ABSTRACT: The present paper concerns a very famous episode of the Mahābhārata, “The man in the well” (XI 5). For the first time, such renowned story, which spread into the West through translations from Middle Persian, Arabic and Byzantine Greek, is compared word by word with the beginning of Dante’s Inferno. The striking similarity between both texts leads to various hypotheses, which are carefully investigated in our paper.
