LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Demonstrate proper guitar technique (body and hand position) while performing as a group ensemble as well as
during individual proficiency testing
2. Perform chord progressions that produce a quality sound which will be assessed during individual proficiency
tests
ASSESSMENTS
Observations:
Observation of students ability to tune a guitar
without a tuner
Observation of student performance of Hey Ya
Observation of student performance during
progression playing
Key Questions:
- If I want to tune the A string what string and fret do I play?
Ect.
- What time signature are most popular songs in?
- Who can remember weeks ago when we played the D
Progression? Do we remember the notes?
-What do we notice about our first finger during this
progression?
Written/Performance Assessments:
- Proficiency test #2
PROCEDURE
Introduction (5 min.):
Hook/Attention Grabber: As soon as students enter the classroom, have them bring guitars to you for detuning.
Tune string 6 to E. Untune all other strings
Assessment of Prior Knowledge: Thumbs up/ thumbs down if they recall how to tune the guitar without a tuner.
Expectations for Learning and Behaviour: Students are expected to participate in every activity. They are also
expected to use practice time effectively until they have completed the progression test.
Advance Organizer/Agenda: 1) Detuning 2) Hey Ya 3) Progressions (D, A, & G) 4) Practice/ Tests
Transition to Body: Get students to play the intro of Good Riddance with an unturned guitar. There reaction should
be hilarious.

Closure (5 min.):
Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: Playing proficiency #2 will summatively indicate if the students are
accurately playing the chord progressions.
Feedback To Students: Praise the students during individual successes during group performances. Give feedback for
improvement using rubric and aurally after students have completed their proficiency tests.
Transition To Next Lesson: Please be prepared to finish your proficiency test next class. We will be doing some chord
trivia next class as well.
