THE countdown has begun for
another edition of the much
anticipated festival of the Jet Set
Town.
Following the launch of the
Digicel Bula Festival 2016 on May
21 massive preparations are in the
acceleration mode to stage the 56
edition of the carnival.

President Leone Naivalu stated
during the launch at the Tanoa
International hotel that people can
look forward to another exciting
week of fun and entertainment from
July 22-30.
Mr Naivalu informed that
adhering to the core purpose of
the existence of the festival the
momentum of the fundraising drive
will be further strengthened this
year.
He revealed that funds raised
from this years festival will be
diverted into three categorized areas.
We have been requested to
work in collaboration with the Nadi
Hospital Board in refurbishing the
Old Hospital. With the improved
hospital facilities this will greatly
assist both the medical workers and
the citizens of Nadi.
Secondly we will assist the

Nadi Town Council in refurbishment
of the Nadi Town Council Civic
Auditorium and finally we will
invest towards setup of a community
centre which is our long term
project.
Naivalu further revealed that on
July 22 a Torpical Cyclone Winston
appeal concert will be held at Prince
Charles Park to raise funds for those
schools that were affected in the
western division.

Commerce and Industries President

One voice for parity

THERE is a need to speak out in one voice to
achieve the parity that we are looking for and
if we look at different directions then we will
never be able to achieve this.
These were the sentiments echoed by the
Minister for Women, Children and Poverty
Alleviation Rosy Akbar at the Fiji Association
of Women Graduates Western Branch Mothers
Day and International Womens Day (IWD)
celebrations at Tanoa Waterfront Hotel on May
11.
This years IWD theme is Pledge for Parity
and we are not only fighting for parity but we
are also fighting for a pledge for acceptance in
all works of life
When we talk about parity we are talking
about bringing everything up to balance and
many a time we fail to recognize the diverse
and rich tapestry of our communities because
we tend to focus more on our differences rather
than what we have in common.

We can make our homes, communities
and country to be a better place by listening
to the voice of those who are affected, being
aware of our own attitudes and speaking out
appropriately.
The Minister also raised the concern on
why Fiji has not been able to address the issue
of violence against women and girls despite the
good laws, legislations, policies, programs, as
well as the funding support.
We need to work in partnership as
governments cannot do this alone, we need
partnerships from organizations such as yours
when are trying to fight out these issues.
Meanwhile, the Executive Chairman of Fiji
Sugar Corporation Mr Abdul Khan who was a
guest speaker at the function called for a change
in mindset and need to push harder and without
discrimination on the equality as the key factor.

THE Girmit era is not all about the usual myths that all indentured
labourers were poor, illiterate coolies as there were certain labourers
who were literate and have left a different kind of legacy behind.
Speaking at the Fiji Girmit Councils Girmit Divas program at
the Girmit Centre in Lautoka earlier this month career academic
and author Professor Subramani enlightened those who were
present regarding his personal experiences that lead to break the
misconceptions.
I would like to offer a different perspective which is more
relevant to our daily lives of what girmit legacy means to us in this
age by sharing the qualities of my father who was literate as he read
books in the Malayalam language.
He would come back from work with armful of books which
he would encourage me to read which turned me into an avid reader,
and not satisfied with only reading it became a passion and real
obsession to write.
The Professor also paid tribute to the forefathers who
contributed immensely into the education sector and the economic
development of the country despite the suffering and brutality
during the indenture period.
In view of these contributions I wish to suggest the Girmit
centre a task that it might want to undertake in proving leadership
in recording the version of the Girmit history and its legacy that
is living and personal through creation of the Girmit Reserch
Centre.
Meanwhile, the various students of the centre showcased their
talents through dance items, songs, and tabla demonstration which
are the three disciplines taught at the centre.

