The three five bladed nine metre diameter wind turbines will operate whenever wind conditions are in the optimum range, and are anticipated to produce 50 Mega Watt hours of electricity per year for the landlords supply - approximately 8% of Strata SE1's estimated total energy consumption.

Snugly tted into the faade of a building in Chicago, 12 vertical-axis wind turbines are busy spinning around, generating energy as the wind passes through them, in turn powering up the building. Stacked up in two columns at the south-west corner of the building, the VAWT turbines can generate energy with wind speeds of as low as 11.1 mph winds. Costing $16,000, the turbines can produce up to 4.5 kW of power and measure 16x4 weighing 1,330 pounds.

technology

Where does that power come from? The transmission of energy to our homes and businesses is a multi-process event. Since we know that wind produces energy, scientists and engineers have figured out a way to take that energy and make electricity to power our lights, television sets and hair dryers! Wind power is a form of solar energy. About two percent of the sun's radiation that falls on the Earth is converted to wind energy through the heating and cooling of the earth's surface. When areas of the earth heat up, the hot air rises and cooler air rushes in, creating wind. When the wind blows, its energy can be used to turn the blades of a wind turbine.

Venturi effect

According to the laws governing uid dynamics, a uid's velocity must increase as it passes through a constriction to satisfy the conservation of mass, while its pressure must decrease to satisfy the conservation of energy.

Wind Power Facts Wind power is a clean energy source. Its fuel is the wind. It produces no pollution. Wind power is a renewable energy source. New wind is created every day by the heating and cooling of the earth. The price of wind power is not affected by fuel price increases or supply disruptions. Due to technological advances, wind power costs as little as three to five cents per kilowatt hour. The land used for wind turbines can also be used for other purposes such as grazing and farmland. Wind power can help save family farms by providing ongoing income for farming families. Wind plants can be built quickly to respond to electricity shortages.

The spinning of the blades sends energy to the wind turbine's generator. The generator increases the voltage from 480 volts to 12,000 to 66,000 volts! (A volt is the measure of electromotive force in electricity.) Moving through underground cables, the electricity travels to a transformer that boosts the voltage even more, up to 400,000 volts! (They boost the voltage because it's more efficient to transport higher voltage electricity.) Still in cables underground, the electricity is moved to substations, where it is reduced to lower voltages. Near our homes, electricity goes through a transformer to convert the power to even lower levels for use in our homes. The electricity now moves above ground in electrical power lines to our homes. The voltages in your home are 110 volts for lights, television and hair dryers and 220 volts for larger appliances such as your clothes washer and dryer.

Wind Turbine Facts One Wind Energy 1.5 MW wind turbine can produce enough clean electricity for about 400 homes each year. A Wind Energy 1.5 MW wind turbine is more than 328 feet tall at its tallest point (that's taller than a 32 story building). A Wind Energy 1.5 MW wind turbine weighs about 92 tons. Just one blade from the 1.5 MW wind turbine is 112 feet long (that's more than 37 yards on a football field).

The Cost Factor Small wind turbines can be an attractive alternative, or addition, to those people needing more than 100-200 watts of power for their home, business, or remote facility. Unlike PV's, which stay at basically the same cost per watt independent of array size, wind turbines get less expensive with increasing system size. At the 50 watt size level, for example, a small wind turbine would cost about $8.00/ watt compared to approximately $6.00/watt for a PV module. This is why, all things being equal, PV is less expensive for very small loads. As the system size gets larger, however, this "rule-of-thumb" reverses itself. At 300 watts the wind turbine costs are down to $2.50/watt ($1.50/watt in the case of the Southwest Windpower Air 403), while the PV costs are still at $6.00/watt. For a 1,500 watt wind system the cost is down to $2.00/watt and at 10,000 watts the cost of a wind generator (excluding electronics) is down to $1.50/watt.

The cost of regulators and controls is essentially the same for PV and wind. Somewhat surprisingly, the cost of towers for the wind turbines is about the same as the cost of equivalent PV racks and trackers. The cost of wiring is usually higher for PV systems because of the large number of connections. For homeowners connected to the utility grid, small wind turbines are usually the best "next step" after all the conservation and efficiency improvements have been made. A typical home consumes between 800-2,000 kWh of electricity per month and a 4-10 kW wind turbine or PV system is about the right size to meet this demand. At this size wind turbines are much less expensive.

Wind Turbines Most wind turbines are horizontal-axis propeller type systems. Vertical-axis systems, such as the the egg-beater like Darrieus and S-rotor type Savonius type systems, have proven to be more expensive.

Noise Assessment of Helix Wind Turbines

The assessment of noise from the Helix Wind turbine was performed as per OSHA standards with a NIST certified Extech 407738 Sound Level Meter. Measurements were taken at various points around the turbine during normal operation at a distance of 5 feet (1.5 m). The SLM was set to dB(A) and slow response.

Measurement Perimeter

Summary of Results
At low wind speed (< 7 m/s) it was difficult to measure any quantifiable difference in noise levels between the turbine running and stopped. Above 7 m/s measurements varied between 0 and 4 dB(A) between the turbine running and stopped. In both cases the ambient noise levels with the turbine stopped varied by 5 to 10 dB(A).

Laura Sink from The Art Institute of Pittsburg has just created the innovative and conceptual product called the Natura Levo. It is a small, vertical-axis turbine with a primary purpose of catching wind from any direction. This creatively shaped stationary object can be installed to any existing structures like the telephone pole, flag pole, chimney mount, or in your usual backyard. Created for Novomer Plastic, the Natura Levo has a necessary steel bearings, adjustable cylinder mount, and small housings.

Natura Levo is made primarily of Novomer plastic, with necessary steel bearings, adjustable cylinder mount, and small housings. The steel components are machined, and with the exception of the housings, these are standard forms. The remaining steel pieces would be machined in 3 separate entities and welded together. The axis is Novomer and injection blow molded; the blades are a bit more involved. They would be formed in 4 pieces and snapped together. The nature of the rotation would strengthen the fastened segments by using the natural force. These 4 pieces would be injection molded.

Designer Philippe Starck has made this time a wind turbine, to help people save from their energy usage. The turbine can save approximately 20 to 60 percent of a households energy usage. The turbines name is still at work. The word turbo is planned to in the front part of the name.

Named Revolutionair, these sleek turbines were officially debuted after 2 years of extensive research and development work. Based on the quadrangular turbine which was first revealed in 2007, these feature a brand new, helix-shaped design that offers improved performance

The Revolutionair turbines are designed for domestic use by homeowners. This means that us ordinary individuals can put them in them in our yards, gardens or on our roofs to generate green power for our households. The clear quadrangular 400W Wind Turbine has a power output of 400W and the helicoidal 1KW Wind Turbine will be able to generate 1 KW of power. If you had the large quadrangular turbine running at full capacity for an hour, that would give you one kilowatthour of energy

The turbines have been produced in Italy by Pramac and will sell for around 2,500 euros or $3489.00 for the quadrangular turbine, and 3,500 euros or $4885.00 for the helicoidal.
