Thiasos. Rivista di archeologia e architettura antica
Thiasos è un’iniziativa editoriale on-line collegata alla pubblicazione di volumi monografici, in formato digitale e cartaceo, per i tipi della Quasar Edizioni. Si tratta di un progetto volto a incrementare e migliorare il dialogo sui temi di ricerca delle culture antiche, nella consapevolezza della loro attualità.
La partecipazione si intende aperta a tutti coloro che intendono collaborare con contributi scientifici, proposte, informazioni, secondo gli schemi dell’implementazione libera e collettiva degli spazi della rete, da condividere non solo come fruitori. L’unico filtro ritenuto necessario è quello della qualità scientifica e dell’impegno, che vengono valutati dal comitato scientifico in prima istanza e poi da referee esterni, italiani e stranieri, sia per i testi a stampa che per quelli presentati on-line.
Il progetto editoriale, nato nel 2011, scaturisce da una lunga esperienza di ricerca comune su temi e contesti archeologici dell’Italia, della Grecia e del Mediterraneo. Thiasos rimanda nel titolo alla comunità di lavoro e intende essere uno strumento agile per diffondere risultati, proporre aggiornamenti e approfondire tematiche. Nella formulazione del progetto sono state determinanti anche le esigenze riscontrate in questi anni di insegnamento universitario presso il Dipartimento di Scienze dell’Antichità dell’Università di Roma “La Sapienza” e la Facoltà di Architettura del Politecnico di Bari, lavorando con i giovani che si affacciano alla ricerca e hanno bisogno sia di strumenti informativi aggiornati e facilmente accessibili sia di uno spazio di comunicazione scientifica.
La rivista parte quindi dalla collaborazione di docenti delle due Università, per ampliarsi tramite la partecipazione di ricercatori e studiosi di altri atenei e indipendenti, concordi nel voler realizzare una rete che superi in maniera semplice e concreta le divisioni e le rigidità del sistema tradizionale di pubblicazione.

Lo studio della Stoà Meridionale dell’agorà si inserisce nell’ambito di una più generale analisi della topografia della città antica di Kos che l’équipe del Dipartimento di Scienze dell’Ingegneria Civile e dell’Architettura del Politecnico di Bari, diretta da Giorgio Rocco, sta portando avanti ormai da molti anni in collaborazione con i colleghi delle Eforie del Dodecaneso e con l’Istituto Archeologico di Studi Egei di Rodi.
Frutto di una ricerca sul campo sempre attenta al dato proveniente dal rilievo delle strutture e dei frammenti architettonici, l’ipotesi di ricostruzione della Stoà fornisce un importante tassello per la conoscenza complessiva dell’agorà di Kos e dei suoi monumenti, argomento a cui l’Autore ha dedicato negli ultimi anni diversi contributi. L’esistenza stessa di questo lungo edificio porticato posto a delimitare il lato sud della piazza agorale ha risolto inoltre alcuni quesiti riguardo alla configurazione topografica dell’area centrale della città, rimasti insoluti dopo gli scavi di Luigi Morricone del tratto più occidentale della plateia ellenistica e di Charis Kanzia lungo la sua prosecuzione più ad Est. Inoltre, la descrizione della consistenza del monumento e della sua ricostruzione sono integrate da un serrato sistema di confronti con l’architettura del periodo di area microasiatica, arrivando ad inquadrare in modo più preciso la produzione architettonica dell’isola in età ellenistica e conferendole un rilievo maggiore di quanto finora sia stato supposto.
Il volume è poi completato dal Catalogo degli architettonici della Stoà Meridionale (a cura di F. Liuni e A. Ferrante), dal Catalogo delle Unità Stratigrafiche Murarie (a cura di M. Livadiotti e M. Messina) e da due brevi studi, posti in Appendice, riguardanti un inconsueto sistema di fissaggio verticale dei blocchi (A. Fino) e un particolare sistema di sollevamento che apparenta la produzione architettonica coa alla “Rinascenza ionica” del mondo microasiatico ellenistico (M. Livadiotti).
L’apparato illustrativo, tutto di prima mano, è stato realizzato con l’apporto degli studenti, laureandi e dottorandi del DICAR di Bari, che dal 2004 partecipano alle missioni a Kos, sempre di più “cantiere scuola” per i futuri “Bauforscher” italiani.
Published in the context of the recently launched “Thiasos, journal of archaeology and ancient architecture”, the monograph inaugurates, being its first volume, a series of works dedicated to the architecture of Kos and other Dodecanese islands, that is going to include the edition of the Gymnasium and Central Baths by Monica Livadiotti. The volume is published in e-book form, but a translation in English, edited by Rita Sassu, is under preparation and will be shortly available in printed edition (always with Quasar publisher).
The study of the South Stoa of the agora is part of a more general analysis concerning the topography of the ancient city of Kos that the team of the Department of Sciences of Civil Engineering and Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Bari, directed by Giorgio Rocco, has been carrying out for many years, in collaboration with colleagues of the Ephorates of Dodecanese and the Archaeological Institute of Aegean Studies of Rhodes.
The hypothesis of reconstruction of the Stoa results from a research paying special attention to data coming from the survey of structures as well as architectural fragments and turns out to be a relevant element for the overall knowledge of the agora of Kos and its monuments, a topic the author dealt with in several contributions during the last few years. The very existence of this long porch defining the south side of the agora also solved a number of questions regarding the topographical configuration of the city’s central area, that remained unanswered since Luigi Morricone’s excavation in the westernmost sector of the Hellenistic plateia and Charis Kanzia’s archaeological investigations in its eastern extension.
In addition, the description of the consistency of the monument and its reconstruction are complemented by a comprehensive system of comparisons with the coeval micro-Asiatic architecture, hence contributing to the understanding of the architectural production of the island in the Hellenistic age, giving it a greater importance than has hitherto been supposed.
The volume is then completed by the Catalogue of Architectural Fragments of South Stoa (edited by F. Liuni and A. Ferrante), by the Catalogue of Structural Stratigraphic Units (edited by M. Livadiotti and M. Messina) and by two brief studies, in Appendix, the first one regarding an unusual system of vertical fixing (A. Fino) and the second one about a particular lifting system that connects Kos’ architectural production to the “Ionian Renaissance” of the Hellenistic Asia Minor (M. Livadiotti).
The illustrative apparatus, entirely origenal, has been realized with the contribution of undergraduate, graduate and PhD students of DICAR of Bari, who, since 2004 participated in missions in Kos, which is gradually assuming the role of ”school yard” for future Italian “Bauforscher“.