THE council in partnership with Consumer Council of Fiji and Ministry

of Health successfully organized and facilitated the above workshop
with representatives of food vendors involved in selling food related

products from the market area including juice sellers, sweets and food
parcels. The training was conducted on May 12, 2016 at the Sugar City

safety and good hygiene matters relevant to preparation, storage,

The topics covered included brief introduction and background
about Food Safety, Food borne Illness, General Hygiene Practices

(GHP), Food Safety Act 2003, personnel hygiene, littering, basic
requirements to be followed by all the food vendors etc. The participants
acknowledged the councils initiative in organizing the workshop.

Consumer Council of Fiji representative, Mr James Vakacabeqolialso
created awareness on consumer issues which was relevant to food

vendors in their normal food business. Subdivisional Health Inspector
Lautoka/Yasawa, JeseVatukelapresented on risk of mosquito borne
diseases and the need to adopt preventative measures especially
source destruction of mosquito breeding grounds. Awareness was also
conducted on Tobacco Control.

Chief Executive Officer Jone Nakauvadra whilst opening the
training highlighted the importance adhering to good principles of

hygiene and food safety. The stakeholders have been given a grace
period of two weeks to comply with the basic requirements failing
which council would enforce the provisions of the relevant legislations.

again as World Series champions in London.
While celebrations will continue in days to
come, the next mission is the elusive gold medal
at the Olympics which no Fijian representative
has ever won.
Can the Fiji 7s team be the one to break the
jinx?
Your answer is as good as mine. We all
know that on their day Fiji can be world
beaters. But we often are our own worst enemy.
We should be mindful that the Rio Games is
a one off tournament where there is no second
chance unlike the series.
If we do not rest on our laurels and get
rid of the laxity, we should be a proud nation
basking in glory come August.
And for the records, the national side
has now won the World Series title on three
occasions.

The month of May holds a special significance for mothers
around the world as this month has a special Sunday at
the beginning of the month for celebrations of motherhood
commonly known as mothers day.
This day also has a sad significance for some less
fortunate mothers who have been left by their families at
aged homes as they wait in vain for their families to visit
them.
For the Soroptimist International Lautoka club it has
become a tradition to celebrate this day with the mothers
of Golden Age Home (GAH) and this year again the club
members provided morning tea refreshments and spent
time listening to their memories.
One such mother at GAH is Shakuntala Devi from
Nadi who has been at the Home for fourteen years and still
await her family members.
With tears rolling down her cheeks she recounted the
years that she had spent with her four children who she
hopes will remembers and visit her one day soon.
Another resident of the Home Samsun Nisha shared

that she was a tailor and used look after her family with her
earning.
Even though I do not have any children of my own I
have helped in raising my nieces and nephews.
I used to live with my brothers family but my brother
is now bed-ridden so it is a very difficult situation for the
family.
My sister-in-law usually visits me on such special
days and I hope she visits me later today.
Meanwhile, Laisa Tubevu who has been at the Home
for a few years now advised that even though her family
members did not visit she had a visit from her church
members and she attended church with them.
The attempt by the Board of Visitors was to make this
day filled with activities to make things lively so the day
started with a bus ride around the city for the residents
and for the rest of the day clubs and individuals visited
with food and refreshments. In the evening the residents
enjoyed their dinner with special guest, the Minister for
Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Rosy Akbar.

IT has been said that the first five years of a
business will have its teething problems and
if it manages to survive the storm and move
ahead then it is deemed to be established.
As CITY STAR turns six this month without
missing out on any monthly publications in the
previous years it is an indication that the paper
is here to stay.
The humble beginnings of this newspaper
through dreams and aspirations of its Publisher
Sanjay Goundar and Editor Maika Kasami has
today risen to heights of popularity amongst
the schools, business houses, communities and
the online local and international readers.
It is never an easy task to venture into the
unknown and give life to a new idea but it is
usually these types of achievements that gives
the greatest satisfaction.
These six years have not been a totally
smooth ride for the paper as it has been affected
every time a natural disasteroccurs and we
experienced the worst with TC Winston but the

support from its valued customers has seen it
through.
The paper has now become a popular
reference point for student projects as well
as the positive reporting of community work
carried out by non-governmental organizations,
institutes and business houses has added to its
credibility.
The paper was initially established to
provide information regarding the positive
points of our communities and businesses
and while this has been achieved it is also the
up to date sports coverage that has raised its
popularity more. In addition the CITY STAR
facebook page provides regular updates of
news and sports to pique the interest.
The goal for now is for the paper to remain
a monthly issue and we keep providing our
services to our valued readers and sponsors.

