Products: Algorithm Working Group

The Algorithm Working Group (AWG), in conjunction with the GOES-R Series risk reduction effort, was created to develop, test, demonstrate, validate, and provide algorithms for end-to-end GOES-R Series ground system capabilities and to provide sustained life cycle validation and product enhancements.

AWG End-to-End Capabilities:

  • Instrument trade studies
  • Proxy dataset development
  • Algorithm development and testing
  • Product demonstration systems
  • Development of calibration/validation tools
  • Integrated calibration/validation enterprise system
  • Sustained radiance and product validation
  • Algorithm and application improvements
  • User readiness and education

Algorithm Development Schedule:

  • PHASE I (80% baseline level 2 products): Complete in 2009
  • PHASE II (100% baseline level-2 products and 80% future capability level-2 products): Complete in 2010
  • PHASE III (100% future capability level-2 products): Complete in 2011

Product application teams: Plan and execute the activities to assess, select, develop, validate, and deliver level-2 product algorithms

  • Imagery
  • Soundings
  • Winds
  • Clouds
  • Aviation
  • Hydrology
  • Land surface
  • Cryosphere
  • Radiation budget
  • Lightning
  • Space environment
  • SST and ocean dynamics
  • Aerosols/air quality/atmospheric chemistry
  • Proxy data
  • Cal/val (sensor)
  • Algorithm integration

Product development teams: Code, host, and test candidate level-2 product algorithms in a scalable operational demonstration environment, and develop validation tools.

Proxy teams: Responsible for the development of high-quality GOES-R instrument-simulated and proxy data sets for GOES-R product algorithm development, testing, and validation.

AWG integration team: Establishes requirements, standards, infrastructure, architecture, integrates software from the product development teams, and prepares deliveries to the ground system.