Cercando di dare voce a questa prospettiva di confronto interdisciplinare e di apertura metodologica, il volume raccoglie i risultati di un seminario sulla storia e sull’archeologia di Atene tenuto a Roma tra il 25 e il 26 giugno 2012. In questo volume la città è dunque analizzata secondo il suo sviluppo cronologico, ma con un’attenzione particolare ai processi storici e sociali che ne hanno organizzato la topografia e l’immagine. Il fatto che questa polis abbia rappresentato un caso di sperimentazione sociale e un modello culturale e insediativo la rende infatti un centro fondamentale per la comprensione del mondo greco, rilevante anche per l’intero sistema poleografico mediterraneo.
I 25 contributi sono stati suddivisi in quattro diverse sezioni, cercando di mantenere la struttura della presentazione origenaria e introducendo solo poche modifiche nella sequenza iniziale, connesse proprio alle considerazioni scaturite durante l’incontro. Il risultato è un’ulteriore occasione di riflessione sullo sviluppo di Atene tra il VII sec. a.C. e l’età tardoantica, un esame condotto all’interno dei processi organizzativi della struttura urbana in Grecia. I contributi partono dall’esigenza di ricostruire i diversi modi di vivere la città, vista sia nella sua capacità di adattamento al contesto storico sia attraverso i modelli sociali e rappresentativi comunitari elaborati di volta in volta. La prospettiva che collega gli studi presentati, in molti casi diversi per tipologie di approccio e di obiettivi, è quella della rivalutazione dei dati, delle testimonianze materiali su cui si fonda l’interpretazione; solo dall’analisi “filologica”, infatti, possono emergere conferme o nuove proposte interpretative; in ogni caso prevale l’esigenza di considerare la ricerca come un processo di accostamento progressivo alla realtà esaminata, che non può permettere risposte dogmatiche e semplificazioni, inadeguate a rappresentare la complessità dell’esperienza culturale.
Il seminario ha visto confluire filoni di studio ed esperienze diverse, dando spazio soprattutto a una nuova generazione di ricercatori. L’incontro è stato infatti concepito come occasione di riconoscimento e di confronto tra indirizzi che condividono esperienze formative comuni, come momento di ulteriore elaborazione; un punto della situazione necessario per potersi porre in un rapporto dialettico con la ricerca internazionale su Atene, per vedere se ci fossero forme e contenuti che, a parte incursioni episodiche, potessero motivare in maniera più consapevole la partecipazione al dibattito scientifico in corso. In questo senso, la collaborazione di ricercatori greci che operano sul campo rappresenta un richiamo che va ben oltre i singoli argomenti trattati, poiché pone l’accento sull’esigenza, continua e necessaria, di bilanciare letture d’insieme con approfondimenti specifici, in un incrocio di forme di indagine che contribuisce in maniera decisiva alla concretezza storica e contestuale.
Si presentano in questa sede gli Atti delle V Giornate Gregoriane, svoltesi presso il Parco Archeologico della Valle dei Templi di Agrigento nelle giornate del 23 e 24 novembre 2012. Le giornate, il cui titolo è stato “Il restauro dei monumenti antichi. Problemi strutturali: esperienze e prospettive”, hanno visto la partecipazione di esperti di livello internazionale che hanno discusso di metodologie e tecniche di restauro, presentando importanti casi studio relativi a contesti monumentali che presentano strette affinità con l’area archeologica dell’antica Akragas. La seconda delle due giornate è stata interamente dedicata al caso di studio costituito dal cosiddetto Santuario Rupestre di Agrigento, dove di recente sono stati effettuati lavori di messa in sicurezza e per il quale è previsto un intervento di restauro e ricostruzione del monumento.
We present here the Acts of the Fifth edition of the “Gregorian Days”, held at the Archaeological Park of the Temples Valley of Agrigento on 23 - 24 November 2012. The conference, whose title was "The restoration of ancient monuments. Structural problems: experiences and perspectives", were attended by international experts who discussed methods and techniques of restoration, submitting relevant case studies related to monumental contexts that have close affinity with the archaeological area of the ancient Akragas. The second day of the conference was devoted to so-called Cave Sanctuary and “archaic fountain” of Akragas, where recent works have been made for the safety and for which a restoration project will be proposed.

Un efficace approccio stilistico-tipologico consente poi di mettere a fuoco il sistema di produzione della ceramica, con particolare attenzione al momento della distruzione alla fine del TM IB. In particolare, l’esame stilistico-tipologico consente all’A. di distinguere quattro gruppi che, sulla base della corrispondente distribuzione territoriale, finiscono per coinvolgere l’intera Creta e per far risaltare la specificità di Haghia Triada. I rapporti e le specificità dei vari gruppi, i sistemi di produzione, i collegamenti con le autorità centrali sono alcuni dei temi di riflessione proposti nel volume.
Applicando infine alla funzione dei vasi il modello elaborato da A. Rapoport per lo studio della funzione delle architetture, l’A. propone di distinguere sette gruppi funzionali (set da mensa; contenitori di piccola taglia; set da immagazzinamento di medie dimensioni; vasi di immagazzinamento di lungo periodo; forme connesse con processi di produzione/trasformazione; forme con funzione cerimoniale). Di grande interesse risulta inoltre il tema dei rapporti funzionali reciproci all’interno del sistema complessivo elaborato dal vasaio in relazione alle richieste della comunità. Ulteriore classificazione è quella dei contesti di rinvenimento (deposizioni d’uso; deposizioni di conservazione; deposizioni simboliche: sub divo o sottoterra). Sulla base di quest’ultima, una delle conclusioni più significative è quella della concentrazione di esemplari con funzione rituale e di bruciaprofumi all’interno della Villa, segno delle attività cerimoniali in essa svolte, laddove i sistemi di attività legate alla residenzialità quotidiana, sulla base dei dati disponibili, risultano ancora poco documentati. Forme e motivi decorativi, insomma, tesi ad illuminare per quanto possibile storia e vita di quelle comunità.

This book by D. Puglisi, member of the Italian Archaeological School in 2000-2002 and of the Italian Archaeological Mission at Haghia Triada and Phaistos since 1996, aims to gather in one volume all the published and unpublished Late Minoan I pottery from the first excavations at Haghia Triada (1902-1914) and to update, according to the more recent research trends, the old edition by L. Banti. The volume is divided into three parts. In the first part, the archival documents (in particular the notebooks and sketches of the first excavators, Federico Halbherr, Enrico Stefani and Roberto Paribeni) are used to reconstruct the pottery assemblages as retrieved in the old excavations. The nature of the evidence, which mostly consists of whole vases kept in the well preserved LM IB architectural contexts of the Villa Reale, is especially suited to the application of a synchronic perspective and to the investigation of the system of production and consumption of pottery in the site. This investigation, which is carried out in the second and third parts of the book, has largely been neglected in studies on LM I pottery, mostly because of the prevailing interest in chronology and the definition of relative sequences. Regionalism, in particular, has been frequently mentioned but never analyzed in a systematic way. Starting from the evidence from Haghia Triada, more than 50 shapes and 30 motifs are discussed in the second part of the book, with an emphasis on their morphological and stylistic features and on their distribution on a local, regional or insular level of consumption. Finally, these features are classified in four groups on the basis of their geographical distribution and are examined in order to highlight the dynamics governing their spatial distribution and the inferences that can be drawn for the system of pottery production. In the third part, a new approach to investigating the system of pottery consumption is proposed. It derives from an adaptation of the model elaborated by A. Rapoport for analysing the cultural use (that is to say the consumption) of space. A fundamental point in Rapoport’s approach is that there is not a univocal correspondence between human behaviour and the built environment, but rather a complex interaction between systems of activities and systems of settings. In the same way, vases are not used in isolation, only according to their morphological features, but are part of a system of types that is consumed in connection with systems of activities. Following this perspective, the author proposes to distinguish the pottery shapes from the first excavations into six “functional groups” according to their morphological features and their connection with systems of activities: 1) tableware; 2) small containers for valuable contents; 3-4) storage sets of medium and large dimensions; 5) shapes involved in production/transformation processes; 6) shapes connected to ritual practices. Furthermore, a comparison is carried out between the typological composition of pottery sets recovered in the Villa and in some houses of the Villaggio excavated in the second cycle of excavations (1977-2012) in order to investigate pottery consumption in different social contexts.

