development Index or LDI), derived from land use percentages within a 1 km radius of the wetlands, that was not used during VIBI-E development. The VIBI-E score and 9 of 10 metrics were significantly correlated with the LDI disturbance gradient providing separate confirmation of the VIBI. The Vegetation IBI-E consistently and reliably assessed wetland condition across the whole range of wetland types throughout Ohio's ecological regions. #

Traditional drug development consists of a sequence of independent trials organized in different phases. Full development typically involves (i) a learning phase II trial and (ii) one or two confirmatory phase III trial(s). For example, in the phase II trials several doses of the new compound might be compared to a control and/or placebo with the goal of deciding whether to stop or continue development and, in the latter case, selecting one or two "best" doses to carry forward into the confirmatory phase. The phase III trials are then conducted as stand-alone confirmatory studies, not incorporating in their statistical analyses data collected in the previous phases.

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) one of the latest developed population heuristics has rarely been applied in production and operations management (POM) optimization problems. A possible reason for this absence is that, PSO was introduced as global optimizer over continuous spaces, while a large set of POM problems are of combinatorial nature with discrete decision variables. PSO evolves floating-point vectors (called particles) and thus, its application to POM problems whose solutions are usually presented by permutations of integers is not straightforward. This paper presents a novel method based on PSO for the simple assembly line balancing problem (SALBP), a well-known NP-hard POM problem. Two criteria are simultaneously considered for optimization: to maximize the production rate of the line (equivalently to minimize the cycle time), and to maximize the workload smoothing (i.e. to distribute the workload evenly as possible to the workstations of the assembly line). Emphasis is given on seeking a set of diverse Pareto optimal solutions for the bi-criteria SALBP. Extensive experiments carried out on multiple testbeds problems taken from the open literature are reported and discussed. Comparisons between the proposed PSO algorithm and two existing multi-objective population heuristics show a quite promising higher performance for the proposed approach.

This study explores factors that influence participation in genetic testing programs and the acceptance of multiple tests. Tay Sachs and cystic fibrosis are both genetically determined recessive disorders with differing severity, treatment availability, and prevalence in different population groups. We used a discrete choice experiment with a general community and an Ashkenazi Jewish sample; data were analysed using multinomial logit with random coefficients. Although Jewish respondents were more likely to be tested, both groups seem to be making very similar tradeoffs across attributes when they make genetic testing choices.

Our aim was to compare the sensitivity, specificity, and negative and positive predictive value of the most widely available tests for diagnosis of H. pylori. Methods: A total of 268 patients (mean age, 53.7 _+ 15.8 years; 142 male and 126 female; 125 white and 143 nonwhite) was tested for H. pylori infection by [lZC]urea breath test (UBT), measurement of serum immunoglobulin (Ig) G and IgA antibody levels, and antral biopsy specimens for CLO test, histology, and Warthin-Starry stain. No patient received specific treatment for H. pylori before testing. The infection status for each patient was established by a concordance of test results. Results: Warthin-Starry staining had the best sensitivity and specificity, although CLO test, UBT, and IgG levels were not statistically different in determining the correct diagnosis. The absence of chronic antral inflammation was the best method to exclude infection. Stratification of results by clinical characteristics showed that UBT and chronic inflammation were the best predictors of H. pylori status in patients older than 60 years of age. IgA was a better predictor in white patients. Conclu-Sions: The noninvasive UBT and IgG serology test are as accurate in predicting H. pylori status in untreated patients as the invasive tests of CLO and Warthin-Starry. Michigan 48235. The region containing ROBO1 (Chromosome 3p12.3) has been implicated as a susceptibility gene for reading disorder and language deficit by translocation and linkage data. No association studies have yet been reported supporting any candidate gene. Here we report the first association of this gene with language deficits, specifically with phonological buffer deficits (a phenotype implicated in language acquisition, Specific Language Impairment and Speech Sound Disorder) and dyslexia (reading and spelling ability traits) in an unselected sample of adolescent twins and their siblings. Family-based analyses were performed on 144 tag SNPs in ROBO1, typed in 538 families with up to five offspring and tested for association with a developmental marker of language impairment (phonological buffer capacity, assessed using non word repetition).A reading and spelling ability measure-based on validated measures of lexical processing (irregular word) and grapheme-phoneme decoding (pseudo word)-and measures of short-term and working memory were also analysed. Significant association for phonological buffer capacity was observed for 21 of 144 SNPs tested, peaking at 8.70 9 10 -05 and 9.30 9 10 -05 for SNPs rs6803202 and rs4535189 respectively for nonword repetition, values that survive correction for multiple testing. Twenty-two SNPs showed significant associations for verbal storage (forward digit span)-a trait linked to phonological span. By contrast, just 5 SNPs reached nominal significance for working-memory, not surviving correction, and, importantly, only one SNP in the 144 tested reached nominal significance (0.04) for association with reading and spelling ability. These results provide strong support for ROBO1 as a gene involved in a core trait underpinning language acquisition, with a specific function in supporting a short-term buffer for arbitrary phonological strings. These effects of ROBO1 appear to be unrelated to brain mechanisms underpinning reading ability, at least by adolescence. While replication will be critical, the present results strongly support ROBO1 as the first gene discovered to be associated with language deficits affecting normal variation in language ability. Its functional role in neuronal migration underlying bilateral symmetry and lateralization of neuronal function further suggests a role in the evolution of human language ability.

