Gentoo Linuxをインストールするためには、とにかく何らかのLinux（CDブートで動くもの）が必要。FDブートでできる方法もないではないが、CDブートの方が容易。今回は、Gentoo LinuxのLiveCDを使うことにする（KNOPPIXを使う方法もある）。 Gentoo Linux Mirrorsで、適当なミラーサイトを選択する。国内のサイト（「Japan」となっているもの）がいいだろう。 ミラーサイトを選択したら、/releases/x86/2004.2/livecdからinstall-x86-minimal-2004.2.isoをダウンロードする。これをCD-RやCD-RWに焼いてブータブルCDを作成する。ISOイメージファイルであることを考慮して焼かないと、「install-x86-minimal-2004.2.isoというファイルが書き込まれたCD」になってしまうので
