NICK COHEN/The Sun
Students of Seneca High School gave the community a taste of the Hollywood red carpet during the ninth annual DECA Fashion Show held Feb. 5. Kids modeled several different
fashions for students and parents to consider for the upcoming prom season. Those in attendance also took part in a silent auction and enjoyed a performance by the schools
drum line.
Rolling out the red carpet
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
While they may not have seen
Kanye or Beyonce, the local com-
munity got a taste of the Holly-
wood red carpet on Feb. 5 as part
of the ninth annual DECA Fash-
ion Show held at Seneca High
School.
Students were given the chal-
lenge of marketing the occasion
to the target audience.
Its a whole semester of learn-
ing, said Grace McCloskey, a
teacher at Seneca who oversees
the event. The students need to
decide the best form of promo-
tion for the event.
Organizers utilized their per-
sonal social media accounts to
help reach the target audience
comprised of peers and their fam-
ilies.
These kids are so quick these
days, especially with technology,
McCloskey said.
Additionally, they sent emails,
tweets and Facebook posts in-
forming anyone about the upcom-
ing event.
As they learn something, then
they actually apply it, Mc-
Closkey said, noting students
have made commercials in the
TV technology department.
They work hard.
Having the TV technology has
been phenomenal, she said.
The students also utilize the
media center.
The kids just work so hard on
this project, they really stepped
up to the plate, McCloskey said.
Part of the assignment was
creating a budget for the event as

Residents hope to see safety
improvements to Grassy Lake Road
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
Residents of Grassy Lake Road
attended Shamongs monthly
township meeting Feb. 4 in hopes
that the committee will put the
pedal to the pavement in making
their road safer.
Residents originally attended a
meeting in May 2013 to present
the committee with a proposal on
what could be done to prevent mo-
torists from speeding on the nar-
row, residential road.
Grassy Lake Road resident
John Angermeier commended
the committee for the job it has
done since concerns were first
raised in May, but said work still
needed to be done.
We presented an eight-point
proposal with the final point
being speed bump installation.
The township was very under-
standing of our concerns and has
tried to help the situation since
May by providing additional
speed limit signs, periodic place-
ment of speed monitoring equip-
ment, painting the no passing
zone and requesting New Jersey
State Police enforcement. But as
you all know, the speeding contin-
ues, Angermeier wrote in a let-
ter to residents and the commit-
tee. It is an opportune time to
again go before township commit-
tee and express our safety con-
cerns and appeal for installation
of two speed bumps to address
the dangerous speeding on
Grassy Lake Road.
Grassy Lake Road runs from
Indian Mills to Atsion roads, in-
tersected by Stokes Road. The sec-
tion of road between Atsion and
Stokes is posted 35 mph, while the
part between Indian Mills and
Stokes is 25 mph.
Several residents said they reg-
ularly witness cars driving more
than 15 mph over the posted speed
limit. They also reported several
incidents of trees and lawns
being damaged by drivers losing
control of their vehicles due to
excessive speeding. Concerns
about child safety, as well as the
inability to walk or bike around
the neighborhood, were also
raised. Those in attendance men-
tioned that checking the mail or
backing out of a driveway have
become high-risk activities.
Is it going to take someone
dying before something gets
done? resident Brenda Edward
asked the committee.
This is not a BS answer to get
you guys to go away, Mayor Ken
Long said. Something will be
done. We want to get this fixed,
please see COMMITTEE, page 3
but it does come down to budget
and what we are able to do.
Township administrator Sue
Onorato said the committee,
along with township engineer
Dan Guzzi, will be doing a tour of
Shamongs roads in the coming
weeks to prioritize what needs to
be done and when. Guzzi said he
would look into the possibility of
installing two permanent speed-
monitoring devices that would
flash if motorists drive faster
than the posted speed limit.
Trooper Wayne Blancher of
the State Polices Red Lion Bar-
racks was also in attendance at
the meeting and assured resi-
dents their concerns had been
heard and will continue to be.
I have been on details on
Grassy Lake Road, so it some-
thing we are addressing, Blanch-
er said. I will request to have our
speed monitoring device with the
New Jersey State Police seal
placed on the road as well as look
into having details placed on the
road during peak travel times.
Long requested that residents
be patient with the committee in
further addressing the road but to
expect a meeting at the end of
March.

Parenting a child with chal-
lenges can feel like a lonely jour-
ney.
We would like to make families
aware of a support group for Sha-
mong parents, grandparents and
caregivers of children with any
type of special needs. The group
is called IMPACT which stands
for Indian Mills Parent Advisory
Cooperative Team. This parent-
run group has a mission to make
a positive impact in the lives of
students in our community who
have learning, social or behav-
ioral differences.
Every month, meetings pro-
vide an opportunity to: share
ideas, resources and information;
learn from each other; and ensure
these children reach their highest
level of achievement. But in addi-
tion to general meetings, which
allow for these discussions, the
group has also been successful in
getting expert speakers to come
out to IMMS to present on a vari-
ety of topics.
The next meeting is Thursday,
Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the IMMS li-
brary. Amy Golden will present
on "Social Skills: Best Practices
for Developing and Generalizing
Skills. March 20 will be a gener-
al meeting, and on April 10, the
group has arranged for Dr. Sarah
Allen, a neuropsychologist and
certified brain injury specialist to
present on Concussions a
topic of interest to a very broad
population.
Seminars are open to all par-
ents interested in the topic. If you
would like to learn more or join
the groups email list for meeting
and speaker announcements,
write to: impact4shamong@
gmail.com. This is the groups
email address and a parent will
get back to you.
Meetings are monthly at IMMS
Library. For start time, visit