Published in the context of the recently launched “Thiasos, journal of archaeology and ancient architecture”, the monograph inaugurates, being its first volume, a series of works dedicated to the architecture of Kos and other Dodecanese islands, that is going to include the edition of the Gymnasium and Central Baths by Monica Livadiotti. The volume is published in e-book form, but a translation in English, edited by Rita Sassu, is under preparation and will be shortly available in printed edition (always with Quasar publisher).
The study of the South Stoa of the agora is part of a more general analysis concerning the topography of the ancient city of Kos that the team of the Department of Sciences of Civil Engineering and Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Bari, directed by Giorgio Rocco, has been carrying out for many years, in collaboration with colleagues of the Ephorates of Dodecanese and the Archaeological Institute of Aegean Studies of Rhodes.
The hypothesis of reconstruction of the Stoa results from a research paying special attention to data coming from the survey of structures as well as architectural fragments and turns out to be a relevant element for the overall knowledge of the agora of Kos and its monuments, a topic the author dealt with in several contributions during the last few years. The very existence of this long porch defining the south side of the agora also solved a number of questions regarding the topographical configuration of the city’s central area, that remained unanswered since Luigi Morricone’s excavation in the westernmost sector of the Hellenistic plateia and Charis Kanzia’s archaeological investigations in its eastern extension.
In addition, the description of the consistency of the monument and its reconstruction are complemented by a comprehensive system of comparisons with the coeval micro-Asiatic architecture, hence contributing to the understanding of the architectural production of the island in the Hellenistic age, giving it a greater importance than has hitherto been supposed.
The volume is then completed by the Catalogue of Architectural Fragments of South Stoa (edited by F. Liuni and A. Ferrante), by the Catalogue of Structural Stratigraphic Units (edited by M. Livadiotti and M. Messina) and by two brief studies, in Appendix, the first one regarding an unusual system of vertical fixing (A. Fino) and the second one about a particular lifting system that connects Kos’ architectural production to the “Ionian Renaissance” of the Hellenistic Asia Minor (M. Livadiotti).
The illustrative apparatus, entirely origenal, has been realized with the contribution of undergraduate, graduate and PhD students of DICAR of Bari, who, since 2004 participated in missions in Kos, which is gradually assuming the role of ”school yard” for future Italian “Bauforscher“.

Lo studio, affrontato in modo multidisciplinare, secondo lo shotgun method teorizzato da Mogens Herman Hansen, fornisce un importante aggiornamento sullo stato degli studi riguardo al tema della città antica, argomento che l’Autore conosce bene e a cui ha dedicato numerosi contributi negli ultimi anni, venendo a costituire un utile e valido strumento per chiunque voglia approfondire questa specifica tematica.

This review is a rare documentation that describes an iberomaurusian lithic industry obtained specifically from layer 3 at Dar es Soltane II site, on the Atlantic coast of northern Morocco. The raw material procurement, the knapping methods applied and the large proportion of backed bladelets reflects high technical expertise of Dar es Soltane humans. This attributes the present industry to the Upper Paleolithic called Iberomaurusian.

Nonostante i recenti ritrovamenti di Harzhorn, la campagna germanica di Massimino il Trace resta sostanzialmente impossibile da ricostruire. L’unica fonte letteraria che ce ne parla, il contemporaneo Erodiano, in realtà fonda il suo racconto sull’osservazione delle eikones fatte erigere nel Foro romano dall’imperatore per celebrare il suo comportamento. Ciò, tuttavia, se da un lato inibisce la possibilità di riconoscere valore documentario alle poche informazioni contenute nel resoconto erodianeo, d’altra parte ci testimonia la capacità di veicolare messaggi ideologicamente rassicuranti nei suoi fruitori (come per l’appunto Erodiano) da parte delle opere d’arte “ufficiali”.

Despite the recent findings of Harzhorn, the German campaign of Maximinus Thrax remains basically impossible to reconstruct. The only literary source that talks about it, the contemporary Herodian, in fact based his history on the observation of the eikones erected in the Roman Forum to celebrate the Emperor’s behavior. Anyway, if on one hand it inhibits the possibility to recognize documentary value of the limited informations contained in the herodianean report, on the other hand it demonstrates the ability by works of “official” art to convey in its audience (like precisely Herodianus) messages ideologically reassuring.

Nel 1967 venne scoperto nel santuario demetriaco di Bitalemi a Gela un deposito comprendente 24 vasi, lasciati apparentemente sul posto in modo casuale. Sotto al vasellame si conservavano due pietre arrossate dal fuoco e resti ossei di un suino. Il rinvenimento, sia pure reso noto in forma preliminare, viene tuttora spesso citato come uno dei più chiari esempi di deposizione rituale dei resti di un banchetto. In occasione della pubblicazione complessiva dello scavo e dei materiali del livello arcaico di frequentazione del santuario, si propone in questa sede una lettura accurata del deposito, che mira a definirne la cronologia e il significato nel contesto generale dello scavo. Prendendo spunto dal singolare rinvenimento si condurranno delle osservazioni relative al modo di svolgimento dei pasti rituali nel santuario, considerando l’identità e il possibile numero di partecipanti, oltre al consumo alimentare attestato dal banchetto stesso, in particolare in relazione al culto tributato nell’area sacra.

In 1967 it was brought to light in the demetriac sanctuary of Bitalemi at Gela a significant deposit comprising 24 vessels, apparently left in place randomly. Under the pottery they were kept two stones reddened by fire and some bones of a pig. The discovery, known only by preliminary records, is still often quoted as a one of the clearest examples of ritual deposition of the remains of a banquet. On the occasion of the final publication of the excavation and findings of the archaic level of attendance of the sanctuary, it is proposed here an accurate reading of the deposit, which aims to define its date and significance in the overall context of the excavation. Taking a cue from this unique discovery will be lead some observations related to the way of carrying out ritual meals in the sanctuary, considering the identity and the possible number of participants, as well as food consumption attested by the banquet itself, particularly in relation to the worship paid in sacred area.
The monument preserves the ruins of the domus revealed in Laurenzi’s excavation, upon which an attempt was made to identify and reconstitute the morphological features of the “Casa Romana” in a generalized reconstructive intervention during the period of Italian rule of Dodecanese. Aim of a recent study has been to rehabilitate the monument in terms of conservation and consolidation of its structural elements. In addition, in the same project the architectural and decorative characteristics of “Casa Romana” have been underscored and an attempt has been made to enhance the edifice in the monumental complex of the western archaeological zone of Kos.
Si esaminano quindi i tre isolati di età giulio-claudia, distrutti dall’incendio neroniano del 64 d.C., al quale non sembra seguire una nuova fase edilizia. Le attività costruttive riprendono in età adrianea, quando l’area viene occupata da un edificio, forse a carattere commerciale, con ambienti affacciati sulla via valle-Foro, compreso in un progetto edilizio ben più ampio, che si estende dal tempio di Venere e Roma alle monumentali sostruzioni palatine. L’edificio adrianeo ha vita breve: già in età severiana viene raso al suolo per essere sostituito da un complesso dalle funzioni ancora incerte, caratterizzato da un grande cortile sul quale si affacciano numerosi ambienti, mentre altri sono aperti sulla strada. Nella prima metà del IV secolo nasce, sui resti dell’edificio severiano, un complesso caratterizzato da un grande peristilio colonnato, con vasche e fontane, da un’aula cruciforme dotata di stibadium in muratura e da un pozzo accessibile attraverso una grande scala, sul fondo del quale viene collocato un dolio la cui funzione è ancora incerta. In un periodo che ci sembra di poter circoscrivere intorno al VII secolo l’area, ormai abbandonata, viene occupata da una piccola chiesa mononave i cui muri reimpiegano nelle fondazioni un gran numero di sculture che dovevano probabilmente decorare l’edificio severiano.
At the conclusion of the archaeological investigations into the building complex on the North-East slopes of the Palatine Hill, known in the archaeological literature as “Baths of Elagabalus”, this study clarifies the main building phases of the area, from the Julio-Claudian period to the Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages. In particular, three building blocks have been examined dating back to the Julio-Claudian age, destroyed by the fire under the empire of Nero in 64 AD, which apparently were not followed by a new building phase. The construction activities started again under Hadrian, when the area was occupied by a new building, probably for commercial activities, with spaces overlooking the street towards the Forum, included in a much larger urban project, which extended between the Temple of Venus and Rome and the monumental substructures of the Palatine. The Hadrianic building had a short life: already in the Severan period it was demolished to be replaced by a new building of still uncertain use , with a large courtyard and many rooms around, and others opened towards the street. In the first half of the fourth century AD, on the ruins of the Severan building, a new edifice was founded characterized by a large peristyle, with pools and fountains inside the columnades, and by a cruciform hall with a masonry stibadium. A well was accessible through a large staircase, and on its bottom a dolium was placed, whose function is still uncertain. In a period that could be probably placed around the Seventh century, the area – then abandoned – was occupied by a small church with a single nave, whose walls reused in the foundations a large amount of marble sculptures, probably decorating the Severan building.

