Tools:
 Mallet:

It is used
1. To drive chisels (for striking wooden handles).
2. To avoid indentation.

 Rebate plane/rabbet plane:

It is used
• For cutting rebates in wood.

 Rebate planes are intended for long grain cutting & generally are setup to
remove large amount of material quickly.
It was in use in England as early as 11th century.
 Claw Hammer:

It is used
1. To drive & pull out nails.
2. Its parts are as shown in figure.

 Cross Pin Hammer:

It is called cross pin hammer its pin is perpendicular to hammer


Similarly,
a. Straight line hammer
b. Ball head hammer
Are also available.
 Hand hammer: Hammers having weight from 4ounces to 3pounds.
 Sledge hammers: Hammers having weight upto 20 pounds
 Pincers/pair of pincers:

A pincer is a hand tool used where mechanical advantage is required to pinch, cut
or pull an object.
In carpentry shop, it is frequently used to cut or draw the nails from wood.

 Smooth plane/smoothing plane:

It is used for
 Planning and finishing the surfaces.
 Its finish is far superior than finishing by sand papers and scrapers.

 jack plane/jointer:

It is used for making

2. smoothing large areas
3. sizing of wood

 They are about 15 inches long.

 Spring divider:
 dividers are the instruments
used for
1. Measuring distances between
two points.
2. Transferring and comparing
measurements directly from
A rule.
3. Scribing an arc, radius or circle.

 Crosscut saw (without saw set):

It is a tool specially designed for cutting purposes.


It is used where cutting has to be of
Crosscut type.
 A crosscut is the cutting perpendicular to the
fibers.
 Its teeth are so designed to act like a knife edge.

 Rip saw:
It is a tool specially designed for cutting purposes.
It is used where cutting has to be of Rip type.
 A rip cut is the cutting parallel to the direction of fibers.
 Its teeth are so designed to act like a chisel.

 Marking gauge:

It is used to Mark out lines for cutting or


other operations.

 The purpose of the gauge is to scribe a


line parallel to a reference edge or surface.
