Paint Creek in Washington Court House, Ohio, has high levels of nitrogen and phosphorous-based nutrients that are undesirable in order to sustain aquatic life and the tributary’s integrity. In order to effectively remove unwanted nutrients from Paint Creek and provide supplementary flood control measures, we proposed that a wetland designed for wastewater treatment should be implemented. This form of treatment focuses on effectively removing contaminants through methods that will integrate with the existing ecosystem rather than disrupting it. In undertaking the project at Washington Court House’s Paint Creek, we seek to reduce the level of contamination which is present at a potentially harmful level. Constructed wetlands take an all-encompassing approach by utilizing a solution that is proven to be biologically effective and is also considerate of the natural habitat.
