Peace Building and Security

“We must recognize how interconnected the safety of our communities is with the safety and security of our neighbors here and abroad. To achieve long-lasting peace, we must address the root causes of crime and violence and envision a future where our shared humanity is centered. We must work on policies of solidarity, cooperation, and diplomacy; policies that honor our collective safety and peace.”

Congresswoman Ramirez believes America is part of an interconnected global community. As a co-sponsor of the International Human Rights Defense Act, the Global Respect Act, and the GLOBE Act, Ramirez is dedicated to strengthening our partnerships abroad and promoting democracy, diplomacy, justice, and peace. Ramirez participated in the inaugural Pan-American Congress, a gathering of progressive legislators from North, Central, and South America to address the challenges facing the Western Hemisphere, including democracy, the climate crisis, and peacebuilding. Ramirez remains a strong advocate of peace through diplomacy, solidarity, and cooperation.

Congresswoman Ramirez recognizes the importance of reforming our criminal legal system to keep all our communities safe. As a co-sponsor of Ethan’s Law, the Keep Americans Safe Act, and the Break the Cycle of Violence Act, she advocates for gun violence prevention policies that address the root causes of crime and programs that strengthen community violence prevention and interruption. Congresswoman Ramirez believes that building safer neighborhoods requires a new approach that rightsizes the role of policing in communities, expands mental health and social services, and provides youth employment, economic opportunities, and restorative justice programs.

As the Vice Ranking Member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, Congresswoman Ramirez knows that a threat to our national security is the flow of contraband across our border, particularly the trafficking of fentanyl by U.S. citizens and the export of illegal guns to Mexico. Congresswoman Ramirez advocates we abandon the decades of failed border enforcement policies and support for ineffective initiatives and reject the scapegoating of asylees seeking safety. She has advocated for policies like the Smart Border Protection Act that make our border secure for our communities and asylum seekers.
