The ECU Athletics Hall of Fame was initiated in 1974 to pay tribute and give the highest recognition to former athletics letterwinners, coaches, administrators, and others who, by direct participation have made exceptional contributions to the athletics program at ECU.
The first honorees were inducted during Homecoming festivities at halftime of the ECU-The Citadel football game in 1974. Ten members were selected for the first year. Since then, at least one new inductee has been added each year, with the exception of a five-year span in the mid-1980s and 2020 (COVID pandemic). Justine Allpress, Jeff Charles, Roderick Coleman and Seth Maness were elected to the Hall of Fame in 2023, bringing the total number of inductees to 187.
To be selected, the candidate's athletic achievements and contribution to sports while at ECU or as an Alumnus/Alumna must have been widely recognized over the area served by the University, enhancing the reputation of the University as well as of himself/herself. The Hall of Fame Committee shall be responsible for the selection of inductees for membership in The ECU Athletics Hall of Fame.
The nomination form on this page provides instructions for submitting individuals for consideration. To be eligible for selection, a candidate should not have represented ECU as a student-athlete for a minimum period of ten (10) years immediately preceding the date of induction or must not be a full-time member of the ECU faculty or staff in the category for which the inductee is being honored at the time of election and induction.
Each inductee is honored with their picture and accomplishments in the Walter & Marie Williams Athletic Hall of Fame Gallery located in the Smith-Williams Center.
