Mission Statement
Charlotte Sports Medicine Department is dedicated to providing the high quality health care to all student athletes and instilling lifelong healthy practices and injury prevention knowledge. The Sports Medicine Staff at Charlotte is here to facilitate care and education to student athletes and mentor athletic training students.
As an integral part of the Charlotte Athletic Department, Charlotte Sports Medicine operates under the guidelines of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), American Athletic Association (AAC), UNC Charlotte, National Athletic Trainers' Association, Center for Disease Control (CDC), and the Charlotte 49ers Department of Athletics.
Introduction to Charlotte Sports Medicine
Charlotte Sports Medicine staff operates under the direction of Team Physician and UNC Charlotte Medical Director Robert Jones, M.D. and led by Director of Sports Medicine, Tony Cordova, MS, LAT, ATC. Charlotte Athletics partnered with Atrium Health to provide the very best in medical care for each Charlotte 49er student-athlete.
Atrium Health provides a dedicated team of fourteen full-time certified athletic trainers on site at UNC Charlotte. Atrium Health is one of the leading healthcare organizations in the southeast and one of the most comprehensive, not-for-profit systems in the country and includes more than nine-hundred care locations. UNC Charlotte Athletics is also partnered with OrthoCarolina, which is one of the nation's leading orthopedic practices with expertise in the areas of foot and ankle, hand, hip, knee, shoulder, elbow, spine, and sports medicine.
The Charlotte 49ers Sports Medicine staff provides injury recognition, acute injury care, emergency management, injury rehabilitation, professional development, nutritional guidance and injury prevention techniques to all of our student athletes. At Charlotte, our Athletic Trainers develop relationships with student-athletes as individuals and have a comprehensive understanding of each athlete's medical backgrounds. Being fortunate enough to have a unique situation of one athletic trainer per team provides for an efficient and streamlined standard of care.
What is an athletic trainer?
Athletic trainers (ATs) as defined by the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who render service or treatment, under the direction of or in collaboration with a physician, in accordance with their education, training and the state's statutes, rules and regulations. As a part of the health care team, services provided by athletic trainers include primary care, injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergent care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.