THE Fiji Government is focused on building

a knowledge based society so that everyone in
the community can rise up and make decisions
rationally on their own analytical skills.
The Minister for Education DrMahendra
Reddy reminded all the stakeholders regarding
this focus during the opening of the Early
Childhood Centre (ECE) classroom at Viseisei
Primary School earlier this month.
Education will ensure that we are not led
by emotions or not led by the opportunists in
the communities to use them for their personal
agendas.
Our Prime Minister and Government is
fully committed to ensuring that our children
get the best today, immaterial of what kind
of challenges we face and you will note that
we did not let even the recent natural disaster
affect our plans on education.
The Minister also reminded the teachers
regarding their role in defining the future of the
children they groom.

Children between the age of five to
eighteen are very receptive to whatever we say
and they will take it as the Gospel truth.

It is therefore taken for granted that
teaching is a noble profession because we will
be defining the mindset and future of these
children and therefore defining future Fiji.
What we teach them will define their
entirefuture, a failure of the future Fiji will
define our failure as the current crop of
education leaders.
Dr Reddy also stressed on the importance
of ensuring that all children go through ECE to
prepare them well to enter Primary School and
also to identify any deficiencies they may have
that can be dealt with at an early stage.
He added that the Government has ensured
funding so that ECE is now free and accessible
to all children.

Rifai Rateeb legacy continues

One of the main highlights of the night
this year was that a number of devotees were
struck in their stomach with a sharp big knife
(kattaram), which penetrated almost half of
their body but within an instance with the
blessings of Allah and guidance of Molvi
Nazim they were back on their feet.
According to Mr Nazim performing this
dangerous act is only possible through the
blessings of the almighty.
He also would like to remember the
following peoples who gave him the knowledge
and strength to perform this Rateeb: Marhoom
Viran Kutty, Marhoom Abdul Mollaka,
Marhoom Moidean Kutty, Marhoom Haji
Hamsa & not forgetting Ustad from Kerala

India where he got his further permissions
(Ijazat)
He added that to perform the public Rateeb
every year a lot of preparation has to be done
and his team makes numerous sacrifices from
their daily activities.
He informed that after continuous recital
from the Holy Quran few hours before the
actual Rateeb his team members come to
a stage where they start sensing heavenly
presence around them and as such the fear of
being struck with a knife or having their body
pierced automatically disappears.
A number of young Muslim devotees
also had their faith tested this year during the
phenomenal night of Rateeb.
Meanwhile, Rateeb is an ancient traditional

art performed by the Muslim community
particularly the Malayalams.
This art which originated from Kerala
in India is still very much alive in Fiji and is
performed annually amidst hundreds of people.
The items used in Rateeb are Daff, kaddar,
dhabusa, small kattaram, big kattaram, pandam
and lobhan, etc.
Molvi Ahmed Nazim would like to thank
each and every one who helped in this Rateeb,
by cash, by hand or by any other means.

