OBSERVATION REPORT

Name of the Cooperating School Observed: Leyte Normal University

Location of the cooperating school: Tacloban City

Date of Visit: February 9, 2011

As we went over and examined the board displays of the said campus
particularly on the left side of the lobby of the college building, we noticed that
there were there were about nineteen board displays. The board display is found
beside the second door of the dean of College of Education. They are not in places
where target viewers can see them because in the first place, the students are not
allowed to pass by the lobby. Most of the displays are about the personal
information and schedule of the teachers of the university. Most of the images are
pictures of the school faculty and colors that are mostly seen are green, blue and
red. Materials that are mostly used in making the displays are cartolinas and
styrofoams. Borders are also used by emphasizing certain words. We didn’t notice
any errors in the board displays. Some of the messages are not clear and easily
understood.

Your
Analysis
Did the board display design reflect the likes/interests of its target
audience? Why? Why not?
No, because the board display is blunt due to the usage of color. As we
observed the bulletin board and examined it. Its target audience are the incoming
first year students. So, the bulletin board should be made according to the
interests of the said audience. The board should contain a highlight and
background color respectively. Moreover, the board is not attractive. It can’t catch
attention at the first glance. Also, the arrangement of rectangles is not well done.
These all only make the bulletin board a mere one.
Was the language used clear and simple for the target audience to
understand? Why? Why not?
Yes, the language used was very clear and simple. The target audience can
easily understand the message or the content of the bulletin board. The language
used became clear because the pieces of information were organized and they
are arranged in bullet forms.

What do you think was the purpose of the board display? Was it effective?
Why? Why not?
The purpose of the bulletin board is to inform the incoming first year
students about the performance and excellence of the university. Also, to
encourage them that enrolling in this university is not a waste of time and money
because the responsibilities of the campus are stated there.

What suggestions can you make in order to improve the displays of the board?
Our first suggestion is the color of the displays. Attractive color schemes fit
the interests of the target audience. Second is the arrangement of the displays.
Since there are nine displays, it would look organized if the remaining one which
has not a pair will be put in the middle of the four pairs. Third, the capitalization of
the letters didn’t follow the visual principle of only making the title capitalized if
and only if it is only one word. The only capitalized letter should only be the first
letter of the word.

Paste (or download) here the photo of the display board you had taken.
Based on your suggestions to improve the board displays observed, make your
own board display lay-out. You may present your output through any of these:
• A hand-made drawing or sketch or layout
• A computer drawing/illustration or layout
• A collage

We are to make this layout in a landscape form since it is more suitable than a Education
portrait form to the location of the board display observed.
Your
Reflections
Name at least 5 skills that a teacher should possess in order to come up
with effective board displays. Explain why each skill is important.

1. Knowledge on visual principles

This is important because as a teacher, you have to learn if possible, all the rules
that govern visual principles for you to be aware of the measurements of everything:
letters, margin, spacing, and many others. Also the elements, pattern and
arrangements of every variable present in your board display.

2. Creativity

This is important because this is the number one factor on how to get the attention
of the target audience. The creativeness of a board display motivates the target
audience to see what is beyond what is being displayed.

3. Sensitivity

This is important because you have to know who will be your target audience and
what content are you going to put in the board display.

4. Resourcefulness

This is important so that you will not be spending too much on your board display.
You can reuse some materials but you have to make sure that they are still in good
condition. You can also make some innovations from previous materials used.

5. Knowledge about the content or the subject matter

This is important because you should only post simple information but you have to
make sure that these will be relevant to your target audience.
