Australia crowned World Champs for fifth time

The Editors Column

Dear Student,
Welcome to the April Edition of the Law Bulletin.
This month saw the curtains coming down on one of
the biggest events in the cricketing kingdom, with
Australia bagging the crown. On the other hand, the
controversial cricketing teenager Indian Premier
League raised the curtains on its eighth edition.

Australia overwhelmed New Zealand to win the

World Cup for a fifth time at an ecstatic
Melbourne Cricket Ground.
New Zealand lost influential captain Brendon
McCullum to the fifth ball of the match and were
bowled out for 183.
Australia rarely looked troubled, sealing a sevenwicket win in 33.1 overs, with captain Michael
Clarke scoring 74 and Steve Smith 56 not out.
Clarke, in his final one-day international, was given
a standing ovation by the record 93,000 crowd and
welcomed by his team-mates on the boundary.
Overall, with two double-centuries, seven scores in
excess of 150 and 38 centuries, there was no
shortage of batting prowess on display in Australia
and New Zealand during the World Cup. And 28
four-wicket hauls, including two hat-tricks, mean
the bowlers have played their part, too.
From an attendance point of view the India -South
Africa game on 22 February at the Melbourne
Cricket Ground had more than 86,000 people
cheering for their respective teams, a phenomenal
result given that neither of the host teams were
involved.
While Englands shocking exit and the associates
freewheeling cricket did make headlines, it was
India, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia
who made it to the semis.

The ICC Cricket World Cups awards ceremony

attracted quite a bit of eyeballs after ICC President
Kamal stepped down as N Srinivasan handed out the
World Cup trophy instead of him.
Narendra Modi is visiting France, Germany and
Canada, with the Rafale deal, which had been pending
for a long time and Make in India campaigns on his
mind. He was chosen to inaugurate the Hannover Fair.
Social media in India is abuzz with discussions on net
neutrality, with campaigns and petitions flying
everywhere to ensure that no one gets to decide who
chooses which site over the other. Thanks to some
heated debate on the subject, Flipkart has pulled out
of its deal with Vodafone.

Indian Raahat offers relief to other countries too
In view of the security situation in Yemen, international
community joined efforts to evacuate nationals from
various countries from Yemen. India launched a
massive rescue operation, which resulted in the
evacuation of over 5600 persons by special flights and
Indian naval vessels. Those evacuated included nearly
5000 Indian nationals and over 1000 foreign national
from 41 countries. Russia was one of the countries
whose nationals were evacuated by India.
On 11 April, 5 more Russian nationals were evacuated
and transported by Indian naval ship INS Tarkash from
Aden (Yemen) to Djibouti.
Between April 2 to 10, Central Railway has confirmed
1,059 tickets for evacuees. A passenger reservation
counter has been opened at the international airport
which is manned by IRCTC officials.
Yemen, tucked between Oman, Saudi Arabia and the
Gulf of Aden, has become the latest conflict zone in the
Middle East. After rescuing more than 3000 Indians
from war-torn Yemen, India received requests from 26
other countries, including USA, France and Germany to
help evacuate their citizens from Yemen.
The rescue operation rightly named as Operation Rahat
meaning relief, was brilliantly orchestrated by the
Indian Navy, Indian Air Force and Air India. This is
Indias biggest ever foreign rescue operation.
Snapdeal acquires mobile recharge service FreeCharge
Snapdeal acquired mobile recharge service FreeCharge
in a cash and stock deal. With this acquisition, Snapdeal
became the largest mobile commerce company in India.
The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but as per
estimates, the deal is worth $450 million. The value of
the deal is much higher than Flipkart Ltds $330 million,
plus acquisition of online fashion retailer Myntra in May
2014.
As per the deal, Freecharge will continue to work as an
independent platform and will offer many more digital
goods in future. Also, most of Freecharges institutional
investors would get Snapdeal stock.
The acquisition of FreeCharge, which boasts of 20
million users, also makes Snapdeal the company with
the highest daily transactions and the highest user base.
Further the acquisition means that Snapdeal and
FreeCharge will together generate more than 1 million
daily transactions and have 40 million users on the
mobile.
Over the past six months, Snapdeal has bought four
companies. These include amongst other software

provider Unicommerce, logistics service company

GoJavas and luxury fashion marketplace
Exclusively. Snapdeal is run by Jasper Infotech
Pvt. Ltd.
Mobile commerce is booming in the country and
the number of mobile Internet users is expected
to increase to 480 million by 2017, according to a
joint report by Google and AT Kearney.
Freecharge, which competes with Paytm, was
launched in 2010 by Kunal Shah.
Hockey India confers inaugural HI Annual Awards
Hockey India conferred the inaugural Hockey India
Annual Awards. The awards were conferred to
recognise the dedication and hard work of hockey
players, coaches and administrators on the field to
build the sport on the national and international
arena.
The awards of over Rs 2.80 Crore were presented
in a ceremony at New Delhi in the presence of
Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports,
Sarbananda Sonowal.
Hockey India conferred the awards in the
categories of Major Dhyan Chand Lifetime
Achievement Award to Balbir Singh Sr. with a cash
prize of Rs 30,00,000.

