such as fnding accommodation, opening a bank account,

This handbook is designed to help
you settle into life at LSBU and to
life in the UK and London.
The International Ofce was probably your frst contact with the
university. We are here to help you choose your course and guide
your through the admissions process, but we are also here to help
you settle in and provide support during your studies. This may be
your frst time in the UK or you may be new to London or University
life so this booklet aims to give you advice on some of the things
you may need to do while you are studying, such as how to register
with a doctor (GP), how to open a bank account, and how to extend

Pre-arrival Information
3
Here are some guidelines to give you an idea of what
you need to do before you leave your home country
to start your studies at LSBU:
Check your email regularly
It is important for you to check the email address
which you provided when applying regularly. You
will be sent important information by the University
with regards to your enrolment, orientation and
accommodation (if applicable). You will be asked to
complete an online pre-enrolment form and book a
slot for enrolment when you arrive.
Key arrival dates
This could depend on how quickly your visa is issued
to you but here are some dates that you should be
aware of:
13 September 2013 - Enrolment
16 - 20 September 2013 - Faculty Orientation
19 - 21 September 2013 - International Orientation
23 September 2013 - Semester One begins
11 October 2013 -Latest date for enrolment
Packing for the UK
If you are fying to the UK from overseas, please be
aware that baggage allowances difer depending on
the airline. Please check with your airline to fnd out
the weight and number of pieces of baggage you are
allocated to avoid costly charges.
Here are some suggestions about what you might
want to bring with you:
Include a fresh change of clothes and toiletries in
your hand luggage in case your luggage is delayed
in transit.
Electrical adapter for any electric items you bring -
the UK uses a voltage of 240V.
The weather in the UK can be unpredictable. The
temperature in winter averages at 1C and reaches
20C in summer. Appropriate clothing can be
bought easily here, however it is advisable to bring
enough clothes to ensure you will be comfortable
given the changing climate.
If you are staying in University accommodation
then please remember that bed linen, towels,
cooking utensils, crockery or cutlery are not
provided in your room. These can be bought easily
from shops local to the University or ordered
online through a company called
www.click2campus.com
See the section on Accommodation on page 12 for
more details.
Photographs and reminders of home to display in
your room.
It might be useful to bring a dictionary and
reference materials in your own language.
However, do not bring too many books as this will
make your luggage very heavy.
Documents for enrolment see page 6.
Insurance
It is essential that you take out insurance when
coming to the UK to cover yourself for these possible
situations:
Lost baggage while travelling
Theft or robbery of personal possessions items
might be stolen from your room or taken from you
when are outside
Serious accident or illness of a close relative you
may need to pay for an emergency fight home
Personal illness or accidents please note that you
do not require medical insurance for treatment
in the UK if you are enrolling on a course which
is longer than 6 months. See page 13 for more
information.
If you are in University Halls of Residence you
will be provided with a basic level of possessions
insurance cover at no additional cost to you. This
insurance has been negotiated with Endsleigh
Insurance Services as part of a block policy
agreement. Please note that laptops are not
covered.
You may wish to add to the level of cover provided
by contacting Endsleigh on 0800 028 3571 or via
their website: www.endsleigh.co.uk
Applying for entry clearance to come
to the UK
If your course lasts more than six months then you
will probably need to apply for a student visa under
the Tier 4 (General) category of the points-based
system. For more information about applying for
your visa and other immigration advice please see
page 8.