Despite few months of delay due to the
adverse weather condition people turned up
in huge numbers to witness the astonishing
acts performed by Molvi Ahmed Nazim at his
residence in Lovu, Lautoka on May 14.
With the blessing of the almighty
amidst regular recitals from the Holy Quran

Unique Characteristics of Fasting

FASTING, like praying and pilgrimage to Hajj,

is worshipping. Nonetheless, it has its own
unique characteristics. The following are some
of the unique characteristics of fasting.
The longest worshipping: Fasting is the
longest worshipping of God. Daily Prayers
will not take more than one hour every
day at most. Pilgrimage to Hajj will not
take more than a few weeks in a life
time. The worshipping of fasting is about
12 to 16 hours (depending on the season
and your geographical location) and lasts
for a whole month every year. In other
words, a faster typically spends more than
400 hours within one month for
worshipping
Does not interrupt your daily life: Fasting
unlike other types of worshipping does
not interrupt our daily transactions. One
cannot normally offer his/her daily prayers
whilst working. You ought to take a break
from your work, perform your Wudhu,
find a suitable place and offer your Salat.
Pilgrimage to Hajj is even more
so interrupting your daily life. Fasting
exceptionally is the only type of
worshipping that can be observed whilst
one is doing his normal daily work. It does
not interrupt your worldly life at all.
Worshipping God without any action: All
other types of worshipping consist of

Worshipping God is like a perfume kept in

liquid remains. The best worshipping is
the most secret of all. Once its seal is
broken it may be spoiled by showing off.
All other types of worshipping are prone
to show off. Salat, which is meant to
be offered in a group for its public nature
is prone to showing off and hence can be
easily void. Pilgrimage to hajj is even
more prone to showing off. Fasting,
however, is the only worshipping of
Allah that none other than God would
really know if you are fasting. Fasting is
an inner worshipping and hence it can be
the most sincere worshipping.
The only worshipping act that there is
a penalty (expiation) if missed deliberately.
If any Muslim misses his daily Prayers
even deliberately, although he has
committed a mortal sin, he only has to
make up the lapsed Prayers, there is no
penalty involved in it. The same applies
if one misses his pilgrimage to Hajj.
Fasting is the only worshipping act that if
is it deliberately missed in addition to
making it up, there is a hefty penalty for it.

IT is always good to ponder the true meaning of

our religious practices. The month of Ramadan
has started and almost 1.5 billion Muslims
around the globe are fasting, taking part in an
individual and spiritual journey as well as a
communal religious celebration.
Ramadan is a time to come back to our
selves; to come back to our families, our
communities, and our societies. It is time for
meditating on and for assessing our lives.
Beyond being a religious obligationand
often a family traditionfasting is a school with
different levels of knowledge, understanding
and commitment.
For every single believer, fasting is an
opportunity to think deeply about the meaning
of life, its priorities and objectives. We stop
eating and drinking during the day, the better
to master ourselves to hold in check the human
features of our being while we attempt to touch
the positive aspiration within us, like a divine
spark in our hearts. There is nothing easy about
Ramadan: it demands physical effort to gain
spiritual achievement.

Thus, the main objective is to reform and

purify ourselves, our bodies, our minds, our
hearts through demanding exercises, such as
praying, fasting and paying zakah (the purifying
social tax).
To fast is to rediscover the meaning of
mercy and compassion, starting with our own
selves. It implies that we remain trustful,
optimistic and stop being overcome with guilt.
The month of Ramadan is the month of
mercy and peace inner peace as well as peace
in the community. It is a month of love, when
we show our love to the God and spread love
around us towards our parents, our children,
our fellow human beings and especially the
poor.

us by saying Call me I shall respond to you,
come to me walking I shall come running to
you. The One God is closer to every one of us
than our jugular vein. He is so near that He is
the caring and loving Witness to all that we do.

Laylat al-Qadr:
Muslim devotees praying while breaking their daylong fasting.

THIS is the night of the Qadr. The term Al- Qadr
has been frequently translated as the power.
A better translation may be the value or the
decree because Allah says the value of this
night is better than one thousand months, a life
time of over eighty-three years. Allah sends His
decrees at this night. This is the night when the
Quran was revealed. Allah says in the Quran:
We have indeed revealed this (the Quran)
in the Night of Value (or Measure). And what
will explain to you what the Night of Value is?
The Night of Value is better than a thousand
months. Therein come down angels and the
Spirit (the angel Gabriel) by Allahs permission
with all decrees. (That night is) Peace until the
rising of the dawn. 97:1-5
The night of value is a gift to mankind from
Allah. However, it is not clear which night is
Laylat al-Qadr. Some reports by companions
of the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) elude it to be the 27th

