Be Prepared to Prevent, Protect and Respond

The r.24 Lifeguarding program prepares lifeguards to prevent, protect and respond to aquatic emergencies. Our nationally accepted curriculum has been refreshed with modernized tools and includes more active hands-on learning. This revitalized program aligns with the most current scientific insights and best practices, validated by the American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council.

Taking a Lifeguarding & Water Safety Class

You can sign up for a wide range of American Red Cross lifeguarding and water safety courses year-round from trained professionals who can help you gain the skills and confidence necessary for providing care and instruction when it's needed most. Courses available include lifeguarding, Water Safety Instructor™ training, Lifeguarding Instructor training, safety training for swim coaches and more. Check the Find a Course tool or contact your local aquatic facility for details and get the training you need for the job you want.

Lifeguard & Water Safety Preparation

Red Cross lifeguarding students must be at least 15 years old by the last day of class and pass a swimming skills test. Once students are enrolled, they'll receive the latest science-based training from experienced instructors and develop skills they'll use for a lifetime. Flexible training courses are available in person or via blended learning, which combines online coursework with in-person skills sessions. In addition to full courses, lifeguarding review courses (abbreviated recertification courses) are also available for those who hold current lifeguarding certifications or certification expired by no more than 30 days. Most training supplies or manuals needed to teach the courses can easily be found on the Red Cross Store.

What to Expect from Lifeguarding & Water Safety Training

Your facility will benefit from our premier lifeguarding safety programs, which not only include training for a variety of water environments but also third-party assessment of lifeguarding operations. Courses are designed and taught by industry-leading professionals who understand how to prevent and manage emergencies in and around the water.