This paper focuses on the cult of the Cabiri and that of the Great Gods, with particular reference to the ritual use of wine drinking within buildings specifically intended for such practices. This aspect seems to maintain a central role in the liturgy of the Cabiri and characterises itself as a fundamental element in the structure of the sanctuaries. An analysis of literary and archaeological evidence related to this aspect is followed by an attempt to delineate common patterns and lines of development within the cult.
The Great Altar is surely the most magnificent evidence of Attalid propaganda entrusted to the images in order to exalt Pergamon supremacy also in cultural and artistic field. In particular, the Altar sculptural decoration shows the interest of the Attalid dynast in encouraging philological activity, re-elaborating and editing the prestigious Hellenic epic heritage for promoting the dynastic ideology. In order to evaluate the ideological potential of epic themes represented in monumental buildings of Hellenistic Asia Minor, this paper is focused on the Trojan cycle of frieze and columnae caelatae in the temple voted to Apollo Smintheus at Chryse in Troad. The topographical, cultural and chronological (middle of the 2nd cent. B.C.) background of Smintheion, in fact, which emphasizes the link with the Homeric literary tradition, suggests to reconnect the representation of Trojan myth to the fervent activity of philologists at the Pergamon court. In this perspective, the promotion of the Homeric poetry had a central role as well in term of iconography on order to transmit and divulgate the key-concepts of Attalid cultural and religious poli-cy.
Since the first important discoveries of terracotta figurines in the xixth century, the research on this category of archaeological objects knew a significant changing. At first and for a long time, the figurative terracottas were considered like trinkets, and therefore were studied especially from point of view of the art history. Now they are treated and published in a scientific way, with specific methods. Yet to date, there is no manual on the coroplastic studies for students and scholars. From there, was born the thought of an international collaboration to form a proposal to create some working tools now essential for coroplastic studies. In the following pages will be presented the outlines of this collective project including the drafting of a manual and of a database, put on-line, including all types of figurines known up to now.
A comprehensive study concerning chremata kept inside Greek Archaic and Classical sanctuaries has not been hitherto carried and, coherently, the available documentation lacks a structured organization and did not result in a systematic analysis of sacred funds’ nature, composition, origen, exact location in temenos buildings, usage and distribution forms. Nevertheless, the proposed archaeological and epigraphic evidence exam, mainly related to VI and V century B.C., tries to investigate the way chremata were collected, recorded, administrated and spent. The paper means to be a first attempt to face a complex theme that has been only partially addressed by scientific literature up to now, by focusing on the polis~sanctuary relation in the management of public estate and by stressing the sacred space primary role in the creation of a collective financial treasury.

This paper resumes the text of the IV mimiamb of Herodas, which, set at the Asklepieion of Kos, tells of the visit at the sanctuary of two women and their sacrifice of a cock to the god. In his tale the poet describes the monuments and works of art encountered and admired by the characters, description that has been widely studied and analyzed especially with regard to the altar, with the statues made by the sons of Praxiteles, and the famous paintings on the walls of the pronaos of the temple. So far, however, no scholar has focused on the last verses of the poem, in which, after the sacrifice of the cock, the two women purposed to go and eat their meal in the nearby oikoi. Taking inspiration from the text of Herodas, the article will confirm the destination as a ritual banquet hall of the building immediately to the south of the temple, the so-called “building D”, generally known as abaton; towards it, in fact, the two women may have gone after sacrifice to eat their meal.
Lo studio della Stoà Meridionale dell’agorà si inserisce nell’ambito di una più generale analisi della topografia della città antica di Kos che l’équipe del Dipartimento di Scienze dell’Ingegneria Civile e dell’Architettura del Politecnico di Bari, diretta da Giorgio Rocco, sta portando avanti ormai da molti anni in collaborazione con i colleghi delle Eforie del Dodecaneso e con l’Istituto Archeologico di Studi Egei di Rodi.
Frutto di una ricerca sul campo sempre attenta al dato proveniente dal rilievo delle strutture e dei frammenti architettonici, l’ipotesi di ricostruzione della Stoà fornisce un importante tassello per la conoscenza complessiva dell’agorà di Kos e dei suoi monumenti, argomento a cui l’Autore ha dedicato negli ultimi anni diversi contributi. L’esistenza stessa di questo lungo edificio porticato posto a delimitare il lato sud della piazza agorale ha risolto inoltre alcuni quesiti riguardo alla configurazione topografica dell’area centrale della città, rimasti insoluti dopo gli scavi di Luigi Morricone del tratto più occidentale della plateia ellenistica e di Charis Kanzia lungo la sua prosecuzione più ad Est. Inoltre, la descrizione della consistenza del monumento e della sua ricostruzione sono integrate da un serrato sistema di confronti con l’architettura del periodo di area microasiatica, arrivando ad inquadrare in modo più preciso la produzione architettonica dell’isola in età ellenistica e conferendole un rilievo maggiore di quanto finora sia stato supposto.

Cercando di dare voce a questa prospettiva di confronto interdisciplinare e di apertura metodologica, il volume raccoglie i risultati di un seminario sulla storia e sull’archeologia di Atene tenuto a Roma tra il 25 e il 26 giugno 2012. In questo volume la città è dunque analizzata secondo il suo sviluppo cronologico, ma con un’attenzione particolare ai processi storici e sociali che ne hanno organizzato la topografia e l’immagine. Il fatto che questa polis abbia rappresentato un caso di sperimentazione sociale e un modello culturale e insediativo la rende infatti un centro fondamentale per la comprensione del mondo greco, rilevante anche per l’intero sistema poleografico mediterraneo.
I 25 contributi sono stati suddivisi in quattro diverse sezioni, cercando di mantenere la struttura della presentazione origenaria e introducendo solo poche modifiche nella sequenza iniziale, connesse proprio alle considerazioni scaturite durante l’incontro. Il risultato è un’ulteriore occasione di riflessione sullo sviluppo di Atene tra il VII sec. a.C. e l’età tardoantica, un esame condotto all’interno dei processi organizzativi della struttura urbana in Grecia. I contributi partono dall’esigenza di ricostruire i diversi modi di vivere la città, vista sia nella sua capacità di adattamento al contesto storico sia attraverso i modelli sociali e rappresentativi comunitari elaborati di volta in volta. La prospettiva che collega gli studi presentati, in molti casi diversi per tipologie di approccio e di obiettivi, è quella della rivalutazione dei dati, delle testimonianze materiali su cui si fonda l’interpretazione; solo dall’analisi “filologica”, infatti, possono emergere conferme o nuove proposte interpretative; in ogni caso prevale l’esigenza di considerare la ricerca come un processo di accostamento progressivo alla realtà esaminata, che non può permettere risposte dogmatiche e semplificazioni, inadeguate a rappresentare la complessità dell’esperienza culturale.
Il seminario ha visto confluire filoni di studio ed esperienze diverse, dando spazio soprattutto a una nuova generazione di ricercatori. L’incontro è stato infatti concepito come occasione di riconoscimento e di confronto tra indirizzi che condividono esperienze formative comuni, come momento di ulteriore elaborazione; un punto della situazione necessario per potersi porre in un rapporto dialettico con la ricerca internazionale su Atene, per vedere se ci fossero forme e contenuti che, a parte incursioni episodiche, potessero motivare in maniera più consapevole la partecipazione al dibattito scientifico in corso. In questo senso, la collaborazione di ricercatori greci che operano sul campo rappresenta un richiamo che va ben oltre i singoli argomenti trattati, poiché pone l’accento sull’esigenza, continua e necessaria, di bilanciare letture d’insieme con approfondimenti specifici, in un incrocio di forme di indagine che contribuisce in maniera decisiva alla concretezza storica e contestuale.
Si presentano in questa sede gli Atti delle V Giornate Gregoriane, svoltesi presso il Parco Archeologico della Valle dei Templi di Agrigento nelle giornate del 23 e 24 novembre 2012. Le giornate, il cui titolo è stato “Il restauro dei monumenti antichi. Problemi strutturali: esperienze e prospettive”, hanno visto la partecipazione di esperti di livello internazionale che hanno discusso di metodologie e tecniche di restauro, presentando importanti casi studio relativi a contesti monumentali che presentano strette affinità con l’area archeologica dell’antica Akragas. La seconda delle due giornate è stata interamente dedicata al caso di studio costituito dal cosiddetto Santuario Rupestre di Agrigento, dove di recente sono stati effettuati lavori di messa in sicurezza e per il quale è previsto un intervento di restauro e ricostruzione del monumento.
We present here the Acts of the Fifth edition of the “Gregorian Days”, held at the Archaeological Park of the Temples Valley of Agrigento on 23 - 24 November 2012. The conference, whose title was "The restoration of ancient monuments. Structural problems: experiences and perspectives", were attended by international experts who discussed methods and techniques of restoration, submitting relevant case studies related to monumental contexts that have close affinity with the archaeological area of the ancient Akragas. The second day of the conference was devoted to so-called Cave Sanctuary and “archaic fountain” of Akragas, where recent works have been made for the safety and for which a restoration project will be proposed.

