The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) has developed a powerful, easy-to-use suite of tools to support application of the open source ADvanced CIRCulation (ADCIRC) model. ADCIRC simulates currents, water level, storm surges, temperature, and salinity in the coastal ocean including regions of shallow shelf waters, estuaries, and rivers. The tools can be modified to support other finite element based models. Such models require a complex set of input files and parameters, and the NRL software toolset makes the development of those inputs easier. The NRL toolset can generate or edit an unstructured mesh of triangular elements, facilitate the specification of a model input parameter file including periodic (tidal) boundary forcing, and assist in creating model forcing files associated with meteorological forcing. The entire software suite is designed to aid a non-expert in the set-up and application of the ADCIRC model with minimal user knowledge and intervention. The NRL toolset is currently in use by the Naval Oceanographic Office to support prediction of coastal currents and water levels.
