Matthew Brinton joined the Duquesne swimming and diving coaching staff in July of 2024 and enters his first season with the Dukes.
Brinton joins the Dukes after spending the last three seasons as the head coach at Division II Frostburg State. Under his tutelage, Brinton led the women's swimming team to three consecutive Mountain East Conference titles (2022, 2023, 2024) while leading the men's team to back-to-back MEC Championships (2023, 2024). On the women's side, he coached 26 individual conference champions while tallying 12 on the men's team, including an NCAA consideration qualifier. In his final season, he featured the MEC Men's Swimmer of the Year before headlining both the men's and women's Swimmer of the Year as well as the MEC Women's Rookie of the Year in 2023. Brinton has been awarded the MEC Coach of the Year four total times, winning the prestigious honor back-to-back seasons on both the men's and women's side (2023, 2024).
During his tenure in Frostburg, Maryland, he led the men's team to an overall record of 19-9, including a 14-2 mark against conference opponents. Brinton continued his excellence on the women's side as he led them to a 23-10 overall mark while posting a perfect 16-0 record in conference action. While coaching at Frostburg State, he was the NCAA Division II Coaches Connection Representative for the MEC.
Prior to his stint at Frostburg, Brinton spent a season as head coach at Division II King University. Under his leadership, he led the Tornados to 16 new school records while producing 13 top three finishers at the Conference Carolinas Championships. He recorded a pair of NCAA Division II B Cuts while having one individual conference champion. He also served as an assistant coach at Emory & Henry College in 2020-21, where he was the recruiting coordinator for both programs and had deck coaching responsibilities. As the recruiting coordinator, Brinton was able to bring in the largest recruiting class in school history.
Brinton, a native of Landenberg, Pennsylvania, is a 2017 graduate of Towson University with a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology, anthropology, and criminal justice. With the Tigers, he helped push them to the U.S. Nationals and capture the Colonial Athletic Association Conference Championship in 2013-14. Brinton still owns top-10 times in school history in the 50-yard freestyle as well as the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke. He also owns the freshman record in the 100-yard backstroke.