night of the month of Ramadan, but many more

sayings point to any of the odd date nights
during the last third of the month of Ramadan.
According to authentic teachings of the Prophet
Muhammad (p.b.u.h.) Muslims are advised to
spend the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th and 29th nights
of Ramadan in worship and doing good works
to assure finding Laylat al-Qadr. A portion of
the Muslims stay up all night in prayers and
good works, however, the Prophet (p.b.u.h.)
and his companions used to sleep at least onethird of the night.
In Muslim countries, the 27th of Ramadan
is a holiday to enable people to rest during
the day after all night of worship. Schools are
closed from the 27th of Ramadan through the
2nd of Shawwal (5 to 6 days) to combine Laylat
al-Qadr and Eid al-Fitr observances.

Young Muslim sibling after offering their prayers to the almighty Allah during
Ramadhan.
WHEN the month of Ramadan begins, Muslims
enter into a period of discipline and worship:
fasting during the day, and praying throughout
the day and night. During Ramadan, special
evening prayers are conducted during which
long portions of the Quran are recited. These
special prayers are known as taraweeh.
The word taraweeh comes from an Arabic
word which means to rest and relax. The prayer
can be very long (well over an hour), during
which one stands upright to read from the
Quran and performs many cycles of movement
(standing, bowing, prostrating, sitting). After
each four cycles, one sits for a brief period of
rest before continuing -- this is where the name
taraweeh(rest prayer) comes from.
During the standing portions of the prayer, long

sections of the Quran are read. The Quran
is divided into equal parts for the purpose of
reading sections of equal length during each of
the Ramadan nights. Thus, 1/30 of the Quran
is read on successive evenings, so that by the
end of the month the entire Quran has been
completed.
It is recommended that Muslims attend the
taraweeh prayers in the mosque (after isha, the
last evening prayer), to pray in congregation.
This is true for both men and women. However,
one may also perform the prayers individually
at home. These prayers are voluntary, but are
strongly recommended and widely practiced.

Best Practice Award for SI Lautoka

REWARDS and recognitions usually act as
morale boosters for individuals, teams, clubs
and organizations and provide the motivation
to continue with their hard work.
This is also same for non-governmental
organizations (NGO) and for the Soroptimist
International Lautoka club members the
recognition that was received at the recent
Soroptimist International of the South West
Pacifics (SWP) Conference of Clubs in Sydney
added another feather to their cap.
The club was awarded with a Best Practice

Award for assistance provided to Cyclone
Winston Victims in the Naviyago Seaside area
as immediate assistance of grocery packs was
provided to affected families and thirty students
were given assistance for school essentials to
enable them to return to school.
The three day Conference from April
29 to May 1 had more than 300 members in
attendance from the thirteen member countries
of SWP.
The members were motivated by powerful
speakers at the conference on issues relating to
women and girls and the opening influential

address was by DrMehreenFaruqi, New South
Wales Member of Parliament.
Workshopswere also organized for members
to interact, learn and exchange ideas and the
conference itself provided the opportunity for
members to renew old friendships and make
new ones.
SI Fiji has also bagged the new SWP
Biennium project which will result in safe
homes for abused women in the country.
Meanwhile, of the six Best Practice
awards presented at the Conference apart for
Si Lautoka the other clubs that were rewarded

were SI Penang, Malaysia (Education Fund), SI
Petaling Jaya, Malaysia (SEEED Jobs for Life),
SI Region of South Queensland, Australia
(Photo Voice Focus on Domestic Violence),
SI South Perth, Australia (Collaboration and
Capacity Building: Family Foundation Service

and SI Lae, Papua New Guinea (Lighting the
Way to Climate Justice).

