Course Curriculum for the Higher Specialty

Certificate in Medicine/ Otolaryngology


The Higher Specialty Certificate in Medicine/Otolaryngology is awarded
by the Faculty of Graduate Studies at Jordan University of Science and
Technology (JUST) upon the fulfillment of the following requirements:
1. Compliance with the JUST regulations for Higher Specialty in
Medicine approved by the Deans' Council (No. 829/2006) dated
5/12/2006.
2. Successful completion of a 5-year academic and training program as
follows:

* Each year is registered as 12 credit hours for the purpose of registration
fees only.
3-This academic plan applies to all students accepted into the program as
of 1/1/2005.
The components of the plan
A five-year training program sets off, for the first year, in the Department
of General Surgery and the remaining four years in the ENT and head
and neck surgery department. The training period of the first year may be
distributed on the remaining four years but the training in the General
Surgery Department should not be less than six months in the first year
according to regulation issued by Jordanian Medical Council.

The daily program during residency years


Daily work starts at 8:00 am 5:00 pm except on weekends and holidays.
Scientific activities include the following:
1- Morning report and emergency cases discussion.
2- Morning rounds.
3- Three seminars weekly.
4- Discussion and presentation pertaining to extreme cases once
weekly.
5- Half a day every week is devoted for reviewing up-to-date
periodicals and scientific extra-activities, like video conferences...
6- Training will be in the outpatient clinic and floor as well as in the
minor and major operating rooms.
7- Trainees will participate in overnight duties after gaining some
practical experience during the first year.
8- Residents should document their scientific and surgical activities in
their Logbooks throughout the training years. Documentation
should be in an organized manner in terms of dates and signature of
the supervising consultant. These Logbooks should always be
ready if requested.
The detailed requirements of the academic program:
Year 1: MED 701 B First Year Training in General Surgery
First-year training is held in the General Surgery Departments and is
distributed as follows:
Five months in General Surgery Department.
Two months in Accidents and Emergency Department.
Two months in Plastic Surgery and Burns Department.
Two months in Neurosurgery Department.
During this year, the trainees are expected to become familiar with the
following:
Academic aspects:
All trainees are expected to:
1- Study the anatomy and physiology of the head, neck and chest.
2- Obtain knowledge of the major principles of general surgery.
3- Obtain knowledge of surgical diseases and accidents.
4- Focus on the following topics:
Anatomy &embryology of the head, neck and thorax.
Physiology of deglutition and respiration.

Physiology of Fluid and electrolytes.


Acid-base balance
Blood transfusion.
Coagulation and coagulopathy. Shock.
Parenteral Nutrition.
Thromboembolism.
Body reaction to trauma.
Infection &antibiotics.
Wound healing.
Incision, flaps and graft.
Surgical sterilization and antiseptics.
Burns
Care of terminally ill patients
Immunology and Oncology.
Organs failure.
Pre-operative assessment, post-operative care of surgical
patients.

Practical aspects:
All trainees are expected to:
1- Know how to admit patients, take their medical history, conduct
preliminary examination, and order and evaluate the relevant lab
results.
2- Manage general surgery patients professionally.
3- Know how to deal with surgical and emergency cases efficiently.
4- Know how to deal with Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients.
5- Know how to perform minor surgical cases and some emergency
operations efficiently.
6- Know the principles of plastic surgery and neuro-surgery.
Year 2: MED 702 L Second Year Training in Otolaryngology.
Academic aspects :
All trainees are expected to:
1- Take the clinical research methodology course (P.H 709) as three
credit hours and to pass the course with a minimum score of 70%.
2- Have a detailed knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the
head and neck in general and of the ear, nose and throat in particular
3- Have good knowledge of related microbiology, methods of
anesthesia for head and neck surgery, related pharmacology and
therapeutics with special emphasis on chemotherapy, radiation therapy
and the role of lasers in the treatment of ENT and head and neck
diseases

4- Become familiar with the basics of audiology.


