Polished rice usually lacks essential elements. Cultivation for increased yield with high nutritional value is thus a challenge. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to determine the effects of nanofertilizer application on the yield, total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity of rice cv. Ilpum. Results showed that agronomic parameters were significantly enhanced by all combination treatments except for that applied with nanofertilizer only. The full recommended rate of conventional and nanofertilizer (FRR-CF+FRR-NF) enhanced the plant height, chlorophyll content, number of reproductive tillers, panicles, and spikelets. The magnitudes of increase over the FRR-CF were 3.6%, 2.72%, 9.10%, 9.10%, and 15.42%, respectively. Similar results were seen in panicle weight (17.4%), total grain weight (unpolished-17.5%, polished-20.7%), total shoot dry weight (15.3%), and harvest index (2.9%). Half the recommended rate of nanofertilizer enhanced TPC, reducing power and 2, 2’- azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) scavenging activity by 51.67%, 36.28%, and 20.93% respectively over the FRR-CF+FRR-NF treatment. TPC (557.55 mg GAE/100g) was higher compared to some pigmented rice cultivars. ABTS assay revealed that the scavenging activity could reach 97.23%. However, the highest hydroxyl scavenging activity registered on the FRR-CF+FRR-NF treatment (55.11%). The chelating capacity and 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity of the rice extracts did not noticeably differ among treatments. TPC appeared indirectly related to total grain yield and total shoot biomass. Alternatively, a strong positive correlation appeared between TPC and reducing power (94%), as well as ABTS radical scavenging activity (89%). Nanofertilizer application promoted the growth, development, TPC, and antioxidant activity in rice, demonstrating the potential to improve crop production and plant nutrition.

The in vitro antioxidant activity and the total phenolic content (Folin−Ciocalteu method) of three successive extracts of three varieties of Ceratonia siliqua L. leaves (grafted female, spontaneous female, spontaneous male) grown in Morocco were investigated by using in-vitro antioxidant models including 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging assay, reducing power and total antioxidant capacity. The global polyphenols concentration ranged from 0.45 to 2.64 (g/L GAE) in the three categories of the extracts. In each variety, ethyl acetate fraction exhibited the highest antioxidant activity compared to other fractions. Grafted female trees globally showed a higher polyphenols concentration than the spontaneous female and spontaneous male ones. Our results clearly demonstrate that all extracts have antioxidant capacity. Among the categories, the ethyl acetate extracts of carob tree leaves exhibited strong scavenging effect on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) than the diethyl ether and dichloromethane extracts. Carob leaf extracts contain high amounts of polyphenols with strong antiradical, antioxidant capacity and reducing properties which might constitute an important source of natural antioxidants.

Polyphenols represent a group of chemical substances common in plants, structurally characterized by the presence of one or more phenol units. Polyphenols are the most abundant antioxidants in human diets and the largest and best studied class of polyphenols is flavonoids, which include several thousand compounds. Numerous studies confirm that they exert a protective action on human health and are key components of a healthy and balanced diet. Epidemiological studies correlate flavonoid intake with a reduced incidence of chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer. The involvement of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the etiology of these degenerative conditions has suggested that phytochemicals showing antioxidant activity may contribute to the prevention of these pathologies. The present review deals with phenolic compounds in plants and reports on recent studies. Moreover, the present work includes information on the relationships between the consumption of these compounds, via feeding, and risk of disease occurrence, i.e. the effect on human health. Results obtained on herbs, essential oils, from plants grown in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions, were also reported.

Fresh fruits convenient source of natural phenols and antioxidants which are healthy for human. At present many
marketed fruit juices claims to be salubrious also full of phenols and antioxidants. In this study enlighten on
investigation of phenols and antioxidant. Five mixed fruits juices were collected from Bangladeshi market for
investigation. For the phenolic contents determination modified Folin–Ciocalteu and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl
(DPPH) modified method for antioxidant analysis was applied. The value of phenolic content was S1 (43.88±0.51),
S2 (54.29±0.55), S3 (79.97±1.15), S4 (69.97±1.02) and S5 (57.70±0.78) respectively. On basis of the IC50value was
S1 (81.59±1.20), S2 (49.91±0.85), S3 (28.75±0.76), S4 (24.44±0.67) and S5 (61.075±0.95) respectively. This study
signifies the determination of phenolic contents and antioxidants presence in mixed fruit juices with substantial
activeness.

Background and Objectives: Tahini (sesame paste) is a condiment made from sesame seeds. Given the possible high antioxidant activity and polyphenol content of sesame seeds, we aimed to measure the total antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of different tahini brands in Iran's market. Methods: In this study, 111 tahini samples from 37 commercial brands (three samples from each brand) were purchased from the Iran's market. The ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) method was used to measure the total antioxidant activity in each sample. Total phenolic content was measured by the Folin-Ciocalteu method. Results: The results showed that Mino-dates (119.93 ± 0.159 µmol/mL), Trang-Chocolate (56.30 ± 0.056 µmol/mL), Barsam-coffee (45.13 ± 0.094 µmol/mL) and Chocolate-barsam (53.23 ± 0.112 µmol/mL) had significantly higher antioxidant activity compared to other brands (p<0.001). Moreover, Mino-dates (2057.33 ± 0.094 µmol/mL), Barsam-coffee (805.51 ± 0.041 µmol/mL), Chocolate-barsam (807.42 ± 0.095 µmol/mL) and Trang-Chocolate (685.75 ± 0.086 µmol/mL) contained higher level of phenolic compounds compared to other brands (p< 0.001). Conclusion: This study is among the first to assess total antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of different tahini brands in Iran. Our results indicate that tahini brands with a higher phenolic content also have higher antioxidant activity. It can be concluded that tahini may be used as rich source of antioxidant compounds in people's routine diet.