THE environment today has been undergoing

many changes. Particularly the interference
of the human activities with the natural
environment ends up with universal changes,
and thus, these changes add new dimensions to
the ecological equilibrium of the world as well
as in our Fiji Islands. The developments created
by humankind for his comfort are threatening
his own life. I feel that never before in history
have human beings had such an impact on the
Earth. The resulting problems are a product
of the size and growth of population, quantity
of consumption and quality of technology. A
general acceptance, regarding environmental
crisis is reflected on both locally in Fiji Islands
and global levels that, the present form and
degree of resource exploitation and associated
consumption practices are unsustainable.
The understanding of the 20th century
architecture, has a big responsibility in
achieving this unsustainable result. We at

building. Our main aim is to design a building
that is in harmony with nature. Some of the
approaches we take is to do a winter soltace

when it is at its lowest and seeing its effect
and thermal quality on the floor plate we have
designed. This way we can create a much more
comfortable living and breathing building.
Other ways we try to make our building more
eco-friendly is by understanding the thermal
quality of materials we specify or use in our
buildings we design.
Architecture I feel is an intervention upon
Nature. It protects human beings from the
intensities of solar exposure, climate and other
humans. Besides, architecture is a reflection of
the contemporary society in attitude, customs,
desires, needs and technology; and in present
society, the natural coherence and sustainability

become important priorities in the process of
design.
Sustainability in architecture, requires
efficient and healthful interior solar and climatic
space planning. Besides, the relationships of
the interior spaces with the exterior spaces have
to be strong and the coherence of nature has to
be provided.
Modern technology and methods of
construction have sadly degraded natural
resources- agricultural land, forests, air, and
water. There has been a loss of energy on the
Earth because of misuse.
We at Ashok Balgovind & Associates
feel that sustainable design assumes that this
misuse can no longer be sustained, because the
worldspopulation is expected to be more than
double in the next fifty years. For arguments
sake, see our local districts for example Nasinu
Area or be it Nausori Area. In both these areas
we were commission to do capital projects and
we did a population survey and related back
to history and we so significant rise in people

numbers.
Although there are other defining features
like for argument sake see the now machine
age that we are living in where we are sealing
ourselves off by using of air cons in buildings.
Whether in air-conditioned buildings, the
shopping centres or civic areas, technology
has been used to construct a world that
removes people from nature. So sustainable
design, focuses on optimizing and using the

CHONG Lee, the acting Lautoka Golf Club president has

promised more tournaments to be held at the Golf Link course
following the recent success of the Chong & Family-sponsored
the Late Yu Waiman Memorial 4-Ambrose event on Mothers
Day.
Lee said as much as he enjoyed the sport, he will make sure
that he continues to sponsor such golf tourneys in the future.
He was particularly impressed with the interest generated, the
attendance and the stiff competition shown by the respective
teams.
Meanwhile, the Bulls Team made their Mothers Day Sunday
a memorable by claiming the Chong & Family-sponsored Late
Yu Waiman Memorial 4 Men Ambrose event Cup.
The team comprised of Zabir Ali, Abdul Khan, Mohammed
Sharif and Pravin Lal. They recorded a nett score of 51.75 to
take out top honors.
Team Crusoe of Natadola, led by Amitesh Chandra with
Shivneel Sharma, Rahul Sharma and Mohd Nawaz finished
strongly on a score of 52.35 to claim the second spot while the
ever improving Top-Flite team of Apenisa Koroicure , James
Ledger, Sanjay Gopal settled for third position on 52.50.
The Chinese Palace team led by Chong Lee also had the
services of former LFA president Shalendra Prasad, Bobby
Reddy and Sunia Radovu. They recorded 52.85 for the fourth
place finish while Team Gecko led by Junior Golfer Shakeel
Pillay , Wella Pillay, Farook Daud and Paras Ram finished on
fifth spot with a score of 56.50.
Young Shakeel Pillay took out the best individual Junior
Players award with James Ledger collecting the newcomers top
contender award.
A total of 32 golfers participated in the day-long event
and the top scores recorded was the result of the excellent golf
course conditions.
Club secretary, Roneel Prakash thanked Lee and his family
for putting up the many winners & novelty prizes alongside the
special Mothers Day Lunch & Refreshments at the Top Flite
Bar and Restaurant.