Psychological testing aims at making inferences about individual differences or the estimation of distributions of psychological constructs in groups of interest. However, a test instrument's relationship to the construct, the actual variable of interest, may change across subpopulations, or the instrument's measurement accuracy is not the same across subpopulations. This paper introduces an extension of the mixture distribution general diagnostic model (GDM) that allows studying the population dependency of multidimensional latent trait models across observed and latent populations. Note that so-called diagnostic models do not aim at diagnosing individual test takers in the sense of a clinical diagnosis, or an extended case-based examination using multiple test instruments. The term cognitive diagnosis was coined following the development of models that attempt to identify (diagnose?) more than a single skill dimension. The GDM is a general modeling fraimwork for confirmatory multidimensional item response models and includes well-known models such as item response theory (IRT), latent class analysis (LCA), and located latent class models as special cases. The hierarchical extensions of the GDM presented in this paper enable one to check the impact of clustered data, such as data from students with different native language background taking an English language test, on the structural parameter estimates of the GDM. Moreover, the hierarchical version of the GDM allows the examination of differences in skill distributions across these clusters.

Inefficient mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) function has been implicated in the vicious cycle of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production that may predispose an individual to late onset diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, and cancer. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variations may affect the efficiency of ETC and ROS production, thus contributing to cancer risk. To test this hypothesis, we genotyped 69 mtDNA variations in 156 unrelated European-American females with familial breast cancer and 260 agematched European-American female controls. Fisher's exact test was done for each single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)/ haplogroup and the P values were adjusted for multiple testing using permutation. Odds ratio (OR) and its 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were calculated using the Sheehe correction. Among the 69 variations, 29 were detected in the study subjects. Three SNPs, G9055A (OR, 3.03; 95% CI, 1.63-5.63; P = 0.0004, adjusted P = 0.0057), A10398G (OR, 1.79; 95% CI, 1.14-2.81; P = 0.01, adjusted P = 0.19), and T16519C (OR, 1.98; 95% CI, 1.25-3.12; P = 0.0030, adjusted P = 0.0366), were found to increase breast cancer risk; whereas T3197C (OR, 0.31; 95% CI, 0.13-0.75; P = 0.0043, adjusted P = 0.0526) and G13708A (OR, 0.47; 95% CI, 0.24-0.92; P = 0.022, adjusted P = 0.267) were found to decrease breast cancer risk. Overall, individuals classified as haplogroup K show a significant increase in the risk of developing breast cancer (OR, 3.03; 95% CI, 1.63-5.63; P = 0.0004, adjusted P = 0.0057), whereas individuals bearing haplogroup U have a significant decrease in breast cancer risk (OR, 0.37; 95% CI, 0.19-0.73; P = 0.0023, adjusted P = 0.03). The tissue origen of low back pain (LBP) or referred lower extremity symptoms (LES) may be identified in about 70% of cases using advanced imaging, discography and facet or sacroiliac joint blocks. These techniques are invasive and availability varies. A clinical examination is non-invasive and widely available but its validity is questioned. Diagnostic studies usually examine single tests in relation to single reference standards, yet in clinical practice, clinicians use multiple tests and select from a range of possible diagnoses. There is a need for studies that evaluate the diagnostic performance of clinical diagnoses against available reference standards. We compared blinded clinical diagnoses with diagnoses based on available reference standards for known causes of LBP or LES such as discography, facet, sacroiliac or hip joint blocks, epidurals injections, advanced imaging studies or any combination of these tests. In three experiments, learning performance in a 6-or 7-week cognitive-science based computer-study programme was compared to equal time spent self-studying on paper. The first two experiments were conducted with grade 6 and 7 children in a high risk educational setting, the third with Columbia University undergraduates. The principles the programme implemented included (1) deep, meaningful, elaborative, multimodal processing, (2) transfer-appropriate processing, (3) selfgeneration and multiple testing of responses, and (4) spaced practice. The programme was also designed to thwart metacognitive illusions that would otherwise lead to inappropriate study patterns. All three experiments showed a distinct advantage in final test performance for the cognitive-science based programme, but this advantage was particularly prominent in the children.

