iPads in the Lower
Elementary Classroom PCW 2014 Alyssa Bornheimer + Stand Up/Sit Down Stand up when one of the following applies to you. Sit down if one of the following does not apply to you. I ate breakfast this morning I have laughed at least once today I have learned something new at the PCW Conference 2014 I am ready to have fun thinking about ways to use (iPad) technology in my classroom instruction! I have a smartphone I have a classroom computer for student use I have used a cloud storage space like Dropbox, Google Drive, Box.com or iCloud I have one mobile device available in my classroom I have more than one mobile device available in my classroom I share a cart (or something similar) in my school with devices enough for each child to use when its in my room I have one device for each student in my classroom all day, everyday (1 to 1) I have used technology (laptops, computers, tablets, iPads) with students + I was/I am I was 2 nd grade teacher at St. Peters Lutheran School in Eastpointe, MI It was here I 1 st had access to technology- MIMIO Interactive technology in my 1 st year of teaching I was 2 nd grade teacher at St. Matthew Lutheran School in Walled Lake, MI Cart for shared iPad usage I wrote for and received MACUL Grant for small group iPad usage I am one of the Kdg-4 th Grade resource teachers at Emmanuel-St. Michael Lutheran School in Fort Wayne, IN I am a teacher at I-Can After School Learning program run by Lutheran Special Education Ministries for a low income-at risk neighborhood charter school + I was I was Not always open to technology I dont need an iPad Ill never have a Twitter account! Dropbox is to confusing. I dont need it Not sure how iPads were anything but game devices
+ I am I am Not sure how I taught without iPads A Twitter user- its where most of my seed ideas begin Lost without Dropbox. Not sure where my jump/thumb drive is anymore I am Constantly trying new apps Frustrated when technology doesnt work how it should Convinced we have to teach students to be creative and responsible digital producers + A Digital Producer is.. One who uses technology to create things, possibly to demonstrate their learning or convey information in a creative manner The opposite of a Digital Consumer- one who watches videos, plays games etc. using devices Our students will consume enough technology on their own- we must teach them to use technology productively + Why? The Theory Motivation! Authentic learning Studies have found that authentic, engaging activities that students can connect to their own lives are more likely to be successful in motivating and, ultimately, progressing learning for students When students are creating digital products, they take pride in and ownership of the outcome. When the audience is beyond themselves or their teacher, they work hard + Where to begin Im not against game playing using devices- but students will do that on their own. Students need to know that devices arent just game playing devices. The devices have so much creative and useful potential! + Where to begin Youll need a way to access material off your iPad(s). An app like Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, or iCloud to which your content will save for access on any computer or device. Apps that allow creation- photo or video taking/editing Apps that save to the camera roll or upload to YouTube or some other manner of sharing Apps that allow for digital material to be re-made, transformed or Taken to the next level + Setting Up Accessing material off devices is key!!! Install DropBox on devices Sign in and enable camera upload Install DropBox on classroom computer and sign in to the account the devices are connected to Or if you already use a could storage, share a folder between accounts Create a classroom YouTube account Videos are easily stored and shared from YouTube Videos can be uploaded as Private so only you give the address to that video
+ Classroom Website Great Place for sharing student projects and works Easily customizable weebly.com + Classroom Must-Do Think about how youll manage student device usage- assigned a numbered iPad (using background pictures with numbers) Explore/ Sandbox time before instructional use Keep is simple- Stick with a few of the best, favorite or functional apps Dont expect perfection in student work Plan for failure- tech WILL fail- Use it as a learning opportunity for students + Whole Class Producing: Aurasma Augmented Reality Vocabulary Wall Short videos for a vocabulary word Students add an image to the vocabulary card Create an overlay with the video A link that gives a great explanation of Aurasma and a How to http://www.kleinspiration.com/2013/05/using-augmented-reality-via- aurasma-in.html

Print a QR Code and put it on the book for others to listen to their recording! Students narrate their book reports, history projects etc. Print the QR Code and place it next to the physical project Record weekly memory work as a memory work portfolio + App-Smashing Make a Picture Save to Camera Roll Use Picture Save to Camera Roll Final Product
