An improvement whose time has come We always aim to keep the layout of the app as simple as possible. Consequently, separating the weather map and the search made sense.
But as we have been adding more features, there are many cases where it would be practical to have a search option available in the weather map and vice versa.
Therefore, all search functions and features are combined into the wind map. We’re also updating the map menu with more display options so that you can adjust the look and feel of the map according to your needs and preferences.
What changes
Search on map We are adding a new button in the top right corner of the map view. Tapping this button toggles the search – simple, isn’t it?
Search results will be displayed as a list, just like before. Tap a search result to reveal its location on the map or to jump directly to weather forecasts and measurement data.
Labels and markers for places, favorites, and Windfinder spots All markers and labels for spots and places will be available on the map. In addition, the markers are adjusted for simplification and a better overview.
We are adding options to hide (or show) these spots, places, and favorites to the map menu. This way, the map is always as dense or lightweight as you want.
New bottom bar navigation We have designed the new navigation symbol to communicate that search and map have been combined.
What doesn’t change
Everything else remains the way you know it.
When it is available
Very soon.
Thanks for reading! As usual, we welcome your feedback or any suggestions you may have to make the Windfinder app better. You can reach us by simply sending an email to support@windfinder.com or using the feedback option in the app. We look forward to hearing from you!
The Kiel Week, one of the biggest sailing regattas in the world and the largest summer festival in Northern Europe has opened today. 4000 sailors from more than 50 countries are coming to Kiel/Germany, which is the home of Windfinder, to compete in 43 sailing classes like 470, 49er, Finn, Laser, Nacra 17, RS:X on 10 race courses from June 20 to June 28 off the coast of the Baltic Sea.
As the partner of Hamburg the city of Kiel wants to host the sailing competitions of the Summer Olympics in 2024 for the 3rd time after having been the venue of the Olympic’s sailing venue in 1936 and 1972. The Kiel week has lost the status of of sailing world cup in 2012 and is looking to regain this status due to some difficulties with the Intenational Sailing Federation. Hamburg’s bid for the Summer Olympics 2024 could help regain this status.
Spectators get to see daring moves and jumps at the at Ocean Jump in the city center. Windsurfers and BMX bikers compete for the world title by jumping off a 30 meter high ramp with a windsurf sail mounted to a skateboard or mountainboard or with a BMX bikes and doing crazy tricks and moves in the air before slumping into the water of the Kiel fjord.
One of the highlights of the Kiel Week is the Windjammer parade on the final weekend of the Kiel Week. The parade of more than 100 traditional and tall ship is headed this year by the German sail training ship “Gorch Fock”. The Polish three-masted full-rigged ship “Dar Mlodziezy” and the biggest traditional windjammer of the world, the Russian four-masted barque “Sedov” also belong to the official parade. The three-masted topsail schooner “Gulden Leeuw” (Golden Lion) from the Netherlands, the Kieler topsail schooner “Thor Heyerdahl” and the 5-star cruise sailors “Sea Cloud II” are also part of the maritime finale of the Kieler Woche. In addition, many other major international and traditional sailing ships, steamers and escort vehicles and many small boats and yachts cruise the Kiel fjord at the windjammer parade.
After the recent update of our wind and weather forecast model, we have also upgraded the wave forecast model for all surfers and wave enthusiasts. The wave forecasts now also feature a full set of 10 days of forecasts. In addition to that, the forecast model now uses a more advanced physics model and a higher resolution bathymetry model.
Today we have released a major update of our forecast models. The update features two main aspects of forecasts - higher resolution and longer duration.
Previously the forecast was run on a ~27km grid and outputted on a 0.5° grid. This has doubled, the forecast now uses a ~13km grid and is outputted on a 0.25° grid. In general, with a higher resolution the forecast model is able to better predict changes that happen on a smaller scale like in complex topography etc.
We also extended the forecast duration. Forecasts are now available for up to 10 days in the future. The forecasts are still available in three-hour timesteps. This is especially useful for long-term planning and travel. Please note that the forecast accuracy decreases the further you look into the future.
In addition to that, there were a lot of physics related options updated to the latest research results.
Please let us know what you think about our new forecasts!
The changes include a higher resolution (about 27km at the moment), more advanced physics options and also computation of wind gusts! You can find the wind gusts row below the wind speed bars.
We are always interested in how the new Forecast model works
