Robbie Fletcher, Ed.D.
The Kentucky Board of Education named Robbie Fletcher, Ed.D., as commissioner of education on March 21, 2024. He began the role July 1, 2024, following approval from the Kentucky Senate.
Fletcher previously served as superintendent of Lawrence County Schools, where he expanded dual credit opportunities for high school students and bolstered career and technical education opportunities for the district. Lawrence County also was involved in the Kentucky Innovative Learning Network (KY ILN) and Local Laboratories of Learning (L3) during his decade-long tenure as superintendent.
Fletcher brings nearly 30 years of education experience into the role of education commissioner. He has served as chair of the Appalachia Regional Advisory Committee, which was created by the U.S. Department of Education, and the Local Superintendents Advisory Council. He also participated in several statewide programs, councils and initiatives, including the Kentucky United We Learn Council, the Superintendents Advisory Council and the School Funding Task Force created by the Kentucky General Assembly.
Fletcher, who grew up in Martin County, earned a bachelor's degree at Morehead State University and a master's degree from the University of Kentucky. He returned to Morehead State, where he earned his doctorate degree and superintendent certification.
Fletcher started his career in 1996 as a math teacher in Williamstown Independent. He held teaching posts in Bourbon County and Martin County schools before transitioning into middle and high school principal roles in Martin County. He was named the Bourbon County Teacher of the Year in 1999, the Wal-Mart Regional Teacher of the Year in Central Kentucky in 2000, and the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America Kentucky Principal of the Year in 2011.
Fletcher and his wife, Melissa, have three children.
