Cyber-observers for democracy in action The maiden web-casting of the election process in Kerala found resonance in the cyber world with at least 3,783 persons across the globe logging on to the chief electoral officer's website to watch democracy in action. The poll proceedings from 83 booths in Kerala were web-cast on the site www.ceo.kerala.gov.in. Data made available to The Hindu reveal the number of unique client IPs.' This may not directly translate o t that many users as multiple users from one organisation could have accessed the web-cast using the same IP address. the maximum unique client IPs' were registered from Kerala itself 1141. While 235 IPs were logged from Tamil Nadu, 224 were from Delhi. The others were Karnataka (176), Maharashtra (115), Gujarat (22), Uttar Pradesh (32), Rajasthan (20), and Pondicherry (3). 2. Legendary archaeologist Lewis Binford passes away Lewis Binford, founder of the New Archaeology movement and one of the seniormo st figures in world archaeology, has passed away at the age of 80. Professor Binford was suffering from heart-related problems for the past few weeks and died at his country home at Kirksville in Missouri State of the United States in April 11, according to K. Paddayya, Emeritus Professor of Archaeology and former Director, Deccan College, Pune. 3. New India Foundation fellowships The New India Foundation invites applications for its seventh round of fellowships. Fellowship holders (who are paid Rs. 70, 000 a month) are expected to write original books that contribute to the fuller understanding of independent India. The Foundation is ecumenical as regards subject and genre. Books could be about politics, economics, or culture, and may take the form of a m emoir, a work of reportage, or a thickly footnoted academic study. 4. BRICS give credit to local currencies Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, the BRICS grouping of influential developing countries have signed an agreement to use their own currencies instead of the predominant US dollar in issuing credit or grants to each other. The first-of-its-kind agreement was signed at the third BRICS Leaders Meeting in Sanya, China. the five BRICS economies together hold around 40 percent of the world's currency reserves, the majority of which is still in US dollars. The interbank co-operation agreement was signed by Luciano Coutinho, president of Brazil's development bank BNDES; TCA Ranganathan, president of India's Exim bank; Vladimir Dmitriev, chairman of Russia's Vnesheconombank; Gao Jin, deputy president of the China Development Bank; and Jabu Moleketi, chairman of the Development Bank of Southern Africa. The China Development Bank was ready to pump up to 10-billion yuan of loans into Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa this year. 5. Doha meet short of rebels' hopes The first meeting of an international contact group on Libya has agreed to exert more pressure on the regime of Libyan strongman Muammar Qadhafi, but stopped short of expanding the list of countries that formally recognise the opposition. During the meeting in Doha, participants discussed establishing a fund that will channel resources to the opposition operating from Benghazi, Libya's second largest city. British Foreign Minister William Hague, who co-chaired the first session of the conference with Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Hamed bin Jassem, called for setting up a temporary financial mechanism that would support the Transitional National Council (TNC) of the opposition.

TRAI proposes Rs.1-lakh cr infrastructure investment The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) issued important recommendations related to manufacturing, infrastructure and green telecom to promote structured growth of the sector. It has also proposed investments of over Rs.1-lakh crore for technical upgradation and improvement of manufacturing capabilities of the sector. It has asked for making green measures as an integral part of the proposed National Telecom Policy 2011 and ensuring energy certification for all telecom products, equipment and services in the telecom network. 7. India to sign pact with Kazakh oil field In yet another step towards securing energy sources for meeting high demand for the fossil fuel, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will reach Astana, the Capital of Kazakhstan on April 15, to sign an agreement, which will give India 25 per cent stake in the Satpayev oil field on the Caspian Sea. The deal, being negotiated by ONGC Videsh Ltd. (OVL), is expected to cost aroun d $400 million (about Rs.1,800 crore). The deal will be signed during Dr. Singh's three-day visit for a bilateral summit between India and Kazakhstan. Under the proposed agreement, Kazakhstan will transfer 25 per cent stake in the Satpayev oil field to OVL and the balance 75 per cent will be held by Kazakh's national oil firm KazMunaiGas, which is the operator of the oil field. The Satpayev oil field is situated in the highly prospective region of North Caspian Sea and in proximity to at least four fields. 8. Mundra Port's cargo handling crosses 50 mt Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone has handled over 50 million tonnes of cargo during 2010-11. it has emerged as the seventh largest port in terms of annual cargo handling volume. The company expects to handle 80 million tonnes of cargo in the current year. 9. Brazil, Italy climb in rankings Brazil climbed to third place in the latest FIFA world rankings published knocking Germany off the podium and dropping South American rival Argentina one place to fif th.
