ABSTRACT: First, this paper describes the intricacies of the Classical Nahuatl honorification system based on Sullivan (1988) and Carochis (2001) accounts of the language. Nahuatl honorifics have been neglected in recent formal linguistics, although several other languages have systems which have been discussed extensively. Following the description, there is a comparative analysis between honorification in Classical Nahuatl and the existing literature on the Japanese honorific system. I review three major papers; Boeckx and Niinuma (2004), Bobaljik and Yatsushiro (2006), and Ivana and Sakai (2007), which address the light-verb versus honorification as agreement analyses of Japanese honorification in addition to syntactic placement of honorific projections and constraints upon accusative objects of honorification. I then apply these treatments to Nahuatl. Although the languages are unrelated, the literature on Japanese honorification provides a solid syntactic foundation on which to begin analyzing issues in Classical Nahuatl honorification. 1. Introduction Although there are many dialects of Nahuatl spoken throughout Mexico today, few of them are fully documented. Classical Nahuatl, which was spoken when the Spanish first arrived, was described at length. However, because it is no longer spoken, the accounts of Classical Nahuatl tend to be older and not founded in linguistics, making them difficult to work with. I will first describe the languages honorifics in linguistic terminology, attempting to clarify any discrepancies found within the varied accounts of Nahuatl. This paper outlines the various verbal, postpositional and nominal forms used in Classical Nahuatl honorification constructions. Returning to work that has already been done in the field of honorification, I will introduce some studies demonstrating various linguistic treatments of the Japanese system. I will then analyze the Nahuatl structures in depth in an attempt to describe their usage and syntax using the tools found in literature on Japanese honorifics. 2. Overview of some Honorific Systems While not present in all of the worlds languages, honorific systems, grammaticalized ways of expressing respect or deference in certain social situations, are an incredibly widespread and variable linguistic phenomenon. Many languages demonstrate at least two or more levels of honor or respect shown to individuals depending on a variety of factors including the speaker and listeners social class, Mollman 4
age, gender, or whether the listener is part of the speakers in-group. For example, Maithili 1 expresses three levels of honorification; nonhonorific, mid-honorific and high-honorific. They express this through a complex system of agreement where up to three arguments may be expressed on the verb. 1. u daur-ait ai-ch 2 . In example 1, u is the third person nonhonorific pronoun preceding the verb. Honorification is not explicitly marked on the verb in this case, although third person is, agreeing with the pronoun. Example 2 demonstrates a slight change into high honorific speech, the pronoun is now o and there is a third person honorific agreement marker on the verb as well. Maithili limits its honorification to elevated individuals, while some languages include pejoratives, or morphemes which indicate social status lower than the speaker, as well. Pohnpeian 3 also expresses three levels grammatically, but they are broken up differently, into low-status, common and high-status, according to Keating (2005. 13). One uses the high-status, or honorific form in reference to a social superior, while using the low-status, or humiliative, to refer to oneself in the presence of the superior. These forms are used in conjunction with a series of hierarchically ordered titles, depending both on hereditary rank and some upward mobility, which represent different roles within the society (10). Pohnpeian marks honorification with a number of

alternative word forms on many locative expressions, pronouns, some verbs and possession or relation classifiers. A common method for expressing respect is through pronouns, as in some Indo-European languages as well as other languages such as Turkish. In these languages a speaker chooses different pronouns in reference to a particular person who is to be honored. In Spanish and German, this means that instead of using a second person singular pronoun, one would choose the third person singular pronoun in order to address people of higher status politely. In Turkish, French and Yoruba (Abiodun 1992), one uses the plural form, rather than the singular form to show a higher level of respect. In both of these languages, as one changes the pronoun, one also changes the morphology of verbs and adjectives to agree with the honored pronoun. The following example is taken from Turkish pronoun alternations: 3. (Sen) nasl iste-r-se-n yle ol-sun. (Sekin Yldrm, 2009 p.c.) This type of honorific system is quite common and not particularly complex syntactically, as the pronoun chosen triggers exactly the same syntactic and morphological effects whether it is used honorifically or literally. As this example demonstrates, the honorific form in pronoun honorification will be identical to the regular form with that particular pronoun. Therefore, the addressee must decide which is the appropriate meaning based on context rather than relying on overt distinctions between the two. Other systems are largely lexical, rather than grammatical, using specific words as honorific markers. Such languages, Chinese for example, often make heavy use of titles while speaking to strangers or people of a higher social status. For instance, job titles are often used directly after ones family name, as in Liu shuji, 'Secretary Liu, alternatively, one can say Liu shuji tongzhi,'Secretary Mollman 6
