Air Force Reserve Directors of Psychological Health (DPH) are the Wing’s primary subject matter expert on mental health as a licensed healthcare provider. DPH ensure the Reserve community has access to a medical perspective during consultation to inform decisions. Servicemembers and their families are able to access the appropriate level of care to meet emotional and behavior concerns.
DPH meet the quality standards set forth by Defense Health Agency to remain proficient and current in the assessment and treatment of mental health. DPH are privileged healthcare providers within the Military Treatment Facility and Reserve medical Unit. As civilians they report directly to the Wing Commander to ensure rapid response to emergent events and reduce gaps in healthcare systems. Congress mandated the DPH positions in 2012 following a determination that the existing systems would remain insufficient to meet the needs of the military.
DPH activities are focused on consultation, assessment and enhanced referral coordination as service members and their families navigate the complex system of supports including medical treatment and non-medical services in and out of the military. They operate with medical confidentiality and most interactions are protected by the Privacy Act of 1974.
AFR DPH are full time civilians and may be accessed during the Unit Training Assembly (UTA) and/or during the week. DPH are available at the Wing and by telephone. DPH use their unique skills and expertise to ensure service members and their families are both ready and resilient.