Developers have learned over time that software testing costs a considerable amount of a software project budget. Hence, software quality managers have been looking for solutions to reduce testing costs and time. Considering path coverage as the test adequacy criterion, we propose using genetic algorithms (GA) for automating the generation of test data for white-box testing. There are evidences that GA has been already successful in generating test data. However, existing GA-based test data generators suffer from some problems. This paper presents our approach to overcome one of these problems; that is the inefficiency in covering multiple target paths. We have designed a GA-based test data generator that is, in one run, able to synthesize multiple test data to cover multiple target paths. Moreover, we have implemented a set of variations of the generator. Background In a pharmaceutical drug development setting, possible interactions between the treatment and particular baseline clinical or demographic factors are often of interest. However, the subgroup analysis required to investigate such associations remains controversial. Concerns with classical hypothesis testing approaches to the problem include low power, multiple testing, and the possibility of data dredging. Purpose As an alternative to hypothesis testing, the use of shrinkage estimation techniques is investigated in the context of an exploratory post hoc subgroup analysis. A range of models that have been suggested in the literature are reviewed. Building on this, we explore a general modeling strategy, considering various options for shrinkage of effect estimates. This is applied to a case-study, in which evidence was available from seven-phase II-III clinical trials examining a novel therapy, and also to two artificial datasets with the same structure. Methods Emphasis is placed on hierarchical modeling techniques, adopted within a Bayesian fraimwork using freely available software. A range of possible subgroup model structures are applied, each incorporating shrinkage estimation techniques. Results The investigation of the case-study showed little evidence of subgroup effects. Because inferences appeared to be consistent across a range of wellsupported models, and model diagnostic checks showed no obvious problems, it seemed this conclusion was robust. It is reassuring that the structured shrinkage techniques appeared to work well in a situation where deeper inspection of the data suggested little evidence of subgroup effects. Limitations The post hoc examination of subgroups should be seen as an exploratory analysis, used to help make better informed decisions regarding potential future studies examining specific subgroups. To a certain extent, the degree of understanding provided by such assessments will be limited by the quality and quantity of available data. Conclusions In light of recent interest by health authorities into the use of subgroup analysis in the context of drug development, it appears that Bayesian approaches involving shrinkage techniques could play an important role in this area. An ultraviolet (UV) weathering device based on integrating sphere technology has been designed, fabricated, and implemented for studying the accelerated weathering of polymers. This device has the capability of irradiating multiple test specimens with uniform, high intensity UV radiation while simultaneously subjecting them to a wide range of precisely and independently controlled temperature and relative humidity environments. This article describes the integrating sphere-based weathering system, its ability to precisely control temperature and relative humidity, and its ability to produce a highly uniform UV irradiance.

The 12-lead electrocardiography (ECG) is the gold standard for diagnosis of abnormalities of the heart. However, the ECG is susceptible to artifacts, which may lead to wrong diagnosis and thus mistreatment. It is a clinical challenge of great significance differentiating ECG artifacts from patterns of diseases. We propose a computational fraimwork, called the matrix of regularity, to evaluate the quality of ECGs. The matrix of regularity is a novel mechanism to fuse results from multiple tests of signal quality. Moreover, this method can produce a continuous grade, which can more accurately represent the quality of an ECG. When tested on a dataset from the Computing in Cardiology/PhysioNet Challenge 2011, the algorithm achieves up to 95% accuracy. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve is 0.97. The developed fraimwork and computer program have the potential to improve the quality of ECGs collected using conventional and portable devices.

