BANANAS
• The banana trade has been crucial to the national economies of the
Windward Islands since it was established more than 50 years ago by the
former British colonial power to supply the UK market.
• Of the 4,000 remaining banana growers in the Windward Islands
approximately 3,400 are members of the 48 Fairtrade groups across
Dominica, St Lucia and St Vincent.
• For most Fairtrade products, buyers must pay at least the Fairtrade
minimum price. This price aims to cover the costs of sustainable
production for the producer. It’s a safety net for farmers when market
prices fall below a sustainable level. Without it, farmers are at the mercy of
sudden drops in value for their crops. When the market price is higher than
the Fairtrade minimum price, the buyer must pay the market price.
Producers are able to negotiate better prices based on factors such as
quality. There are also higher Fairtrade minimum prices for organic crops
or higher grades of produce. Through Fairtrade, producers can request
pre-financing from buyers and enter into long term, stable contracts
Why to buy fair trade products
• You should buy fair trade
because you know where
its coming from and you
know the people who pick
and make the products
get paid a fair amount.
And when you buy the
products the money goes
to the people who pick
and make the products.
Coco beans
• Most of the cocoa beans
grown in Ghana are sent
to the UK and other
countries in Europe
where they are made into
chocolate. The price
farmers receive for their
cocoa beans is often very
low and few of them can
afford to buy chocolate
Where can you buy fair-trade
products
• You can buy fair-
trade products from
mostly all
supermarkets when
you buy fair-trade
the way to know if it
is fair-trade there
will be a little logo
on the side saying
fair-trade.

FAIR TRADE IS GOOD…
• Fair trade is good because you know
where you get it from, also it sometimes
tells you if you buy the product e.g.
bananas how much the workers get.
• Fair trade is also healthy and made by
farming products all home grown fruit and
vegetables, nothing is brought from other
shops or farms.