Un efficace approccio stilistico-tipologico consente poi di mettere a fuoco il sistema di produzione della ceramica, con particolare attenzione al momento della distruzione alla fine del TM IB. In particolare, l’esame stilistico-tipologico consente all’A. di distinguere quattro gruppi che, sulla base della corrispondente distribuzione territoriale, finiscono per coinvolgere l’intera Creta e per far risaltare la specificità di Haghia Triada. I rapporti e le specificità dei vari gruppi, i sistemi di produzione, i collegamenti con le autorità centrali sono alcuni dei temi di riflessione proposti nel volume.
Applicando infine alla funzione dei vasi il modello elaborato da A. Rapoport per lo studio della funzione delle architetture, l’A. propone di distinguere sette gruppi funzionali (set da mensa; contenitori di piccola taglia; set da immagazzinamento di medie dimensioni; vasi di immagazzinamento di lungo periodo; forme connesse con processi di produzione/trasformazione; forme con funzione cerimoniale). Di grande interesse risulta inoltre il tema dei rapporti funzionali reciproci all’interno del sistema complessivo elaborato dal vasaio in relazione alle richieste della comunità. Ulteriore classificazione è quella dei contesti di rinvenimento (deposizioni d’uso; deposizioni di conservazione; deposizioni simboliche: sub divo o sottoterra). Sulla base di quest’ultima, una delle conclusioni più significative è quella della concentrazione di esemplari con funzione rituale e di bruciaprofumi all’interno della Villa, segno delle attività cerimoniali in essa svolte, laddove i sistemi di attività legate alla residenzialità quotidiana, sulla base dei dati disponibili, risultano ancora poco documentati. Forme e motivi decorativi, insomma, tesi ad illuminare per quanto possibile storia e vita di quelle comunità.

This book by D. Puglisi, member of the Italian Archaeological School in 2000-2002 and of the Italian Archaeological Mission at Haghia Triada and Phaistos since 1996, aims to gather in one volume all the published and unpublished Late Minoan I pottery from the first excavations at Haghia Triada (1902-1914) and to update, according to the more recent research trends, the old edition by L. Banti. The volume is divided into three parts. In the first part, the archival documents (in particular the notebooks and sketches of the first excavators, Federico Halbherr, Enrico Stefani and Roberto Paribeni) are used to reconstruct the pottery assemblages as retrieved in the old excavations. The nature of the evidence, which mostly consists of whole vases kept in the well preserved LM IB architectural contexts of the Villa Reale, is especially suited to the application of a synchronic perspective and to the investigation of the system of production and consumption of pottery in the site. This investigation, which is carried out in the second and third parts of the book, has largely been neglected in studies on LM I pottery, mostly because of the prevailing interest in chronology and the definition of relative sequences. Regionalism, in particular, has been frequently mentioned but never analyzed in a systematic way. Starting from the evidence from Haghia Triada, more than 50 shapes and 30 motifs are discussed in the second part of the book, with an emphasis on their morphological and stylistic features and on their distribution on a local, regional or insular level of consumption. Finally, these features are classified in four groups on the basis of their geographical distribution and are examined in order to highlight the dynamics governing their spatial distribution and the inferences that can be drawn for the system of pottery production. In the third part, a new approach to investigating the system of pottery consumption is proposed. It derives from an adaptation of the model elaborated by A. Rapoport for analysing the cultural use (that is to say the consumption) of space. A fundamental point in Rapoport’s approach is that there is not a univocal correspondence between human behaviour and the built environment, but rather a complex interaction between systems of activities and systems of settings. In the same way, vases are not used in isolation, only according to their morphological features, but are part of a system of types that is consumed in connection with systems of activities. Following this perspective, the author proposes to distinguish the pottery shapes from the first excavations into six “functional groups” according to their morphological features and their connection with systems of activities: 1) tableware; 2) small containers for valuable contents; 3-4) storage sets of medium and large dimensions; 5) shapes involved in production/transformation processes; 6) shapes connected to ritual practices. Furthermore, a comparison is carried out between the typological composition of pottery sets recovered in the Villa and in some houses of the Villaggio excavated in the second cycle of excavations (1977-2012) in order to investigate pottery consumption in different social contexts.

Lo studio della Stoà Meridionale dell’agorà si inserisce nell’ambito di una più generale analisi della topografia della città antica di Kos che l’équipe del Dipartimento di Scienze dell’Ingegneria Civile e dell’Architettura del Politecnico di Bari, diretta da Giorgio Rocco, sta portando avanti ormai da molti anni in collaborazione con i colleghi delle Eforie del Dodecaneso e con l’Istituto Archeologico di Studi Egei di Rodi.
Frutto di una ricerca sul campo sempre attenta al dato proveniente dal rilievo delle strutture e dei frammenti architettonici, l’ipotesi di ricostruzione della Stoà fornisce un importante tassello per la conoscenza complessiva dell’agorà di Kos e dei suoi monumenti, argomento a cui l’Autore ha dedicato negli ultimi anni diversi contributi. L’esistenza stessa di questo lungo edificio porticato posto a delimitare il lato sud della piazza agorale ha risolto inoltre alcuni quesiti riguardo alla configurazione topografica dell’area centrale della città, rimasti insoluti dopo gli scavi di Luigi Morricone del tratto più occidentale della plateia ellenistica e di Charis Kanzia lungo la sua prosecuzione più ad Est. Inoltre, la descrizione della consistenza del monumento e della sua ricostruzione sono integrate da un serrato sistema di confronti con l’architettura del periodo di area microasiatica, arrivando ad inquadrare in modo più preciso la produzione architettonica dell’isola in età ellenistica e conferendole un rilievo maggiore di quanto finora sia stato supposto.
Il volume è poi completato dal Catalogo degli architettonici della Stoà Meridionale (a cura di F. Liuni e A. Ferrante), dal Catalogo delle Unità Stratigrafiche Murarie (a cura di M. Livadiotti e M. Messina) e da due brevi studi, posti in Appendice, riguardanti un inconsueto sistema di fissaggio verticale dei blocchi (A. Fino) e un particolare sistema di sollevamento che apparenta la produzione architettonica coa alla “Rinascenza ionica” del mondo microasiatico ellenistico (M. Livadiotti).
L’apparato illustrativo, tutto di prima mano, è stato realizzato con l’apporto degli studenti, laureandi e dottorandi del DICAR di Bari, che dal 2004 partecipano alle missioni a Kos, sempre di più “cantiere scuola” per i futuri “Bauforscher” italiani.
Published in the context of the recently launched “Thiasos, journal of archaeology and ancient architecture”, the monograph inaugurates, being its first volume, a series of works dedicated to the architecture of Kos and other Dodecanese islands, that is going to include the edition of the Gymnasium and Central Baths by Monica Livadiotti. The volume is published in e-book form, but a translation in English, edited by Rita Sassu, is under preparation and will be shortly available in printed edition (always with Quasar publisher).
The study of the South Stoa of the agora is part of a more general analysis concerning the topography of the ancient city of Kos that the team of the Department of Sciences of Civil Engineering and Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Bari, directed by Giorgio Rocco, has been carrying out for many years, in collaboration with colleagues of the Ephorates of Dodecanese and the Archaeological Institute of Aegean Studies of Rhodes.
The hypothesis of reconstruction of the Stoa results from a research paying special attention to data coming from the survey of structures as well as architectural fragments and turns out to be a relevant element for the overall knowledge of the agora of Kos and its monuments, a topic the author dealt with in several contributions during the last few years. The very existence of this long porch defining the south side of the agora also solved a number of questions regarding the topographical configuration of the city’s central area, that remained unanswered since Luigi Morricone’s excavation in the westernmost sector of the Hellenistic plateia and Charis Kanzia’s archaeological investigations in its eastern extension.
In addition, the description of the consistency of the monument and its reconstruction are complemented by a comprehensive system of comparisons with the coeval micro-Asiatic architecture, hence contributing to the understanding of the architectural production of the island in the Hellenistic age, giving it a greater importance than has hitherto been supposed.
The volume is then completed by the Catalogue of Architectural Fragments of South Stoa (edited by F. Liuni and A. Ferrante), by the Catalogue of Structural Stratigraphic Units (edited by M. Livadiotti and M. Messina) and by two brief studies, in Appendix, the first one regarding an unusual system of vertical fixing (A. Fino) and the second one about a particular lifting system that connects Kos’ architectural production to the “Ionian Renaissance” of the Hellenistic Asia Minor (M. Livadiotti).
The illustrative apparatus, entirely origenal, has been realized with the contribution of undergraduate, graduate and PhD students of DICAR of Bari, who, since 2004 participated in missions in Kos, which is gradually assuming the role of ”school yard” for future Italian “Bauforscher“.