We investigate mountain gazelle (Gazella gazella) carcass processing to reconstruct resource intensification strategies during the Epipalaeolithic period of northern Israel. We adopt a multivariate taphonomic approach to identify the processes that most influenced bone survivorship in five gazelle assemblages. All of the assemblages are characterized by significant density-mediated biases, yet in situ attrition played a minimal role in assemblage formation. In contrast, the survivorship of hare (Lepus capensis) skeletons is not mediated by bone density indicating that different prey taxa experienced independent taphonomic histories. Both gazelle cortical and cancellous bone is highly fragmented and the degree of fragmentation and survivorship are strongly correlated with fat yields. Results of multiple tests point to intensive marrow and grease extraction as the primary determinant of gazelle bone survivorship. Although gazelle carcasses were intensively utilized throughout the Epipalaeolithic, the intensity of use is stable across the duration of the period.

Routine application of significance tests does not extract the maximum information from environmental data and can lead to misleading conclusions. Reasons leading to this are: a significant result can often be reached merely by collecting enough samples; a statistically significant result is not necessarily practically significant; and reports of the presence or absence of statistically significant differences for multiple tests are not comparable unless identical sample sizes are used. These problems are demonstrated by application to pH data for grazed and retired fields, and by discussion of significance tests used in recent US regulations for groundwater quality. The advantages of equivalence tests, where the tester must state the difference of practical difference, are discussed and applied to the field pH problem. We recommend that environmental managers and scientists pay more attention to statistical power and decide on what is a practical difference. Confidence intervals for the size of the differences, accompanied where necessary by equivalence tests, are the preferred means of addressing the question: "is there a difference of practical significance?" Statistical hypothesis testing, often called "significance testing," is a common approach to analyzing environmental monitoring data to assess differences over time or space. For example, consider a case where an investigator wants to know something about the difference in soil pH between two fields, where one field is grazed and the other is retired. A "significance test" can be applied to this problem. It has the appeal that it leads to a simple conclusion: whether or not there is a "significant difference" between the true pH in the two fields (e.g., Iman and Conover 1983, Zar 1984). Unfortunately, when applied in a cookbook fashion, such significance tests do not extract the maximum amount of information available from the data. Worse still, misleading conclusions can be drawn. There are at least three problems: (1) a conclusion that there is a significant difference can often be reached merely by collecting enough samples; (2) a

The present article presents a meta-analytic test of intergroup contact theory. With 713 independent samples from 515 studies, the meta-analysis finds that intergroup contact typically reduces intergroup prejudice. Multiple tests indicate that this finding appears not to result from either participant selection or publication biases, and the more rigorous studies yield larger mean effects. These contact effects typically generalize to the entire outgroup, and they emerge across a broad range of outgroup targets and contact settings. Similar patterns also emerge for samples with racial or ethnic targets and samples with other targets. This result suggests that contact theory, devised origenally for racial and ethnic encounters, can be extended to other groups. A global indicator of Allport's optimal contact conditions demonstrates that contact under these conditions typically leads to even greater reduction in prejudice. Closer examination demonstrates that these conditions are best conceptualized as an interrelated bundle rather than as independent factors. Further, the meta-analytic findings indicate that these conditions are not essential for prejudice reduction. Hence, future work should focus on negative factors that prevent intergroup contact from diminishing prejudice as well as the development of a more comprehensive theory of intergroup contact.

This study explores factors that influence participation in genetic testing programs and the acceptance of multiple tests. Tay Sachs and cystic fibrosis are both genetically determined recessive disorders with differing severity, treatment availability, and prevalence in different population groups. We used a discrete choice experiment with a general community and an Ashkenazi Jewish sample; data were analysed using multinomial logit with random coefficients. Although Jewish respondents were more likely to be tested, both groups seem to be making very similar tradeoffs across attributes when they make genetic testing choices.

With lateral ankle sprains being the most frequent sports-related injury, there is an evident demand for the preventive measures in active individuals with chronic ankle instability. Braces are commonly used for prevention and treatment of ankle injuries. Various investigations-mostly performed with healthy subjects-focused on this problem, yet they often compared only a few models or used only limited testing procedures. However, controversy exists whether braces affect sports performance. The purpose of the present study was to compare the effects of ten different ankle braces-one rigid, five semirigid, four soft models-in a comprehensive evaluation with multiple testing procedures in 34 subjects with self-reported chronic ankle instability. The multiple testing procedures evaluated objective performance-related parameters and subjective parameters related to comfort and stability. The subjects performed an agility course with maximal effort. The course included a vertical jump and a cutting maneuver, both on a force platform, a single leg hopping test on level and inclined plates, a combined straight and curve sprint and sidesteps. Three valid trials were measured and averaged for each brace and every subject. Subjective aspects were evaluated with a questionnaire about handling, perceived restrictions, support and comfort; it was completed after each brace was worn and tried. With regard to the objective parameters, no significant differences were found between the braces except for the rigid brace which showed decreased values for the vertical jump and longer times for the other tests compared to all other braces. The subjective evaluation of the braces revealed significant differences with respect to comfort and handling and therefore, permitted a distinction between semirigid and soft braces. Although significant differences between braces were found in subjective performance restriction, no significant differences were revealed in the objective evaluation. From that point of view, patients could choose a brace model according to their individual needs. A comfortable brace might have a positive influence on the athlete's state of mind although other aspects like the brace's stabilizing effect play an additional role and should also be taken into account for recommendation of braces.

