The setting is at a Chinese restaurant with Florence acting as a customer and Jessica acting
as a waitress.
FLO: Good evening! Yes, I think I would like to have rice with a bowl of sharks fin soup.
For drinks I would like to have a glass of ora…..
JESS: Pardon? Did you just say that you would like to have sharks fin soup? Don’t you
know that sharks are highly endangered animals???!!! By ordering that, you would just be
contributing to their near extinction.
JESS: Well, the main reason why so many species of sharks are endangered today is because
of human actions. Nowadays, there is a huge market for the different parts of the shark such
as the fins, teeth, and cartilage. The result of the growth of this market is the increased need
for shark fishing. Commercial fishing is to blame for the millions of shark deaths every year,
and unfortunately this number will continue to rise if something isn’t done to stop it.
FLO: Yes, I agree. Besides that, I also know that the destruction of precious shark habitats is
another cause for concern because it too can negatively affect the reproduction process of the
shark. The constant slaughtering of sharks by humans and the destruction of precious habitat
are two main causes for the massive decline in overall shark population.
JESS: That is very true. However, sharks are not the only endangered animals in the world.
FLO: Yes. Many others are in the same situation. One of them is in fact, the panda. The giant
panda is the rarest member of the bear family and among the world’s most threatened
animals. This member of the bear family faces a number of threats. Its forest habitat, in the
mountainous areas of southwest China, is increasingly fragmented by roads and railroads.
JESS: Moreover, being a picky eater, an average adult panda has a daily diet of forty to eight
pounds of food a day, in which ninety-nine percent consists of only bamboo. Due to
deforestation, many pandas are dying because there is not enough bamboo to sustain their
eating habits.
FLO: Yes! If only they weren’t so picky about their food! Another animal which is close to
extinction is the pangolin. Pangolins are nocturnal animals, and are similar in appearance to
ant eaters, with the only exception that they have scales which cover their body. They are
found mostly in Africa, and Southeast Asia. Due to their use in medicines in these areas
hunting, their use in clothing, and loss of their natural habitats, their numbers are quickly
dwindling.
JESS: Besides that, I also find that it is really cruel that pangolins are served openly in
restaurants, and traded for in markets, despite the fact that they are forbidden for hunt, or
trade! Even so, customers still pay large amounts of money to eat these animals. The animals
are often kept alive in the restaurant somewhere until ordered, and then they will be
bludgeoned, brutally slaughtered, boiled and served.
FLO: Just thinking of that makes me feel queasy. Why are people so cruel to these innocent
animals?
JESS: Although many wish it is not so, this illegal actions are still taking place in many parts
of the world. Another good example is the tiger. The main predator of the tiger is humankind.
They have been trapped, poisoned and hunted heavily by humans not only to eliminate
threats to livestock, but also to make accessories such as handbags and fur coats. These
animals are also used in the making of certain types of medicine.
FLO: Yes, very often I hear of the tigers being one of the most endangered animals in the
world. Another reason which is contributing to the near extinction of this animal is the fact
that humans have altered the natural habitats of tigers by their destruction and encroachment
on the tigers' feeding range; humans are also destroying their habitats by cutting down trees,
moving into their preferred locations, polluting the water and air, and hunting their prey.
JESS: The animals that we have listed are only to name a few. I wished we could do
something to help before these animals become extinct!
FLO: But, there are things that we can do to help them! For example, we can help by
donating our money to organizations which are doing their part in saving these animals. Also,
we can sacrifice our time and volunteer to help out in organizations such as these. We would
certainly make a difference that way.
JESS: Yes, indeed! I also think that more nature reserves or wilderness areas should be set
up all over the world! More animals would be preserved and saved that way! We can help by
funding projects like these! Also, we should stop supporting the illegal hunting of animals by
preventing ourselves from buying anything which is made out of animal parts like skin, teeth
and fur.
FLO: Yes, let us do our best to help endangered animals! Alright then, enough time has been
wasted, would you mind if I reordered?
