    HARDENED PROPERTIES OF SELF-COMPACTING CONCRETE

    Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is a relatively new product that shows the addition
    of superplasticizer and a stabilizer to the concrete mix in order to increase the
    facility and rate of flow.
    In this essay Im going to talk about the properties of SCC which are: compressive
    strength, modulus of elasticity, tensile strength, creep, shrinkage and bond with
    reinforcement.

    Compressive strength:
    The compressive strength is calculated from the failure load divided by the cross
    sectional area resisting the load and this type of strength is defined by the classes
    of characteristic resistance, which are determinate on the cube or cylinder.
    Modulus of elasticity:
    The modulus of elasticity is use it to control parameters in the slabs design, also is
    used to find deformational characteristics, and since it is a ratio between stress and
    strain is used in the elastic analyses.
    Tensile strength:
    It is obtained from results of splitting tensile test on cylindrical specimens, and the
    ratio between tensile and compressive strength is the base for the comparisons
    between self-compacting concrete (SCC) and normal vibrated concrete (NVC).
    Creep:
    Creep is deformation that occurs in the concrete elements due to action of a
    constant load, it depends on the characteristics of aggregate stiffness and texture,
    water and cement ratio, cement type, volume of pasta, volume of coarse
    aggregate, among others.
    The creep occurs in the cement pasta, therefore in the SCC may exhibit higher
    creep because of its high paste content.

    Shrinkage:
    Shrinkage is an essential mechanical parameter of the concrete which correspond
    to the combination of different shrinkages such as plastic shrinkage, autogenous
    shrinkage, drying shrinkage, thermal shrinkage and carbonation shrinkage.
    Bond with reinforcement:
    Bond with reinforcement is expressed in terms of the square root of compressive
    strength fc .
    The bond of SCC to embedded reinforcing and prestressing steel tended to
    produce a slightly better performance than NVC.
