Christopher Trevino Mrs. Tyree December 4, 2013 English III Period 3 John Proctor a Fallen Hero John Proctor is the tragic hero in the novel The Crucible. John is a respected man in the town of Salem, but becomes the enemy of the town when he is accused of signing with the devil himself. John sacrificed himself to show he would rather die than live a lie to save his own life. John Proctor a farmer, father, and well respected man is living his life just like the others of Salem. John wants to forget the affair he committed with Abigail for he loves his wife and feels his wife will not let go of the truth. Furthermore, John feels uneasy when he sees Abigail, for she still loves him and wants John to be in a relationship with her. John becomes angry when Abigail mocks him for bending to the will of his cold, sniveling wife. (Act 1). John has heard of the accusations of witchcraft in Salem. John also learns that Mary Warren has gone to the court when she was told by Elizabeth to stay home. Elizabeth wants John to testify against Abigail but John tells her Abigail told him she was not committing witchcraft when they were alone together. Elizabeth begins to lose faith in John when she hears they were alone together, but John quickly silences her and commands to stop judging him. Reverend Hale shows up to the Proctors house and tests the Proctors of their Christian nature. Proctor fails the Ten Commandments by forgetting Adultery which was the sin he committed. Elizabeth is taken away for accusations of witchcraft, in his efforts; John could not prevent his wife being taken. Johns downfall has now begun at this point of the story.

John goes to court to testify to save his wife, but could not get anyone to believe him until John tells the truth of his sin with Abigail. Everyone is taken back by the news and questions Abigail but she evades it as best as she can. Elizabeth is called to tell why Abigail was dismissed from their home. Elizabeth does not know what to say and says John did not have an affair and she is sent away as a liar. John has lost, he cannot have anyone believe him and he gives up by yelling GOD IS DEAD! With those words John has gotten himself in deeper trouble. John is then given a choice, he can confess and live, or keep fighting and die. He chooses to live and signs the confession but then cannot bring himself to return it and rips it knowing what he has done. John went to the rope that same day and died to show sacrifice. John died for his salvation for he would rather die than live a lie. He also confessed his sins and was willing to die to show the right way for others. John Proctors legacy may live on if the accused can find it in their hearts to stay true to themselves and die for true salvation.
