System details

RStudio Version : desktop
OS Version : Windows 10
R Version : 4.4.1 and 4.4.2

Steps to reproduce the problem

RStudio freezes and shows a white screen on startup.

Describe the problem in detail

In a Windows 10 environment, RStudio freezes when starting, and the same issue occurred with the previous version as well. Even after updating, it still gets stuck at this point. I have tried many methods, but none have worked. Reinstalling R and RStudio, as well as clearing the cache, have all been ineffective.

Describe the behavior you expected

Image

  • I have read the guide for submitting good bug reports.
  • I have installed the latest version of RStudio, and confirmed that the issue still persists.
  • If I am reporting an RStudio crash, I have included a diagnostics report.
  • I have done my best to include a minimal, self-contained set of instructions for consistently reproducing the issue.

Is this the behavior you are experiencing?

I've been trying to chase down what this could be for a while. I upgraded to RStudio 12.0+467 and it seems maybe marginally better, but not really. I'm on Windows 11 Enterprise behind some US Government (U.S. Geological Survey) IT compliance rules, but it's not that bad and has worked in the passed.

When starting RStudio for the first time, it freezes, but it runs normally on the second launch. This happens every time: it always gets stuck on the first launch.

I ran the command in CMD to start RStudio for the first time, and the screenshot is as follows.Image

Judging by the screen, the splash screen never goes away?

Judging by the screen, the splash screen never goes away?

"Yes, it will be stuck during the first startup and won't disappear; I have to force quit the process. The second time I start it, everything works fine. If I restart the computer, it gets stuck again on the first attempt and works normally on the second attempt."

Can you try eliminating the splash screen by setting a Windows environment variable to turn it off? Set
RS_NO_SPLASH with the value 1.

The problem remains, but there is no longer a splash screen; it still freezes and shows a white screen. I have already turned off the firewall.

Regarding the "Network service crashed, restarting service." error, it sounds like this may be a known upstream issue. See also:

electron/electron#43400

However, it seems like that should only cause the application to start slower; it should still start successfully in the end. You could see if this suggested workaround helps:

export RSTUDIO_CHROMIUM_ARGUMENTS="--password-store=basic"
rstudio

The "GPU process exited unexpectedly" error seems likely to be related to the version of Electron used in the latest release of RStudio; perhaps it's not compatible with your GPU / GPU drivers / some combination of those.
