Fairfax, Va. – The Duquesne University volleyball team began its final regular season series at George Mason on Friday night, dropping a 3-0 decision to the Patriots inside the Recreation Athletic Complex. With the loss, the Dukes fall to 13-16 overall and 4-13 in Atlantic 10 play.
POINT OF EMPHASIS
It was a back-and-forth affair to begin the opening set as both teams traded the first 10 points of the contest. The Patriots would take a 9-6 advantage off a 4-1 stint before junior
Carsyn Henschen found the floor successfully to stop the stint. George Mason (10-19, 5-12) would net six of the next 10 points to take a 15-11 advantage heading into the media timeout. Out of the break, the Dukes would trim the deficit, thanks to a 5-3 run (18-16). After a point by the Patriots, sophomore
Chloe Wilmot registered a point, followed by a service ace from freshman
Emersen Schrom. George Mason registered consecutive points before a pair of miscues by the Patriots and a kill from sophomore
Avery Hobson capped the run. The home team responded with five of the next seven points to stretch its lead before taking the first set, 25-21. The Dukes hit .258 for the set while posting 12 kills and a pair of aces.
THE RUN
The Patriots took a 2-0 advantage after capturing a 25-12 win in set two. In the third stanza, George Mason jumped out to a 6-4 advantage before the Dukes sparked a 4-2 stint to knot the score at 8-all. A service error started the run for Duquesne followed by a block from graduate student
Elizabeth Drelling and freshman
Mirabella Iriarte. After a point from the home team, Drelling found the floor successfully again before Iriarte capped the run with a kill. George Mason counted with four of the next five points before Drelling stopped the bleeding with a successful swing, 14-11. The Patriots strung together a 5-1 run to stretch its lead 19-12. Duquesne responded in a big way, scoring seven of the next eight points to cut the deficit to one (20-19). Schrom started the run with a kill, followed by a Patriots miscue and consecutive kills from Iriarte. George Mason netted a point before Henschen registered a point as well as a block from junior
Ariel Helm and an ace from Iriarte to force a Patriots timeout. The Dukes would eventually tie the score at 21-21 on a rejection from Helm and Schrom but George Mason ended the match on a 4-1 stint to take the set and the match, 25-21.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Emersen Schrom would pace the Dukes with nine kills, three digs, three service aces, and a pair of blocks.
Carsyn Henschen registered six kills and a dig while
Ariel Helm,
Avery Hobson and
Mirabella Iriarte each totaled five successful swings. Helm ended with three blocks while Hobson totaled three digs and Iriarte recorded one block, one dig, and one ace.
Chloe Wilmot recorded her ninth double-double of the season, posting 21 assists, 15 digs, and one ace while graduate student
Grace Kristofic finished with eight assists.
