Appalachia is largely rural, and residents have less contact with physicians, lower levels of preventive care, and less health insurance coverage for the nonelderly than the general U.S. population. The incidence of colorectal cancer in Appalachian areas of Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia has been found to be greater than the incidence in other areas of the United States. To investigate community-based methods to address this health disparity, the Appalachia Cancer Network (ACN) developed and implemented three coordinated investigations of Screen for Life: National Colorectal Cancer Action Campaign, a national, multiyear, multimedia campaign to promote colorectal cancer education and screening among men and women aged 50 years and older. T he objectives of the study described in this article were to test training and resource materials for preparing Kentucky public health agency staff to lead the National Local Public Health System Performance Assessment and to identify barriers encountered in implementation. Readiness supports provided to five Kentucky district and county health departments that led the system assessment process in 12 counties were evaluated using training pre-and posttests, performance assessment posttests, observations, and interviews. The training and materials provided in this study appeared to be the minimum needed for these Kentucky health departments. Training sequences need to allow time for independent study of assessment processes, and training in using and interpreting the assessment instrument should be included. Partner orientation materials targeted for nonpublic health partners would be useful. In Kentucky, barriers to completing the assessment included questions about its purpose and benefits and the lack of a self-identified local public health system. Formal training of health department staff, committed leadership, and adequate personnel resources can help overcome these barriers. The health departments that brought together system partners for the performance assessment considered it a valuable community-building educational event.

Hegemonic power structures in Appalachia solidified during the Industrial Age and hegemonic discourse continues to shape representations & economic strategies today. Appalachia is an isolated land of atavistic hillbillies in the public consciousness, who have alternately been uplifted and oppressed by coal extraction. Archaeology helps craft different narratives of power, illustrating that Appalachian residents were not simply left behind by modern America (culture of poverty model), nor stamped by the boot of capitalism (internal colonization model). Emancipatory spaces exist-and always have-in the interstices of mutually constituted power structures, such as corporate paternalism, gender, race, and class, and everyday activism occurred at the household level. We can't envision emancipatory efforts in contemporary Appalachia until we denaturalize capitalocentrism and consider Appalachia beyond hegemonic representations of an empty region waiting to be filled with capitalism, or a zone of economic and social domination. Company coal towns, popularly considered the ultimate manifestation of capitalist oppression, were rich grounds of 'everyday activism,' and historic strategies can be reclaimed for contemporary empowerment.

Editing this volume has been both a political and personal project for me. As a longtime sufferer of a chronic illness, I have been interested in how disparities in healthcare, be it the care an individual receives or the care an individual can afford, shape an individual's life course. Healthcare is not apolitical; a person's class, gender, citizenship, and racial status can determine the quality and amount of care they receive. As we see here in the United States, the first people who were tested for COVID-19 were not those who were vulnerable, on the frontlines of fighting the virus, and in need, but rather wealthy politicians and athletes who had the capital and power to access tests. In the middle of this pandemic, the structural factors influencing people's care seem insurmountable. How do we fix this system given the politicalization of masks, the material culture essential to preventing the spread of COVID-19?

The paper explores the market place as a transforming social space, following the dam-induced displacement of a town's residents and the submergence of the town. It is based on the town of Tehri and its bazaar, submerged by the Tehri dam in the Himalayan region of Tehri Garhwal. It is written in the voice of the town's market, which is now submerged beneath the dam reservoir waters.

In this article, a door becomes the medium through which its owner discusses their former life before displacement and current life in a post-displacement resettlement colony. It also explores the changing meanings and roles of the objects in our lives, where a former door to a house is now serving as a reminder of displacement as well as a now lost known way of life. The article is based on the displacement by the Tehri dam in the Himalayan region of Tehri Garhwal.

Conceived in 1949, the Tehri dam in the Garhwal region of the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, India, affected close to one hundred thousand people. The town of Tehri and thirty-five villages were completely submerged while seventy-four villages were partially submerged, leading to re-settlement across the state. This led to the usage of the Hindi word 'visthapit' as a category of identity and marginalisation.
The term became a prolonged label rather than a description of a particular moment of uprooting. Many people moved to their new physical and social locations bearing the tag of visthapit, belonging to a visthapit group, and inhabiting a visthapit colony. Various narratives give insights into different dimensions of being a visthapit - which can simultaneously mean an externally imposed identity, an internalised identity, a means to make claims about relative marginalisation, and a means to organize for action from the state. Based on my ethnographic doctoral research during 2013-14 in Uttarakhand, this paper explores how visthapit has been used in a range of contexts, beginning from the inception of the dam to the present day.

When the Tehri Dam in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand submerged the town of Tehri, the locals found themselves turned into visthapit (the 'displaced'). This new position, a consequence of dam induced displacement and relocation to new geographies, triggered recollections of their previous lives in Tehri. Often recalled as a local cultural centre for surrounding villages, the old town appears in daily conversations of its former residents. By discussing Tehri, the oustees return to a place they can now experience only tangentially. This article explores how displacement and belonging come to be expressed through a place that has no existing cartographic coordinates-a place living in memories. My ethnographic work in the town of New Tehri, a namesake built for the purpose of relocation, guides these arguments.