ents/ParentAdvisoryGroup.aspx

More than 20 baskets were pro-
vided for attendees to bid for, with
prizes ranging from restaurant
gift certificates to candles and
kitchen needs.
For McCloskey, managing the
large group of students was a
challenge.
This year was tough, she
said, noting an increase of ap-
proximately 35 students from
years past. Its hard to keep them
focused sometimes.
McCloskey allowed the stu-
dents to take the reins, acknowl-
edging she lends them guidance
throughout the process.
They cant learn unless they
make mistakes, which they do,
McCloskey said.
The night was comprised of
students strutting their stuff
across the auditorium stage while
hosts Samantha Hagmayer, John
Mauer and Gene Mosca of For-
mal Expressions Tuxedos ex-
plained what the kids were wear-
ing. The event not only raises
money for the schools marketing
class but also gives parents an
idea of what their child can wear
to the prom.
McCloskey said the best part of
the show is when the events over
and the students see what they
did.
The show is recorded and each
student gets a digital copy to
show prospective schools or em-
ployers.
Ive learned that if you give
the students a challenge, they will
meet it, McCloskey said.

Parents need to help Indian
Mills schools settle contract
Parents of Shamong, please unite and
help the teachers and staff of the Indian
Mills schools settle their contract.
This school board needs to hear from
you! They were voted in as your voice for
education and to enhance the learning en-
vironment.
Right now, that voice is saying, we only
give money to administrators and we ig-
nore everyone else! Here are glaring ex-
amples of their generosity to the adminis-
tration:
1. The principals were given a 7 percent
raise.
2. The business administrator received
a 3 percent raise after he submitted his re-
tirement request.
3. The new superintendent was hired at
the top salary allowed.
4. A curriculum supervisor was hired
for $3,000 more than the one who was re-
placed.
5. The supervisor of building and
grounds was given a $1,500 safety stipend
instead of calling it a raise.
All this money was available, but noth-
ing for the teachers. As a past president of
the Shamong Township Education Associ-
ation, I am hearing from frustrated col-
leagues who are wearing T-shirts, putting
signs in cars, going to early and late meet-
ings and even taking days off that need to
be made up, but to no avail.
No employee wants all this unrest in the
workplace, and your children deserve bet-
ter. The school should be a peaceful envi-
ronment where everyone is only focusing
on educating the children, but the board is
in no hurry to negotiate, so this upheaval
continues.
The wonderful parents of Indian Mills
have supported the teachers in the past be-
cause they know that the hard-working
teachers are the core of the great educa-
tion that the children receive.
The scores remained high and the stu-
dents performed well even when there was
no permanent superintendent, no curricu-
lum supervisor, no full-time director of
pupil services and no supervisor of build-
ing and grounds!
This is the longest unsettled contract
in the districts history for the teachers and
support staff, and they need your help. As
the website says the teachers are enrich-
ing the lives of students, but the only lives
the school board is enriching are the lives
of administrators.
If you feel that you can lend a hand,
please call the board members or attend a
board meeting.

T
he nations second-largest
drugstore chain took a stand
last week: By October, it will no
longer sell tobacco products at its 7,600
stores.
To that, we say good for you, CVS,
even if you are being inconsistent in
your message.
CVS Caremark unit is a major
pharmacy benefits manager for busi-
nesses and the U.S. governments
Medicare program. As such, it has be-
come a major health-care business,
trailing only Walgreen Co. as the
largest pharmacy chain in the country.
CVS made a bold, precedent-setting
move, said Dr. Risa Lavizzo-Mourey,
the chief executive officer of the
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation,
because it acknowledges that phar-
macies have become health-care set-
tings.
Analysts believe CVS decision
could convince Walgreen Co., Rite Aid
Corp. the third-largest pharmacy
chain and other pharmacies
throughout the country to make a sim-
ilar move to help eliminate smoking in
the United States.
Piggybacking the decision to halt to-
bacco sales, CVS executives said the
company would replace some of the
lost sales through smoking cessation
programs.
Its hard to argue with CVS deci-
sion, as any move to improve public
health has to be seen as positive. But
its a little hypocritical, dont you
think?
If the reason why CVS will stop sell-
ing tobacco is because it believes it is a
health-care setting, then shouldnt it
stop selling other unhealthy items
such as greasy potato chips, sugary
soft drinks and other processed foods
as well? Does this country also not
have an obesity problem?
One step at a time, you say? That
makes sense. Smoking first; obesity
second. Sounds like a plan.
In all seriousness, good for CVS.
Good for taking a stand that, even if it
might improve the bottom line in the
long run, will surely hurt it in the
short term.
Other pharmacies should follow
suit. Health-care settings should
promote healthy living.
in our opinion
No smoking here!
Sure, it might be slightly hypocritical, but good for CVS for taking a stand
Your thoughts
What are your thoughts on the move by
CVS to not sell tobacco products at their
stores? What role should private busi-
nessess have in health-care initiatives?
How about public entities such as the
municipality? Share your thoughts with a