5- Become familiar with ENT and head and neck surgery
emergencies.
6- Become familiar with common diseases in ENT and head and neck
surgery.
Practical aspects:
All trainees are expected to:
1- Efficiently obtain history of present illness and present patients and
be familiar with the necessary basic laboratory investigations
2- Manage emergency cases efficiently
3- Be able to perform some assessment of hearing using simple
audiology methods
4- Prepare patients for surgery and to take care of patients
postoperatively
5- Perform the following procedures:

Cut-wound repair.
Drainage of septal hematoma and abscess.
Drainage of auricular hematoma and abscess.
Adenoidectomy.
Tonsillectomy.
Myringotomy with/without grommets insertion.
External reduction of fractured nasal bones.
Removal of foreign body from the nose and throat.
Ear syringing.
Antral washout.
Anterior and posterior nasal packing to control epistaxis.
Cautery of the nose.
Repair of bifid ear lobule.
Removal of cysts and other skin masses in the head and
neck.
Incision and drainage of peritonsillar abscess.

Year 3: MED 703 L Third Year Training in Otolaryngology


Academic aspects:
All trainees are expected to study, in more details, various diseases
related to the head and neck with emphasis on diseases of the ear, nose
and throat.

Practical aspects:
All trainees are expected to:
1- Be able to run the outpatient specialty clinic efficiently under the
supervision of the specialist.
2- Start performing major operations on the ear such as mastoid
surgery.
3- Assist in data collection for the purposes of scientific research.
4- Start a research project under the supervision of one of the
academic staff in the department.
5- Be able to perform the following procedures:

Panendoscopy rigid and flexible


Septoplasty.
Submucous resection.
Submucous diathermy.
Partial turbinectomy.
Nasal polypectomy.
Removal of nasal adhesions.
Tracheostomy.
Removal of soft tissue masses from the head and neck.
Removal of pharyngeal and laryngeal benign masses.
Removal of masses from the external ear.
Incision and drainage of neck abscesses.
Internal reduction of fractured nasal bones.
Assisting in the major operations.

Year 4: MED 704 L Fourth year Training in Otolaryngology


Academic aspects:
All trainees are expected to have:
1- A detailed study of all otolaryngology and head and neck diseases.
2- A detailed study of otolaryngology and head and neck literatures
and journals.

Practical aspects:
All trainees are expected to:
1- Be able to deal with otolaryngology and head and neck patients
efficiently.
2- Participate in the teaching process of undergraduate students and
junior residents.
3- Be able to do the following operations (in addition to the previous
surgeries):

Septorhinoplasty.
External ethmoidectomy.
Ligation of anterior and posterior ethmoid arteries
Caldwell - Luc operation.
Trephine of frontal sinus.
Foreign body removal from aero digestive tracts.
Antrostomies, middle and inferior meatuses.
Repair of oroantral fistulas.
Cortical mastoidectomy.
Meatoplasty.
Removal of exsostosis and osteomas from ear canal.
Modified mastoidectomy.
Myringoplasty.
Tympanotomy.
Microlaryngoscopy and removal of laryngeal masses.
Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty.
Teflon injection of vocal cords.
Thyroplasty.
Laser removal of pharyngeal and laryngeal masses.
Hypo pharyngeal diverticuloectomy.
Submandibulr gland excision.
Pinnaplasty.

Year 5: MED 705 L Fifth year Training in Otolaryngology


Academic aspects:
All trainees are expected to have:
1- A detailed study of all otolaryngology and head and neck diseases.
2- A detailed study of otolaryngology and head and neck literatures
and journals.
3- Knowledge of how to evaluate medical literatures.
Practical aspects:
All trainees are expected to:
1- Be able to deal with otolaryngology and head and neck patients
efficiently.
2- Participate effectively in teaching process of undergraduate students
and junior residents.
3- Participate in writing two papers.
4- Be able to do the following operations (in addition to the previous
surgeries):

Lateral rhinotomy.
Maxillectony.
Osteoplastic operation on the frontal sinus.
All mastoidectomies.
Stapedectomy.
Facial nerve exploration and grafting.
Neck dissection.
Laryngectomy.
Endoscopic sinus surgery.
Nasal CSF repair.
Superficial parotidectomy.
Subtotal petrosectomy.
Removal of glomus jugulage and tympanicum tumors.
Removal of acoustic neuroma.
Choanal atresia repair.
Cochlear Implantation