Comrade Liu,' for greater honor. According to Fang and Heng (1983), tongzhi, comrade, is an old title that has recently fallen out of favor with the younger generations, despite being very common previously. In addition, a number of titles including zhuren, 'director,' and zhang, 'chief,' are all commonly used when referring to others of a higher rank. Xiao is used by superiors to refer to their subordinates. Lao, which is now a purely reverential title, is another term frequently appended to names (497-500). Chinese also makes use of self-humbling words and phrases in order to elevate the listener in relation to the speaker. Chinese also has an honorific pronoun, nin, instead of the regular form, ni, although it is becoming obsolete. (Fang & Heng 1983) Still other languages exhibit morpho-syntactically based honorification with varying degrees of complexity. Languages such as Nahuatl, Japanese, Korean and Javanese are commonly cited as having these types of special honorific registers. In Japanese, there is an honorific prefix which attaches to certain nouns and nominalized verbal constructions, marking them as honorific when referring to or in the presence of a socially superior individual. In addition, there are specific verbs which have suppletive forms in place of the regular honorific constructions. The passive may also be used to produce an honorific reading in Japanese. The Japanese system is fairly complex in that there are multiple ways to form honorifics along with a distinction between subject and object honorification. Below are three examples of Japanese sentences. The first one is nonhonorific, while the second and third forms are two different methods used to produce an honorific reading. 5. Taroo-ga kaet-ta. Taroo NOM go.home-PST Taroo went home. 6. Sensei-ga o-kaeri ni nat-ta. (Ivana and Sakai. 2007. 172) Professor-NOM HON-go.home.ren OBL become-PST The professor went home. (Ivana and Sakai) 7. Nahuatl is more complex yet. In Nahuatl, multiple regular verb forms, most commonly the causative or applicative, can be used in honorific constructions. Like Japanese, it also has an honorific affix which is utilized on nouns, some verbs and even postpositional constructions. In the systems surveyed above, it seems there are two separate ways of dealing with a grammaticized honorific system, honorifics for addressees and honorifics reserved for arguments of sentence, such as in Turkish and other pronominal honorification systems. Honorification for addressees is used in the presence of a social superior, though not necessarily in direct reference to them. Japanese exhibits both styles of honorification, having the constructions outlined above for referent honorification and polite versus plain verb forms to be used in certain situations or while talking to social superiors. In addition, there is the phenomenon of polite speech, which may be used both in direct reference to a speaker, or else in their presence. Most, if not all languages have some way of expressing polite or more casual speech, whether it be in nonverbal cues or certain lexical items and phrases. This paper is more concerned with the honorific modes of expression which are grammaticized. 3. Nahuatl Honorification In its most basic form, the Nahuatl honorific marker is tzin., which may also be used as a diminutive. This suffix is generally attached to nouns and is also a subpart of an element referred to as an honorific postposition. It is also involved in a few of the verbal honorification constructions, although other verb forms, such as the causative, are generally used to create honorific meanings. 3.1 Nouns Generally speaking, Nahuatl nouns are formed of a stem and a so-called 'absolutive' suffix, which takes the various allomorphs tl, -tli, -li, and in, based on the class membership of the various noun stems. 8. a-tl (Sullivan. 1988. 16) Water-ABS Water Mollman 8

Absolutive sometimes also goes away with honorification, along with pejoratives, diminutives and augmentatives. In their simplest form, however, honorific nouns are also formed with an absolutive suffix, which follows the honorific suffix, which attaches directly to the stem. Notice that in example 2, although the noun totol turkey requires the absolutive allomorph in in its basic form, the tl allomorph is used after the honorific marker. tl, which appears to be the most common absolutive, is always used after tzin. Because tzin tends to attach directly to the noun stem, only allowing other affixes to attach after, it is probably appropriate to class it as a nominal derivational suffix. The honorific nominal suffix, then, determines the appropriate absolutive allomorph, changing the noun class of the root noun. However, there are some nouns which seem to not take an absolutive suffix in either their plain form or honored form. These are frequently proper nouns and endearments directly addressing the listener, as given below: 18. Huehue huehue-tzin (Sullivan. 