Reflection: Lightning Plot

The objectives for this lesson were as follows:

Review the characteristics of the literary element of plot.

Demonstrate an understanding of plot structure by applying the term
in familiar contexts.
Use a plot diagram graphic organizer to present their analysis of plot
structure.

Student Learning:
This lesson was reinforcement to the students because they have had
success with plot and literary elements on assessments in the past. Many
students found this lesson very easy to complete were able to correctly
identify all of the components of the plot of The Lightning Thief Students
were assessed on their ability to identify story elements and all 19 students
completed the assignment successfully.
Teacher Reflection:
The plot activity required students to work in groups and create a plot poster
based off of the graphic novel Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The
Lightning Thief The students were completely engaged during the reading
of the text, and many students expressed their interest in reading other
graphic novels. When I began the activity, I took a survey of who had ever
read a comic book before, and only five or six students said that theyve read
comic book in the past. After we read the novel, many of the students said
they had enjoyed reading the novel in comic book form. As I walked around,
there were many times when I saw students engaged in their reading, and
asking questions to their peers. The excitement in the room was like nothing
I have ever witnessed during a reading activity in my classroom.
Once the students completed the reading task, I placed them in groups and
they created plot posters. The students were very thorough with the story
details they placed on their posters, and worked very well in groups. During
the activity there was positive collaboration, and I rarely had to get students
back on task to complete the assignment. The only issue I had was that
some students placed details on the plot diagram that was not in the graphic
novel. They had seen the movie before and used details from the movie. I
had the students go back and revise their posters, and it worked out fine.

This was by far one of my most successful lessons of my entire project. The
students found connections with the graphic novel, and used their reading
skills to infer events and conflicts that were not directly stated in the text. To
end the unit, I allowed the students to watch the movie then compare and
contrast it to the graphic novel as an extension. This too was a very
successful activity.
