To be able to achieve wall press UP (down is a different thing) is definitely a buzz and it gives you a feeling of the movement BUT because you have the wall there, you are not using your shoulders nowhere near as you need for the actual press. It also does not help with the fear of leaning forward because you know there is a wall you rely on. 

It is not a bad move to practice at all - I started with it but elevated press is much more important!!

Start with single leg press from chair,  box and get comfortable with them. No kicking. You are working on your shoulder strength and also practicing leaning forward. 

You can still have the wall in front of you but not to lean on it just as a safe space to begin with.