19) Old man old man-HON Old man Revered old man 19. Moteuczoma Moteuczoma-tzin (Sullivan. 20) Moctezuma Moctezuma.HON Moctezuma Honorable Moctezuma Based on these examples, it may appear as if the absolutive is not used in conjunction with the vocative. However, according to Sullivan (41), the vocatives do in fact take absolutive suffixation, so it seems that there is another constraint at work in these examples. It is likely that the stems do not select for absolutives, especially in the case of proper nouns, and so although tzin selects for its absolutive tl, it does not override the noun stem. More research will have to be done to clarify this phenomenon. Plural honorification involves a partial reduplication of the honorific suffix tzin, making it -tzi-tzin. The plural absolutive marker for all honorific nouns is tin, which is one of four plural allomorphs of the absolutive utilized in making other nouns plural. As with the singular absolutive suffixes, no matter which plural a nonhonorific noun may use, the honorific version will use tin as its absolutive. 20. Because possessives and absolutives are mutually exclusive the absolutive plural tin is replaced with the possessive plural huan, while the partially reduplicated derivational honorific nominal suffix tzi-tzin remains intact, demonstrating that the reduplication is specifically triggered by the syntactic feature 'plural', not by the absolutive allomorph -tin. Two examples with differing possessors are observed here: 22. In-tla-tzin (Sullivan. 29) 3.SG.POSS-uncle-HON Their honorable uncle 23. The ca- affix in the construction illustrated in 24 has been described by authors such as Sullivan (19) simply as a ligature which is apparently meaningless, yet a necessary connector piece in certain forms, and optional in others. The t- appearing before this ligature is not commented on in any of my sources. Examples are as given below: 24. Ilama-tca-tzin-tli (Sullivan. 21) Old.woman-TCA-HON-ABS Honored old woman 25. Huehue-tca-tzi-tzin-tin Old man-TCA-HON.PL-HON-ABS.PL Honored old men Referring back to 18 and comparing it with 25, it becomes clear is an instance where ca is optional. Hill and Hill (2009. p.c.) confirm that the sequence ca does not have any meaning in Classical Nahuatl, in their experience. Perhaps it is a linguistic fossil from a previous generation. Mollman 11
The alleged ligature ca- is also necessary in the formation of honorifics from nouns using the derivational suffixes -e and hua. These two suffixes are homosemes, both producing a noun which denotes one who possesses the original noun stem. e and hua attach to the stem, directly preceding ca- in honorific constructions. 26. Tlal-e-ca-tzin-tli (Sullivan. 95) Land-NOM.OWN-CA-HON-ABS Honored owner of land 27. Some are derived, such as example 28 below and others are apparently monomorphemic, as in example 29. Tlacuilo-ca-tzin-tli (Sullivan. 96) Painter-CA-HON-ABS Honored painter 3.2 Postpositions Like the possessive markers, the postposition co, or c after vowels, attaches to nominal stems without the absolutive suffix. It is described as being in the class of postpositions which combine only with nouns, not possessive pronominal prefixes, as other postpositions. (Sullivan. 119) 30. tlatil-co (Sullivan. 120) Mound-in/on In/on the mound As one would expect, -co can be added to the nonabsolutive form of honorific nouns as well as regular noun stems as in 31 below. co, meaning in, within, inside, on, through, in the time of (Sullivan. 109), Mollman 12
is not in complementary distribution with the possessive markers (see 32). However, -co can only be attached to nouns, not pronominal prefixes. 31. Mi-tzin-co (Sullivan. 136) Arrow-HON-PP On the little arrow 32. M-ixpan-tzin-co 2.SG.POSS-presence-HON-PP In your (honorable) presence Sullivan makes a few interesting points relating to examples such as those given above. First, she consistently glosses plain nouns with the honorific postposition construction with little, a diminutive meaning rather than honorific meaning (refer to 31). She also states that words like these are frequently place names, although she does not give an example of a place name with this construction. For the possessed noun examples she gives, which are taken from actual texts, she does not gloss them as honorific or diminutive, instead she only glosses the meaning of the rest of the construction, leaving the reader to exercise their own judgement about what the relevent reading of the -tzin may be. One might guess that because the possessive prefixes directly reference a person, the possessor is the object of honorification. Sullivan also treats the resulting form tzinco as an honorific, or perhaps diminutive, postposition, rather than a case of the nominal postposition co attaching to an honorific noun (126). This is probably because tzinco can attach to the end of nouns or pronouns already containing postpositions, as seen in example 33. 33. No-pal-tzin-co (Sullivan.137) 1.SG.POSS-for-HON-PP For me (HON) Sullivans treatment of tzinco as a monomorphemic postposition seems logical because multiple Nahuatl postpositions can be found attached to a single noun, one on top of the other. It seems much less likely for there to be interruptions in the sequence of postpositions, however it also seems that tzinco is not a monomorphemic unit. There is a clear break between the honorific marker and the sequence co, Mollman 13