India elected to four United Nations agencies
India was elected to four important United
Nations (UN) agencies -- United Nations Childrens
Fund (UNICEF), World Food Program (WFP),
Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal
Justice (CCPCJ) and the Governing Council of UNHabitat. India was elected at the Coordination and
Management Meeting (CMM) of UNECOSOC (the
United Nations Economic and Social Council) held
at the UN headquarters in New York, USA.
India was elected by acclamation, which is a form
of election that doesnt use a ballot.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee gets Bharat Ratna
President of India Pranab Mukherjee presented
Bharat Ratna award to Former Prime Minister of
India Atal Bihari Vajpayee at his home. Bharat Ratna
is India's highest civilian honour.
He is the seventh prime minister to receive the
award after Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv
Gandhi, Morarji Desai, Lal Bahadur Shastri and
Gulzarilal Nanda.
The award giving ceremony is usually held at
Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi, but an exception
was made keeping in mind the his poor health.
Vajpayee is the first non-Congress prime minister to
serve full five years in office. He held the post from
1998 to 2004. In 1996, he had held the post for 13
days. Within two weeks of assuming office for a
second time, Vajpayee had ordered nuclear tests at
Pokhran.
During his tenure, he was credited with taking bold
initiatives, notable among them being the historic
bus journey to Lahore in 1999, when he signed the
landmark Lahore Declaration with Prime Minister
Nawaz Sharif, both sides pledging to push for peace
and security.
RBI signs Currency Swap Agreement with Central
Bank of Sri Lanka
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) signed a $400 million
currency swap agreement with the Central Bank of
Sri Lanka. The agreement is valid for a period of
three years from the date of signing.
According to the agreement, the Central Bank of Sri
Lanka can make withdrawals of US Dollar or Euro in
multiple tranches up to a maximum of $400 million
or its equivalent. This agreement will further
economic co-operation between the two countries
and also bring in more financial stability in the
region.
The Currency Swap Agreement with Sri Lanka was
inked in the backdrop of the announcement of May
12 by the RBI Governor during the SAARC FINANCE
Governors meeting, held in Nepal. At the meeting,
RBI had offered swap facilities aggregating $2 billion,
both in foreign currency and Indian Rupee to
neighbouring countries of the SAARC region.
This facility will be available to all South Asian
Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC)
countries -- Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan,
Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan & Sri Lanka.

Germanwings Airbus A320 Flight 4U 9525 crashes
Flight 4U 9525 of Germanwings Airbus A320, the
budget carrier airline of Germanys Lufthansa,
crashed in the French Alps between Digne and
Barcelonnette with 150 people on board.
All 144 passengers and six crew members on
board were killed in the worst air disaster in the
mainland France in 40 years.
The Flight 4U 9525 of Germanwings Airbus A320
was carrying citizens of Germany, Spain, Australia,
Turkey, Denmark, the Netherlands and Belgium
from Barcelona (Spain) to Dusseldorf (Germany).
The cause of the crash is now being assumed as a
co-pilot with an unstable mental condition, from
the Black box of the plane that has been
recovered.
Al-Shabaab attacks Garissa College in Kenya
Al-Shabaab, a terrorist outfit carried out a
massacre killing 147 people in the Garissa
University College situated in Garissa County in
northeastern Kenya.
In all, 151 people were killed including 142
students, three security officers, two university
security personnel and four militants, who were
killed by the security forces. The attack left 104
people injured, including 19 who are in critical
condition.
The college campus is situated 145 km away from
the porous Somalia-Kenya border.
Al-Shabaab is a Somalia-based militant org. and an
al Qaeda affiliate. The group has been blamed for
a series of attacks in Kenya, including the siege at
the Westgate Mall in Nairobi in 2013 in which 67
people were killed.
The group has vowed to retaliate against Kenya for
sending troops to Somalia under Operation Linda
Nchi in 2011 to fight the Al-Shabaab militants who
had kidnapped foreigners and aid workers inside
Kenya.
According to an estimate by the Kenyan
Government 312 people have been killed in AlShabaab attacks in Kenya from 2012 to 2014. The
terror attack is the second-worst in the country's
history next to the bombings carried out by AlQaeda on the US Embassy in Nairobi in which 213
people were killed.
