Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 4. USING DEVELOPMENTALLY EFFECTIVE APPROACHES
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that teaching and learning with young
children is a complex enterprise, and its details vary depending on childrens ages, characteristics, and the
settings within which teaching and learning occur. They a) understand and use positive relationships and
supportive interactions as the foundation for their work with young children and families. Candidates b, c)
know, understand, and use a wide array of developmentally appropriate approaches, instructional strategies,
and tools to connect with children and families and d) positively influence each childs development and
learning. (NAEYC, 2010)
Brief Description of Evidence:
During the summer semester of 2014 in ECED 235 Preschool Practicum I completed a Behavior
Guidance assignment. The parameters of this assignment were to identify with at least two theorists that
influenced my personal beliefs on behavior guidance. Then I had to discuss my personal feelings on behavior
guidance and goals for myself, children and families regarding behavior guidance. Finally I had to share
multiple strategies that I found have worked in the past and strategies that I think would work or that I like.
Analysis of What I Learned:
Through completion of this assignment I learned that teaching and learning with young children is a
complex enterprise that entails using positive relationships and supportive interactions with children and
families. I learned that planning for behavior guidance is based a lot on personal opinion, but should also be
based on at least one theorist in early childhood development in order to be developmentally effective and
appropriate. I also learned how different techniques can be combined in order to create unique behavior
guidance strategies and that using a wide array of developmentally appropriate approaches helps connect
with children and families.
How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:
My completion of this assignment opened my eyes to how developing a behavior guidance plan for a
child requires one to take into consideration childrens ages, characteristics, and the settings within which
teaching and learning occur. Creating a personalized behavior guidance plan involves the educator to
incorporate positive relationships and supportive interactions as the foundation for their work with young
children and families. Though I did not create a personalized behavior guidance plan but rather a generalized
one based on my beliefs, I realized how much detailed the assignment would have been if I had to actually
base it on a real child.
