1.5 Reflection On Developmental Social Work
Reflect on the information on Developmental Social Work in the unit and recommended reading. 2. Write the answers to the following questions in your journal a. What is your understanding of developmental social work? My understanding of the Developmental Social Work approach is that it came into being as a response or solution to poverty, deprivation and inequality of treatment. It focuses on empowering the person with the problem to find solutions as this approach emphasises selfdetermination and client participation. It does not offer the solutions rather it facilitates change and growth within the individual and offers avenues that can help to solve the problem. The developmental social approach focuses on both economic policies and social intervention as it emphasises that both are intertwined and equally important. With this approach clients are required to participate and focus on the use of their strengths, they are offered support from both the social workers and the community. b. What aspects of the approach resonated with you and why? The aspect that resonated with me the most is the fact that it is client centred. It focuses on the clients strengths, working on those abilities they already have to help facilitate change and growth within them. I like the fact that it offers avenues that can help the client to change their lives. This approach provides opportunities that not only help with emotional issues but also economic issues which sometimes are the root cause of the emotional ones. I believe in the holistic approach to solving problems and this approach attacks the problems from different angles. c. Describe how the approach affected or altered your thoughts about Social Work. This approach did not alter my thoughts but it did reinforce some of my beliefs about the many issues that I will deal with as a social worker. This approach is about helping individuals with their varying issues and making sure they receive social justices which are a goal I wholeheartedly support. Those are two of the core values I believe a social worker needs and should have. After all, this is a helping profession. d. How could you use this approach for social work in your country? I would use this approach within my community which is a rural area. It is poorly developed and there a lot of discriminated and unemployed persons especially young men living here. They need empowerment as their self-esteems are very low. I would work with other government agencies and institutions like Jamal to help with the level of illiteracy, CDA and the probation office to help with counselling for the unemployed who feel hopeless and try to source training for those who have no marketable skills.
e. Say whether it is an approach you intend to use and why. This is an approach I plan to use as I believe this holistic approach is one that would suit my personality and capabilities and would also work with a lot of the communities I have knowledge of. It will help to lower the level of illiteracy, unemployment and help with motivating the poorer majority of Jamaica to strive for what they want, set goals and just believe in themselves.