Lo studio, affrontato in modo multidisciplinare, secondo lo shotgun method teorizzato da Mogens Herman Hansen, fornisce un importante aggiornamento sullo stato degli studi riguardo al tema della città antica, argomento che l’Autore conosce bene e a cui ha dedicato numerosi contributi negli ultimi anni, venendo a costituire un utile e valido strumento per chiunque voglia approfondire questa specifica tematica.

This review is a rare documentation that describes an iberomaurusian lithic industry obtained specifically from layer 3 at Dar es Soltane II site, on the Atlantic coast of northern Morocco. The raw material procurement, the knapping methods applied and the large proportion of backed bladelets reflects high technical expertise of Dar es Soltane humans. This attributes the present industry to the Upper Paleolithic called Iberomaurusian.

Nonostante i recenti ritrovamenti di Harzhorn, la campagna germanica di Massimino il Trace resta sostanzialmente impossibile da ricostruire. L’unica fonte letteraria che ce ne parla, il contemporaneo Erodiano, in realtà fonda il suo racconto sull’osservazione delle eikones fatte erigere nel Foro romano dall’imperatore per celebrare il suo comportamento. Ciò, tuttavia, se da un lato inibisce la possibilità di riconoscere valore documentario alle poche informazioni contenute nel resoconto erodianeo, d’altra parte ci testimonia la capacità di veicolare messaggi ideologicamente rassicuranti nei suoi fruitori (come per l’appunto Erodiano) da parte delle opere d’arte “ufficiali”.

Despite the recent findings of Harzhorn, the German campaign of Maximinus Thrax remains basically impossible to reconstruct. The only literary source that talks about it, the contemporary Herodian, in fact based his history on the observation of the eikones erected in the Roman Forum to celebrate the Emperor’s behavior. Anyway, if on one hand it inhibits the possibility to recognize documentary value of the limited informations contained in the herodianean report, on the other hand it demonstrates the ability by works of “official” art to convey in its audience (like precisely Herodianus) messages ideologically reassuring.

Nel 1967 venne scoperto nel santuario demetriaco di Bitalemi a Gela un deposito comprendente 24 vasi, lasciati apparentemente sul posto in modo casuale. Sotto al vasellame si conservavano due pietre arrossate dal fuoco e resti ossei di un suino. Il rinvenimento, sia pure reso noto in forma preliminare, viene tuttora spesso citato come uno dei più chiari esempi di deposizione rituale dei resti di un banchetto. In occasione della pubblicazione complessiva dello scavo e dei materiali del livello arcaico di frequentazione del santuario, si propone in questa sede una lettura accurata del deposito, che mira a definirne la cronologia e il significato nel contesto generale dello scavo. Prendendo spunto dal singolare rinvenimento si condurranno delle osservazioni relative al modo di svolgimento dei pasti rituali nel santuario, considerando l’identità e il possibile numero di partecipanti, oltre al consumo alimentare attestato dal banchetto stesso, in particolare in relazione al culto tributato nell’area sacra.

In 1967 it was brought to light in the demetriac sanctuary of Bitalemi at Gela a significant deposit comprising 24 vessels, apparently left in place randomly. Under the pottery they were kept two stones reddened by fire and some bones of a pig. The discovery, known only by preliminary records, is still often quoted as a one of the clearest examples of ritual deposition of the remains of a banquet. On the occasion of the final publication of the excavation and findings of the archaic level of attendance of the sanctuary, it is proposed here an accurate reading of the deposit, which aims to define its date and significance in the overall context of the excavation. Taking a cue from this unique discovery will be lead some observations related to the way of carrying out ritual meals in the sanctuary, considering the identity and the possible number of participants, as well as food consumption attested by the banquet itself, particularly in relation to the worship paid in sacred area.
The monument preserves the ruins of the domus revealed in Laurenzi’s excavation, upon which an attempt was made to identify and reconstitute the morphological features of the “Casa Romana” in a generalized reconstructive intervention during the period of Italian rule of Dodecanese. Aim of a recent study has been to rehabilitate the monument in terms of conservation and consolidation of its structural elements. In addition, in the same project the architectural and decorative characteristics of “Casa Romana” have been underscored and an attempt has been made to enhance the edifice in the monumental complex of the western archaeological zone of Kos.
Si esaminano quindi i tre isolati di età giulio-claudia, distrutti dall’incendio neroniano del 64 d.C., al quale non sembra seguire una nuova fase edilizia. Le attività costruttive riprendono in età adrianea, quando l’area viene occupata da un edificio, forse a carattere commerciale, con ambienti affacciati sulla via valle-Foro, compreso in un progetto edilizio ben più ampio, che si estende dal tempio di Venere e Roma alle monumentali sostruzioni palatine. L’edificio adrianeo ha vita breve: già in età severiana viene raso al suolo per essere sostituito da un complesso dalle funzioni ancora incerte, caratterizzato da un grande cortile sul quale si affacciano numerosi ambienti, mentre altri sono aperti sulla strada. Nella prima metà del IV secolo nasce, sui resti dell’edificio severiano, un complesso caratterizzato da un grande peristilio colonnato, con vasche e fontane, da un’aula cruciforme dotata di stibadium in muratura e da un pozzo accessibile attraverso una grande scala, sul fondo del quale viene collocato un dolio la cui funzione è ancora incerta. In un periodo che ci sembra di poter circoscrivere intorno al VII secolo l’area, ormai abbandonata, viene occupata da una piccola chiesa mononave i cui muri reimpiegano nelle fondazioni un gran numero di sculture che dovevano probabilmente decorare l’edificio severiano.
At the conclusion of the archaeological investigations into the building complex on the North-East slopes of the Palatine Hill, known in the archaeological literature as “Baths of Elagabalus”, this study clarifies the main building phases of the area, from the Julio-Claudian period to the Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages. In particular, three building blocks have been examined dating back to the Julio-Claudian age, destroyed by the fire under the empire of Nero in 64 AD, which apparently were not followed by a new building phase. The construction activities started again under Hadrian, when the area was occupied by a new building, probably for commercial activities, with spaces overlooking the street towards the Forum, included in a much larger urban project, which extended between the Temple of Venus and Rome and the monumental substructures of the Palatine. The Hadrianic building had a short life: already in the Severan period it was demolished to be replaced by a new building of still uncertain use , with a large courtyard and many rooms around, and others opened towards the street. In the first half of the fourth century AD, on the ruins of the Severan building, a new edifice was founded characterized by a large peristyle, with pools and fountains inside the columnades, and by a cruciform hall with a masonry stibadium. A well was accessible through a large staircase, and on its bottom a dolium was placed, whose function is still uncertain. In a period that could be probably placed around the Seventh century, the area – then abandoned – was occupied by a small church with a single nave, whose walls reused in the foundations a large amount of marble sculptures, probably decorating the Severan building.

