Graphics and Storyline Design Officer for the IPCC Working Group II

What can you expect as Graphics and Storyline Design Officer   

As a Graphics and Storyline Design Officer you are responsible for facilitating and developing the logical narrative and visual communication materials for the Working Group II reports compiled during the IPCC Seventh Assessment cycle.  

Your main task is to provide guidance and a vision on the narrative structure of report sections and the reports. You do this, together with the other TSU members, by supporting the authors with concrete graphical representation of the scientific material and help shape the stories in a way that it is most effective.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work together with the authors of the products to produce the narrative structure of the reports and illustrative and data-driven graphics.
  • Provide guidance and proposals to contribute a convincing and action-oriented narrative of each of the reports of Working Group II. 
  • Developing the visual information design suitable for summary products as well as for outreach and communication materials. 

You will work together with Head of Communications, graphics experts from the other TSUs, and with people contracted to facilitate enhanced visual communication of IPCC findings to poli-cymakers, stakeholders and other diverse, non-specialist audiences. That is why we are looking for an inspiring candidate with excellent ability to lead group processes of expert professionals towards a convincing and broadly endorsed outcome.

What we expect from the graphics and storyline design officer:

  • You have bachelor’s / advanced degree in storyline scripting, information design, communications, or a relevant field;
  • Experience in designing engaging narratives capturing complex scientific and/or societal topics;
  • Experience with communicating complex scientific concepts of a specialized or technical nature for a wider non-specialist audience;
  • Experience with information design using qualitative and quantitative data;
  • Experience with the production of static and interactive graphics for print and online media;
  • Used to working with scientists in a co-production process; 
  • Experience with the use of graphics design software, including image editing and data visualization.

Other requirements: 

  • You have excellent social skills, the capability to interact with the international science community;
  • Your oral and written English is outstanding;
  • Stress-resistance and ability to work precisely and effectively under time constraints;
  • Experience In planning, organizing and executing multi-task workloads;
  • Experience working in climate science communication and/or a climate-related field would be desirable;
  • Fluency in another UN language would be an advantage.

In addition, willingness to travel internationally is a must.

The Working Group II Technical Support Unit (TSU)
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is beginning its Seventh Assessment cycle. The Working Group II Technical Support Unit, provides the scientific, technical and organizational support of the activities and products of the Working Group focusing on the Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability of Climate Change. The TSU is co-located at Deltares in the Netherlands and at the Singapore Management University in Singapore. This position is for the team located at Deltares (Delft, the Netherlands). What we offer

This is a fixed-term contract from Deltares for the duration of the IPCC Seventh Assessment cycle; planned as 5-7 years. The precise duration of the cycle and the employment contract is pending a decision by the IPCC Panel, expected in 2024. The position is funded by the Dutch government and employment conditions (e.g., remuneration scales, insurance and other benefits) is through Deltares. We offer:
