"Following seven years of “creative compliance” with European Union (EU) rules and values, while using cosmetic changes to hide the erosion of democratic institutions, in 2017, certain moves by the Hungarian government more overtly resembled those of authoritarian regimes, unveiling a disturbing direction for the country’s future political development." Nations in Transit is Freedom House’s research project on democracy in the 29 formerly communist countries from Central Europe to Central Asia. The flagship of the project is an annual survey of democratic reform that has been published since 1995, and with the same methodology since 2003. Nations in Transit researchers score the countries in seven categories: National Democratic Governance, Local Democratic Governance, Electoral Process, Independent Media, Civil Society, Judicial Framework and Independence, and Corruption. Category scores are based on a detailed list of questions.

Welcome to Writing and Research! Designed for moderated juniors, this course will lead you through a sequence of writing and research assignments you can use to launch a successful senior project. The course emphasizes the early work of discovering a topic, gaining a working knowledge of that topic, conceiving a discipline-appropriate research question, and conducting focused research driven by your question. Smaller writing and research assignments will prepare you for (or feed into) our three major papers: a literature review, senior project proposal, and research project. Using a distance specifically designed for AntiSpam filters, we developed an image retrieval system that can extract similar images ignoring most noise types. Sometimes, when taking a picture, random pixels change, or different objects appear or disappear from the image. When retrieval is performed, these minor modifications can cause serious problems. Using SID (short for spam image distance) our approach is insensitive to noise and combined to other image characteristics can boost up performance to any image retrieval algorithm.

Greek lexicography and the Septuagint: An example of the lexemes δῶρον, δωρεά, and δωρεάν This article gives an outline of the lemmata δῶρον, δωρεά, and δωρεάν under preparation for The Historical and Theological Lexicon of the Septuagint. The lexemes δῶρον and δωρεά are synonymous up to a point (»gift« that is expected to be repaid in some way) but there is also a significant difference between them. While δῶρον also means »bribe«, »sacrifice«, and »tribute«, the expression δωρεά is used to denote a (royal) »gift of land«, »sponsoring«, and activity »pro bono«, where the collateral meaning is »free of charge, without payment«. This is also the meaning of the adverbial form δωρεάν. The preparation of this material pointed out the importance of papyri and inscriptions for the Greek lexicography. It is especially the case of δωρεά and δωρεάν. This new research also found out that the Liddel – Scott lexicon is incorrect in this respect: two classical places (Herodotus 5.23, Andokides 1.4) are given as the oldest testimonies of the adverbial δωρεάν, while in fact the meaning here is »gift of land« in exchange for services. Then the earliest testimonies of δωρεάν are only the inscriptions and papyri.