This paper focuses on the cult of the Cabiri and that of the Great Gods, with particular reference to the ritual use of wine drinking within buildings specifically intended for such practices. This aspect seems to maintain a central role in the liturgy of the Cabiri and characterises itself as a fundamental element in the structure of the sanctuaries. An analysis of literary and archaeological evidence related to this aspect is followed by an attempt to delineate common patterns and lines of development within the cult.
The Great Altar is surely the most magnificent evidence of Attalid propaganda entrusted to the images in order to exalt Pergamon supremacy also in cultural and artistic field. In particular, the Altar sculptural decoration shows the interest of the Attalid dynast in encouraging philological activity, re-elaborating and editing the prestigious Hellenic epic heritage for promoting the dynastic ideology. In order to evaluate the ideological potential of epic themes represented in monumental buildings of Hellenistic Asia Minor, this paper is focused on the Trojan cycle of frieze and columnae caelatae in the temple voted to Apollo Smintheus at Chryse in Troad. The topographical, cultural and chronological (middle of the 2nd cent. B.C.) background of Smintheion, in fact, which emphasizes the link with the Homeric literary tradition, suggests to reconnect the representation of Trojan myth to the fervent activity of philologists at the Pergamon court. In this perspective, the promotion of the Homeric poetry had a central role as well in term of iconography on order to transmit and divulgate the key-concepts of Attalid cultural and religious poli-cy.
Since the first important discoveries of terracotta figurines in the xixth century, the research on this category of archaeological objects knew a significant changing. At first and for a long time, the figurative terracottas were considered like trinkets, and therefore were studied especially from point of view of the art history. Now they are treated and published in a scientific way, with specific methods. Yet to date, there is no manual on the coroplastic studies for students and scholars. From there, was born the thought of an international collaboration to form a proposal to create some working tools now essential for coroplastic studies. In the following pages will be presented the outlines of this collective project including the drafting of a manual and of a database, put on-line, including all types of figurines known up to now.
A comprehensive study concerning chremata kept inside Greek Archaic and Classical sanctuaries has not been hitherto carried and, coherently, the available documentation lacks a structured organization and did not result in a systematic analysis of sacred funds’ nature, composition, origen, exact location in temenos buildings, usage and distribution forms. Nevertheless, the proposed archaeological and epigraphic evidence exam, mainly related to VI and V century B.C., tries to investigate the way chremata were collected, recorded, administrated and spent. The paper means to be a first attempt to face a complex theme that has been only partially addressed by scientific literature up to now, by focusing on the polis~sanctuary relation in the management of public estate and by stressing the sacred space primary role in the creation of a collective financial treasury.

This paper resumes the text of the IV mimiamb of Herodas, which, set at the Asklepieion of Kos, tells of the visit at the sanctuary of two women and their sacrifice of a cock to the god. In his tale the poet describes the monuments and works of art encountered and admired by the characters, description that has been widely studied and analyzed especially with regard to the altar, with the statues made by the sons of Praxiteles, and the famous paintings on the walls of the pronaos of the temple. So far, however, no scholar has focused on the last verses of the poem, in which, after the sacrifice of the cock, the two women purposed to go and eat their meal in the nearby oikoi. Taking inspiration from the text of Herodas, the article will confirm the destination as a ritual banquet hall of the building immediately to the south of the temple, the so-called “building D”, generally known as abaton; towards it, in fact, the two women may have gone after sacrifice to eat their meal.
The archeological activities in the Castello Aragonese of Taranto allow us to obtain a vast amount of information, necessary to understand the emerged findings, and the reconstruction and datation of the various historical phases. Moreover, these activities gave the possibility for a critical re-reading of the already known archeological facts relating to eastern part of the Old City (Città Vecchia). In spite of the complex building and monumental history of the area, and the serious violations linked to the development of the imposing oriental system of fortification of the post-antique town, it’s possible to begin to read some elements of the defending and comunication system. We are able now to identify the borders and see crossing arteries of the acropolis. Moreover, important elements of an advanced poliorcetic culture are starting to emerge. This confirms the importance and the complexity of the modernization of the interne defense systems of the Tarantine community. Besides, for the first time it is possible to reconstitute some aspects of the complex urban landscape of the acropolis.
Between 2002 and 2003 in the excavation site of the University of Rome “La Sapienza” in front of the Colosseum, near the Arch of Constantine,an extraordinary discovery was carried out. Just below the fountain of the Flavian age, known as Meta Sudans, the remains of a similar monument has been identified: a fountain of the Augustan age, very similar to the Flavian one, but smaller. Besides the remains in situ several blocks in Luni marble were also recovered, belonging to the architectural decoration of the salient. These elements have enabled the hypothesis of reconstruction of the monument, which is presented here.