GIRLS division champs Jasper Williams High School athletes

were acknowledged and rewarded for their 2016 Coke Games
triumph during a Thanks Giving Church Service held at the
school on Sunday May 15.
Guests present was a representative from sports brand BLK,
the school management and former school manager, former
minister of Wesley Church Lautoka and former divisional
superintendent of the Methodist Church of Fiji Indian division
Reverend William Lucas, together with parents, old scholars
and well-wishers.
Rev. Lucas in his message relayed that the boldness in the
athletes and the power of the Holy Spirit helped the school
record its fourth win in a row since 2013.
The power of the Holy Spirit and your boldness took away
the nervousness, tiredness, and gave you the courage to compete,
withstand pressure, move on and come away victorious, said
Rev. Lucas who now resides in Perth, Australia.
The best athlete award went to Carol Masi who won threegold medals while Alitia Wailevu had set the ball rolling when
she won the first gold medal for Jasper in the Tripple Jump event
on Day 1.
The athletes and guests were treated to a feast after the
church service.
Meanwhile, Jasper edged ACS on silver count 19-8. Both
schools had the same number of gold medals (15). Suva Grammar
School came in third with 4-gold, 2-silver and 4-bronze.
In the boys division, Marist Brothers High School turned the
table on last years surprise winner Natabua High School (NHS)
with a dominant performance raking in 17-gold, 7-silver and
10-bronze. NHS settled for second spot with 12-gold, 12-silver
and 10-bronze.
It was announced that the Jasper girls could be defending
their title on home soil once the upgraded Churchill Park with
the new all-weather synthetic track due to be ready for use by
the end of the year.

Masi is best Jasper

athlete 2016
Defeating all odds, Masi won three gold

medals at the 2016 Coca-Cola Games in Suva
to guide her new school to their four wins on
the trot in the national finals.
She won gold in the 100metres, 200m and
in the 4x100m relay in the sub-junior grade.
I attended St Johns College in Levuka
for five weeks. Then my school was destroyed
by Tropical Cyclone Winston and thats why
Im here in Jasper. Yes, I can say that Cyclone
Winston brought me to Jasper.
Masi said the cyclone had brought about
positive changes in her life that she will cherish
for a longtime.
I cant believe the things that have
happened to me in 2016 so far. It has happened
very fast. I started taking part in athletics when
I was in Class 5. Chow Games is one that
I always looked forward to participating in
during my Primary school days and now Im
happy to be part of the Coke Games with a
champion team like Jasper.

She said the support from well-wishers for

the school had been overwhelming.
Its like a breath of fresh air for me. I feel
good, feel happy, excited, and thank our
parents, the old scholars, and teachers for their
help throughout our preparation and during the
Games.
But most importantly for me Im thankful
to the school that gave me the opportunity to be
part of Team Jasper at the 2016 Coke Games in
not only my first year but in only my first few
weeks with them,
Masi predicts the 2017 Games will be
tougher and that they will need to train harder
following its silver medal count win over rivals
Adi Cakobau School.
The competition this year was tough and
2017 will be tougher. We cannot rest on our
laurels. We should learn from that and train
harder and come back a better team, the nippy
athlete added.

that was enrolled at Jasper following the
devastation caused by the natural disaster.

game against England, but I am happy and the
boys are happy that we managed to finish our

We came into the series with a plan to

defend it and we were just able to attack all
series. Before the game against Australia, I
had a chat with Ben as I was little bit anxious,
but the boys delivered when it mattered most.
That shows the character of the team. When
it mattered most this season, the boys kept
stepping up and its all down to teamwork
throughout this year.
Fiji failed to reach the Cup semi-finals on just
one occasion, in Cape Town where they went
on to win the Plate, and reached five of the
finals before London.
