Necropsy Workshop
Participation :
The workshop is open to scientists (post-graduate students and specialists) in biology,
toxicology, veterinary medicine involved in marine mammal research, with a maximum of
20 participants. Necropsy and sampling equipment will be available, but participants will
have to provide rubber boots and adequate laboratory coats.
Aims :
The aim of the workshop is to improve the participants’proficiency in (1) dissection and
sampling procedures on marine mammals mostly cetaceans, as well as their anatomy and
pathology; (2) skull morphology, extraction and fixation of the cetacean inner ear.
Participants are encouraged to collect samples for their own investigations following the
Belgian Marine Mammals Biobank agreement (agreement available on request).

Fees :
Registration fees is 100 euro, including necropsy equipment, documentation (updated
necropsy protocol, emphasizing on the inner ear dissection and fixation, coffee breaks and
the Belgian dinner (June 18). Payment will be done directly the first day. Attests (payment
and participation) will be sent on request.
Participants can have lunch at the faculty restaurant (2 minutes walking from the
department) for the two days (possibilities of sandwich, salad bar, buffet).
A dinner will be offered on Wednesday June 18 with possibility of vegetarian meals and
will be organized at the “Hôtel des Touristes” (see table below). Please confirm your
participation at the dinner and specify your preference for vegetarian or not-vegetarian
meals.
Hotel accommodations should be organized by participants at their own charge. Here
below is non-exhaustive list of some hotels.

19h30: Belgian aperitif and dinner (meat on brazier) 13h30: head dissection (porpoises and Blainville’s)

(t.jauniaux@ulg.ac.be) with name, institution name and address, Authorization of the
supervisor is necessary for students, as well as filled in and signed agreement for tissues
bank if needed.