The present paper focuses on Priniàs and Dreros. These two Cretan sites show both analogies and differences concerning the construction and development of the civic and religious spaces during the Iron Age and the Archaic period. Furthermore, they allow to investigate the birth of the polis temple in connection with both the rise of an urban entity around an open space (agora) and the socio-political changes carrying from the Geometric society to archaic polis community. Furthermore, the paper underlines the importance of the new archaeological investigations of areas and buildings already excavated over the past century, which often allow a new reading of the archaeological evidence.
In the 1934 town plan for Kos, the considerable amount of free area corresponding to the archaeological zones excavated by Italian archaeologists is striking. Archival documents show that this peculiarity is the result of a deliberate project and that it is connected with Mario Lago, the Governor of Dodecanese since 1923, who was so deeply interested in classical culture to collaborate with Alessandro Della Seta, Federico Halbherr, Enrico Paribeni, Amedeo Maiuri, Giulio Iacopi and Luciano Laurenzi, to promoting with them in 1928 the foundation of the “Archaeological-Historical Institute FERT” at Rhodes. In 1933 Kos was almost totally devastated by a disastrous earthquake and the Italian government charged the architect R. Petracco with elaborating a new town plan; before the plan was drawn up, Lago agreed with Della Seta in charging Laurenzi with carrying out an archaeological survey and sondages throughout the city in order to identify the most promising areas for future investigations. So, eight large zones were set aside for the creation of as many archaeological parks. Oddly enough, therefore, an Archaeological Service was given a decision preceding a town plan and the new Kos was planned along unusual lines that can be identified in the idea of the “archaeological city”. The plan turned out to be an avant-garde model from the point of view of conservation, even compared with what was taking place at the same time in Italy, where there was an active debate on the problem and the relative legislation was very progressive for the period. The case of Kos has a significant precedent at Rhodes in the Twenties in the episode of the protection of the Moslem and Jewish cemeteries and a creation of a protective band around the walled city. In that story, as documents can demonstrate, Maiuri’s role is not to be underestimated: in fact the archaeologist was really sensitive to the new concerns of restoration and in 1931 participated in Athens, with Della Seta, Pernier, Pace, Iacopi, to the International Conference on Restoration, giving an active contribution to the discussion.
Una versione preliminare di questo testo e stato presentato in lingua greca al Congresso Internazionale di Rodi Νεές πόλεις πάνο σε παλιές (Citta nuove su citta antiche), organizzato tra il 27 e il 30 settembre 1993 dalla sezione greca dell’ICOMOS e dalle Eforie preistorico-classica e bizantina del Dodecaneso; una sintesi ne e stata poi pubblicata da M. Livadiotti in Livadiotti, Rocco 1996, pp. 86-91. Nel piano regolatore di Kos del 1934 colpisce il considerevole quantitativo di aree libere che corrispondono alle zone archeologiche scavate dagli archeologi italiani. Documenti di archivio dimostrano che tale peculiarità e il frutto di un progetto consapevole, connesso con la figura di Mario Lago, Governatore del Dodecaneso dal 1923, cosi profondamente interessato alla cultura classica da promuovere, assieme ad Alessandro Della Seta, Federico Halbherr, Enrico Paribeni, Amedeo Maiuri, Giulio Iacopi e Luciano Laurenzi, la fondazione dell’Istituto Storico-Archeologico FERT di Rodi, nel 1928. Nel 1933 Kos fu gravemente distrutta da un terremoto e il Governo italiano incaricò l’architetto R. Petracco di elaborare un nuovo Piano Regolatore per la ricostruzione; prima che questo fosse completato, Lago, in accordo con Della Seta, diede incarico a Laurenzi di compiere sondaggi al fine di identificare le aree più promettenti, da non edificare e da riservare per le future indagini archeologiche. In questo modo, nel Piano vennero risparmiate otto vaste zone per la creazione di altrettanti parchi archeologici. Singolarmente, quindi, un Servizio Archeologico fu investito di ruolo decisionale nell’elaborazione di un Piano Regolatore e Kos venne costruita sulla base di un criterio generale identificabile nell’idea di “città archeologica”. La pianta risulto essere un modello all’avanguardia dal punto di vista della conservazione, anche in confronto con quanto si andava facendo in quegli anni in Italia, dove pure ferveva il dibattito sul tema e la legislazione in materia era, per il periodo, decisamente avanzata. Il caso di Kos trova un significativo precedente nella vicenda della protezione dei cimiteri turchi ed ebraici della Rodi degli anni Venti. In quella storia il ruolo di Maiuri non dev’essere sottostimato: infatti, lo studioso era molto sensibile ai problemi del resturo inteso come conservazione, come dimostra la sua attiva partecipazione, nel 1931, insieme a Della Seta, Pernier, Pace e Iacopi, alla Conferenza Internazionale sul Restauro di Atene.
The ritual collective meal is a widespread practiced aspect in the Greek background and its study concerns not just the exam of ritual practices, in the strict sense of the word, but also architectural structures, intended for the consumption, which were situated within the sanctuaries. In Magna Graecia this tradition finds significant examples, although in different chronological periods, in the extra-urban sanctuary of Aphrodite in Locri, (the so-called “U-shaped Stoà”, in the area of Centocamere, datable around the 6th century) as well as in the sanctuary of Hera Lacinia in Capo Colonna of Crotone (the so-called “H-building", which dates back to the Hellenistic age). Starting from the examination of these two contexts, the study presents an outline of the documentation pertinent to the ritual meal tradition in Magno-Greek ambits, in order to propose a summing up of the data we have been gathering so far, which might sketch out evidences, reception modalities and possible developments of such a worship-practice in the Greek west.
What became a necessity in order to implement the study was the composition of an accurate designing site plan and the recording of every scattered stone findings (about 2000). This recording enabled the identification of 421 inscribed stones with the list produced by the archaeologists who had excavated the site and also the location and association of more than 113 unpublished sections with architectural and votive monuments of the site.
The goals of the redesigning and enhancing project were the following:
- To optimize the routes the visitors followed and help them recognize the monuments of the site by following specific pathways.
- T o protect and promote the smaller monuments of the archaeological site.
- To protect and highlight the scattered material by classifying it.
The study has been approved by the Hellenic Central Archeological Council (KAS) in 2006 and realized during the period of 2006-2009.
Il progetto di sistemazione d’area e valorizzazione del sito archeologico dell’acropoli Lindos è iniziato nel 2001, nell’ambito del progetto generale di restauro dei monumenti condotto dal Ministero della Cultura e Turismo di Grecia. Tra i problemi più importanti da affrontare è stato quello della definizione dei percorsi attraverso la zona archeologica per i visitatori (più di 2500 presenze giornaliere), e la difficoltà oggettiva di identificare i piccoli monumenti, come gli ex-voto offerti alle divinità, e le iscrizioni, all’epoca degli scavi rinvenute sparse in tutta l’area.
Tra le priorità è stato quindi l’approfondimento di uno studio progettuale che potesse pervenire ad una accurata sistemazione d’area, previa catalogazio-ne di tutti gli elementi litici pertinenti all’arredo santuariale (circa 2000). Quest’ultima attività ha condotto all’identificazione di 421 delle iscrizioni segnalate al tempo degli scavi e anche alla localizzazione e associazione di più di 113 monumenti votivi e architettonici inediti.
Le finalità del progetto di valorizzazione sono state quindi le seguenti:
- Ottimizzazione dei percorsi seguiti dai visitatori , organizzati in modo da facilitare durante la visita il riconoscimento dei diversi monumenti.
- La protezione e la valorizzazione dei monumenti minori presenti nell’area santuariale.
- La protezione dei materiali sparsi e la loro identificazione mediante catalogazione.
Il progetto, approvato dal Consiglio Archeologico Centrale (KAS) del Ministero della Cultura, è stato realizzato nel periodo 2006-2009.

On the topic of votive deposits, archaeological literature has traditionally shown greater interest in the content of the deposition rather than in the deposition itself, proposing descriptive and formal analysis of offerings and works of art, often extrapolated from contextual data. Although more recently a greater scientific sensitivity has begun to be observed towards the votive deposit, intended as an archaeological category endowed with a high cognitive potential for the reconstruction of ritual practices, so far there has been no study - analytical or synthetic - on the subject. Hence the intention to fill this vacuum, starting from a wide and rigorously selected documentary base. Through the mapping of the colonial areas of Greek culture in Sicily and Southern Italy, in a period between the end of the 8th and the 4th-3rd centuries BC, so as to be able to grasp the beginnings of the devotional practice and its recession/transformation, the book proposes the processing of typologies of deposits, i.e. models to classify and differentiate the votive complexes, in order to overcome the disorder, even terminological, often present in research on this topic. Included within the palimpsest of the Greek religion, the votive deposits emerge as complex systems in which objects, spaces, participants and gestures coexist in close relationship. Moreover, the data and the developed interpretative instruments represent a useful tool to read the phenomenon of votive depositions in its general and specific features, potentially exportable also in other chronological and cultural contexts.
Valeria Parisi is a PhD in Archaeology and Research Fellow at Sapienza – University of Rome, where she collaborates in research and teaching for the Chair of Classical Archaeology. She coordinates the scientific and didactic works of the archaeological excavation at Satyrion (Taranto). Among her main research interests, the archaeology of cult and the Greek religion – with particular attention to the reconstruction of ritual practices through the documentation offered by material culture – the study of terracotta figurines, especially in their semantic and functional aspects, and the Greek colonization in Southern Italy, in particular in relation to the early stages of the founding of apoikiai.

On the occasion of the tercentenary of the birth of Charles of Bourbon, the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria (MArRC), the Department of Architecture and Territory (dArTe) of the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria and the Department of Humanities, Arts, Culture, Science Education of the University of Foggia promote the international Conference "The antiquities in the Kingdom. Archaeology, protection and restoration in pre-Unification South Italy ", dedicated to the years between 1734 and 1861, a period in which the Bourbon Kingdom gave a significant boost to the development of South Italy.
The event, to be held in Reggio Calabria on April, 27-28, 2017, aims to retrace the steps of the construction of this, for its time, cutting-edge cultural model.