If you would like to make your own travel
arrangements to the University, LSBU is very
accessible from both Heathrow and Gatwick airports.
London Heathrow Airport to LSBU
Heathrow Airport is very large and has fve terminals.
There are several routes from Heathrow to LSBU
campus due to the Universitys accessible location in
Elephant and Castle.
London Underground (Tube)
www.heathrowairport.com/transport-and-
directions/underground
The Piccadilly Line between Heathrow Airport and
Central London is one of the cheapest options.
Heathrow Airport has three London Underground
stations which are accessible from all 5 terminals.
A single fare will cost approximately 5 and can
be bought from ticket ofces or machines at the
Underground station.
To get to Elephant and Castle underground station,
you will need to change trains. You can change at
Piccadilly Circus station and take the Bakerloo line,
or at Leicester Square station and take the Northern
line. The journey should take about an hour. Further
information is available at www.tf.gov.uk
Once at Elephant and Castle underground station
please follow the signs to London South Bank
University for the nearest exit to the campus.
Train: Heathrow Express
www.heathrowairport.com/transport-and-
directions/trains/heathrow-express
You can take the Heathrow Express train between
Heathrow and Paddington station. This is a faster
option but is more expensive with tickets costing
around 20. Trains run every 15 minutes and the
journey takes approximately 15 minutes.
On arrival at Paddington station you will need to
change and take the London Underground. The
Bakerloo line (Southbound) will take you directly to
Elephant and Castle underground station.
Train: Heathrow Connect
www.heathrowairport.com/transport-and-
directions/trains/heathrow-connect
You can take the Heathrow Connect train between
Heathrow and Paddington station. The journey takes
around 25 minutes and trains run every 30 minutes.
A single fare between the airport and Paddington
costs 9.50. Tickets must be bought prior to boarding
the train to avoid a penalty fare.
Coach: National Express
Coaches run from Heathrow Airport (Terminals 1
and 3) directly to London Victoria Coach station
approximately every 30 minutes. The journey
should take around 1 hour. If you are travelling from
Terminals 4 and 5 you will need to change coaches
at Terminal 1 and 3 to travel onward from there. The
journey time varies from 2 to 3 hours and ticket
prices vary depending on your Terminal.
Once at London Victoria Coach station you will
need to take the London Underground to Elephant
and Castle. You can take the Circle or District line
(Eastbound) to Embankment station, and change
to the Bakerloo line (Southbound) to Elephant and
Castle underground station.
Taxi
Taxis ranks can be found outside all Heathrow
terminals. They can also be booked from the taxi
information desks in the arrivals halls of each
terminal. Taxis in London can be expensive, so it is
advisable to ask the driver for an estimated charge
before you start your journey. Costs usually start
from 60.
London Gatwick Airport to LSBU
Gatwick Airport has two terminals North and
South. Although there is no London Underground
station at the airport, there are still a few travel
options available.
Train: Gatwick Express
Gatwick Express is a train that runs between
London Gatwick Airport and London Victoria
station in Central London. The railway station is
located at the South Terminal and is also just a
few minutes from the North Terminal by a free
shuttle. You can buy tickets at the station or at the
rail information desks located in arrivals at both
terminals. Trains depart every 15 minutes and the
journey takes approximately 30 minutes. Tickets cost
approximately 20 and can also be bought online
prior to your arrival at www.gatwickexpress.com.
Train: First Capital Connect
First Capital Connect runs direct trains from
Gatwick Airport to London Bridge. The journey takes
approximately 30 minutes and tickets should cost
approximately 15. From London Bridge you will
need to take the London Underground Northern
Line (Southbound) direct to Elephant and Castle
Underground station.
Taxi
There is a taxi rank located outside the main
terminal at Gatwick Airport where you can queue for
a black taxi. Taxis in London can be rather expensive,
so it is advisable to ask the driver for an estimated
charge before you start your journey. Costs usually
start from 70.
Coach: National Express
Coaches run from Gatwick North and South
Terminals to London Victoria Coach station once an
hour. The journey should take approximately 1 hour
30 minutes and ticket prices depend on your journey.
Once at London Victoria Coach station you will
need to take the London Underground to Elephant
and Castle. You can take the Circle or District line
(Eastbound) to Embankment station, and change
to the Bakerloo line (Southbound) to Elephant and
Castle underground station.
All four of London South Bank Universitys Halls
of Residence are within walking distance of the
university campus.
If you expect to arrive outside normal ofce
hours and then plan to travel to your University
accommodation make sure the Accommodation
Ofce are aware of your arrival time. See page 12 for

