Abstract This study measured the quality of student bibliographies through creation of a faceted taxonomy flexible and fine-grained enough to encompass the variety of online sources cited by today's students. The taxonomy was developed via interviews with faculty, iterative refinement of categories and scoring, and testing on example student bibliographies.

ABSTRACT Effective formal learning about digital curation must take place both in the classroom and in the field. This paper discusses how the cognitive apprenticeship model is being applied in the new Preservation of Information specialization at the University of Michigan School of Information to foster learning inside and outside the classroom.

Abstract We know little about the data reuse practices of novice data users. Yet large scale data reuse over the long term depends in part on uptake from early career researchers. This paper examines 22 novice social science researchers and how they make sense of social science data. Novices are particularly interested in understanding how data: 1) are transformed from qualitative to quantitative data, 2) capture concepts not well-established in the literature, and 3) can be matched and merged across multiple datasets.

ABSTRACT: This paper explores the concept of common ground as it applies to researchers using primary sources. It examines common ground through two activities central to making sense of archives and locating sources: defining what an archives is and identifying and using access tools, and through one type of venue for explicitly establishing common ground: user education. Overall findings indicate that common reference points are often lacking between researchers and archivists.

Abstract This article proposes that the accessibility of and access to health information is linked to health disparities, particularly in the area of African American birth outcomes. Social, cognitive and multiperspective frameworks in information behavior research provide important insights into a better understanding health care consumers and health care providers.

Abstract Purpose: To determine if the electronically supported HANDS plan of care (POC) Method can universally assist a patient's interdependent care team to hold a “Collective mind” or shared understanding of care.“Collective mind” is critically important because it is nearly impossible to ensure the continuity, safety, and quality of care without it.

Abstract In 2006, MIRACLE Project investigators censused library directors at all US academic institutions about their activities planning, pilot testing, and implementing the institutional repositories on their campuses. Out of 446 respondents, 289 (64.8 percent) were from master's and baccalaureate institutions (M&BIs) where few operational institutional repositories (IRs) were in place but where interest in learning more about the M&BI experience pertaining to IRs was high.

ABSTRACT: Since the early days of the World Wide Web, archival institutions have embraced networked technologies to serve a variety of functions, including education and publicity, as well as to communicate information about their holdings and services. Although the degree to which archives utilize the Web varies by type of repository, many archives have at least published a homepage announcing their existence.

Writings on Italian Archival Theory is an annotated bibliography designed to introduce writings on Italian archival experience and knowledge to a wider international audience. Thus, this bibliography contains an abstract of each selected article or book in the original Italian, as well as in French and English. The writings date from 1963 to the present. This time period was selected for two reasons. First, it coincides with the promulgation of the 1963 archival law in Italy.

Recordkeeping practices are part of larger organizational communication patterns that influence what information is recorded, when and where that information is stored and made available, and how that information is recorded. Therefore, understanding of the formal and informal communication and information flow patterns as well as the internal and external constraints and their influence on organizational recordkeeping practices is required to understand the creation and identify the loci of accountability in organizations.

Abstract Institutional repositories (IRs) are increasingly deployed in academic institutions to manage a variety of digital content including educational, research, and archival materials. The proposed benefits of IRs have been identified in the literature including increased knowledge sharing, control over the digital assets of the university, and preservation. All of these benefits involve digital curation because they span the information life-cycle and involve achieving goals that are central to digital curation.

This article reports on the archival implications of the 2006 Census of Institutional Repositories in the United States 1 and follow-up interviews with the developers of institutional repositories in selected colleges and universities. The findings indicate that archivists generally play a quiet but persistent role in institutional repositories, and archival and special collections materials are a major source of content in institutional repositories.

Abstract This study investigates how people construct mental models of new information systems with which they have limited experience. Six different institutional repositories were used as the experimental systems for this lab-based co-discovery experimental study. Sixty subjects (30 pairs) were asked to complete search tasks based on a simulated work situations using an institutional repository.

Abstract This poster presents a study of what is required to plan, implement, maintain, and sustain successful institutional repositories (IRs). This study is part of the MIRACLE (Making Institutional Repositories a Collaborative Learning Environment) Project, which aims to identify the factors contributing to the success of IRs and effective ways of accessing and using repositories. The data for this study were collected through telephone interviews with IR managers and staff members.

Abstract User based evaluation in archives and manuscript repositories lags behind that of libraries and museums. This paper discusses the development and testing of the Archival Metrics Toolkit which is designed to support archivists in conducting user-based evaluations. The current Toolkit includes 5 different questionnaires focused on assessing various archival services in Colleges and Universities as well as instructions for administration and data analysis.