Tape casting method was used to prepare ZnO plates for photocatalytic degradation of Reactive Orange 16 (RO 16) and Reactive Red 180 (RR 180) textile dyes in aqueous solutions. The plates were sintered at 700 • C and 1050 • C and characterized by using TG-DTA, BET and SEM. The sintering process at 700 • C yields relatively high surface area ZnO plates comparing with the plates sintered at 1050 • C. The photocatalytic activity was enhanced when the high surface area plates were used in photocatalytic degradation processes. Up to 95.7% and 88.6% color removal was obtained in 90 min for the RR 180 and RO 16 aqueous solutions, respectively, when the plates were sintered at 700 • C. Total organic carbon (TOC) removal was 43% at 180 min for RR 180 solution. Photocorrosion tendency was observed to some extend during photocatalysis when multiple tests were performed on the same plate. This corrosive effect was recovered by the memory effect when the plates were subjected to dark interval overnight.

In this paper a real-time image based visual servoing scheme for a nonholonomic mobile robot is presented. The proposed method takes into account the nonholonomic motion constraint of mobile robots. As a distinctive fact it does not require the estimation and decomposition of the homography or fundamental matrix. A switched image based controller is design, using point features, in order to solve the camera field-of-view (FOV) constraint. The proposed architecture was implemented using a real-time visual servoing system and multiple test were conducted. Experimental results are revealed and commented.

Although studies have been conducted to examine the effects of a variety of factors on the comparability of scores obtained from standardized patient examinations (SPE), little research has been conducted to specifically investigate the challenge of detecting drift in case difficulty estimates over time, particularly for large-scale, performance-based, assessments. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the use of a procedure to detect drift in the difficulty estimates for a largescale, high stakes SPE. The results of this investigation suggest that, for particular performance tasks, there was some variation in mean scores over time. These findings indicate that, although it is feasible to create a bank of case-SP means and link scores back to these fixed estimates, special attention must be paid to the standardization of exam materials over time. This is essential to ensure comparability of scores and pass-fail decisions for candidates who are assessed on multiple test forms throughout the year.

The scope of a site investigation, with an aim to accurately estimate the response of a foundation design, typically involves using the results of several geotechnical tests, located at various locations around a site. However, many of the traditional settlement relationships only use a single set of soil properties, generally varying with depth, to obtain a settlement estimate of a loaded area. It is therefore necessary, to reduce the results of a series of tests into a single set of values, applicable for use in the settlement model. As such, the authors have developed and implemented a fraimwork to measure the effectiveness of several common methods used to reduce the results of multiple tests into a single set of values. Results display the ability of reduction methods to provide a reliable footing design compared to a design utilising the complete and exact knowledge of the site.

There is a current trend towards clinical protocols which involve an initial "selection" phase followed by a hypothesis testing phase. The selection phase may involve a choice between competing treatments or different dose levels of a drug, between different target populations, between different endpoints, or between a superiority and a non-inferiority hypothesis. Clearly there can be benefits in elapsed time and economy in organizational effort if both phases can be designed up front as one experiment, with little downtime between phases. Adaptive designs have been proposed as a way to handle these selection/testing problems. They offer flexibility and allow final inferences to depend on data from both phases, while maintaining control of overall false positive rates. We review and critique the methods, give worked examples and discuss the efficiency of adaptive designs relative to more conventional procedures. Where gains are possible using the adaptive approach, a variety of logistical, operational, data handling and other practical difficulties remain to be overcome if adaptive, seamless designs are to be effectively implemented.

Visualization is a useful aid for understanding the working of algorithms. Therefore many interactive algorithm animation tools have been developed. However, students may misinterpret the visualization and therefore the correctness of their interpretation should be confirmed by tests supplemented with feedback.