Who can ofer immigration advice?
The immigration system is often subject to change
and therefore it is important that any immigration
advice you seek is up-to-date. Although you may
want to ask family and friends for immigration
advice, please remember that immigration rules are
very complex and are likely to apply diferently to
diferent people. We advise you to seek expert advice
from the following sources:
International Ofce
The International Student Advice team can ofer up-
to-date immigration advice to current students. For
more information on the services provided and the
relevant contact details please see page 10.
Due to regular changes in the immigration rules, the
International Ofce is the only place in University
allowed to give immigration advice to students.
Staf in your Faculty or other areas of the University
cannot provide any advice related to immigration.
External advice
If you have a query that is beyond the expertise
of the International Student Advice team you can
seek advice from an immigration solicitor. The
International Student Advice team can advise on
how to fnd a regulated immigration adviser.
Further information on immigration and other topics
relevant for international students may be found
on the UK Council for International Student Afairs
(UKCISA) website: www.ukcisa.org.uk/

Staying at Home
Living with relatives can often be the cheapest option
as it usually means no deposits, no rent, and no bills
(water, gas, electricity, and internet). However, it can
also mean long journeys to and from campus, higher
costs in transportation, and less independence. It
is left to the individual to calculate what is most
important.
Renting with a Private Landlord/Estate Agent
Renting privately can be pretty expensive in London,
although you can always try to fnd someone to
share with you. When you are a private tenant you
are expected to pay/share bills (gas, electricity, water,
TV license, phone/internet, and, of course, rent).
Students are exempt from paying council tax so make
sure you get a certifcate from your faculty to provide
to your local council.
The money you will usually need to rent privately is:
Deposit (Usually ranging from 2 6 weeks rent)
First months rent upfront
Agency fees, inventory fees and reference fees (if
renting from an estate agent)
The Accommodation Ofce will help and support you
in fnding private accommodation

Staying at LSBU Halls of Residence
When staying at the Halls of residence all you have
to pay is your TV licence and your rent. You are
free to come and go as you please, you can receive
visitors, theres access to free internet, and no travel
costs you can walk to university in no more than
10 minutes. Plus, you have the chance to meet fellow
university colleagues. The Halls of Residence are safe
and good value for money. For more details about

The NHS (National Health Service)
The NHS is the UKs state health service which
provides treatment for UK residents through a wide
range of health care services. Some services are free,
and some you will have to pay for. You qualify for
NHS treatment if your course will last six months or
more. If so, you are entitled to the same treatment
as an ordinary resident of the UK. Your spouse or
children with you in the UK will also be entitled to
NHS treatment. If your course is under six months
then you are only entitled to limited free NHS
treatment, e.g. treatment given in a NHS Accident
and Emergency department. You will have to pay for
other types of treatment so we would advise you to
take out medical insurance.
It is important that you register with a doctors(also
known as a general practionioner or GP) surgery
before you get ill. GPs have the right to refuse you
as a NHS patient if you do not show the appropriate
evidence that you are eligible for free treatment.
Under the NHS, consultations with doctors are free,
but if you need any medication you will be given a
prescription which authorises a pharmacist to give
you a particular medicine. A standard charge of
approximately 7.85 will be made for each item on
your prescription.

How to Register with a GP
You will need some documents in order to register
with your GP:
Enrolment letter confrming you are enrolled at
LSBU. You can request this from your Faculty Ofce.
Completed patient form
Your passport
Proof of address (you can use your enrolment
letter for this)
If you have any preferences about who sees
you (male, female or someone who speaks your
language) then you mention this when registering.

Academic calendar 2013/14
16
The academic year has traditionally been organised
into three terms and a small number of programmes
at LSBU are organised in this way. Most programmes,
however, are organised by semesters. The academic
year incorporates two semesters, each lasting 15
weeks.
Not all events for this academic year have been
fnalised. Some will be added in the near future.