which is a common postposition elsewhere. One possible solution to the problem would be if tzin is actually a nominalizer, then attaching it to a postpositional phrase could make it eligible for another postposition to attach to the nominal phrase. If tzin is a nominalizer, then it would select for and attach to certain types of stems, rather than multiple kinds. Thus, it should either precede or follow all of the postpositions acting as a single unit on the stem. Hill and Hill (p.c.) suggest that because many Nahuatl postpositions are historically nouns, they retain behavior characteristic of noun stems. This may also explain why they are frequently used in possessive constructions, such as in example 33 above. If this is the case, then pal is in fact a noun, possessed with the first person possessive prefix. Thus no-pal is nothing more than a possessed noun, rather than a postpositional phrase, resolving the issue of tzin interrupting the sequence of postpositions. 3.3 Verbs Being a polysynthetic language, Nahuatl is characterized by complex verbal morpho-syntax and noun incorporation. A typical verb will consist of incorporated noun prefixes for all of the arguments, the verb stem, followed by any derivational suffixes and then inflectional affixes such as tense and aspect. Incorporated pronominal arguments may be subjects, objects and reflexives, which I will discuss in detail later because of their special significance in honorific morpho-syntax. The subject pronouns, which are typically the first morpheme of a verb, are as follows (Sullivan. 31): Ni- 1 st person singular Ti- 1 st person plural Ti- 2 nd person singular Am-/an- 2 nd person plural - 3 rd person singular - 3 rd person plural The object prefixes directly follow the subject, unless the verb is reflexive, in which case the reflexive pronoun generally precedes it. According to Sullivan (33), the prefixes for accusative and dative objects are the same and the dative prefix will usually be expressed before the accusative, although the order is actually governed by person, rather than the direct, indirect object distinction. This noun is introduced outside of the main verb form, generally introduced by the particle in. 34. Ni-c-cua in tlaxcal-li. (Sullivan. 32) 1.SG.SUBJ-3.SG.OBJ-eat IN tortilla-ABS I eat the tortilla. (lit. I eat it the tortilla) Nahuatl combines reflexive morphology with other valence-increasing derivational morphology to mark honorification. These constructions will be outlined in the next section. 3.3.1 Reflexives According to Sullivan (34), Nahuatl Reflexives are formed simply by means of pronominal prefixes on the verb, given below: No- 1 st person singular To- 1 st person plural Mo- 2 nd person singular/plural, 3 rd person singular/plural Ne- passive/impersonal These prefixes directly follow the appropriate subject pronoun. For this reason, the fact that all of the definite second and third person reflexives are the same does not cause a problem. Since the subject pronoun is necessary in these constructions, it clears up any ambiguity that may arise. 35. Ti-mo-tema (Sullivan. 34) 2.SG.SUBJ-2.SG.REFL-bathe You bathe yourself. According to Sullivan, ne- is used with passive transitive verbs and impersonal reflexive or reciprocal verbs (75, 78). It is apparently not used for honorific constructions because it would be semantically strange to honor an unspecified argument. The plural reflexive pronouns are also used as reciprocal Mollman 15
pronouns. In transitive verbs definite object prefixes come before the reflexive, separating it from the subject prefix. 36. Ti-quin-to-tlatocatia in Mexica (Sullivan. 35) 1.PL.SUBJ-3.PL.OBJ -1.PL.REFL-regard.as.ruler IN Mexicans We regard the Mexicans as (our) rulers. The indefinite object prefixes te- and tla- directly follow the reflexive prefix. 37. Ni-no-tla-maca. (Sullivan. 35) 1.SG.SUBJ-1.SG.REFL-OBJ.INDEF.INAN-give I give myself something. Reflexives serve to co-index the subject and object of the verb, indicating that they are the same person. This generally means that the object, if there is one, is identical to the subject. It is understood that the subject performs an action directly upon itself or its body part(s). Sometimes they are also used in verbs expressing internal emotions or thoughts, such as regard as ruler above, which is never found without reflexive morphology. Honorific transitive verbs retain their independent objects, in spite of having added a reflexive pronoun to the construction. Intransitive verbs only have objects by virtue of their being supplemented with valence-increasing morphology. In both transitive and intransitive verbs, it is the newly introduced object which is co-indexed with the honored subject. This pattern contributes to the semantics of honorification in Nahuatl, as reflexives add a sense that an action is done by oneself to oneself directly. In any case, it is the combination of these two things, the reflexive pronoun and verb-specific verbal morphology, that produces an honorific verb. 3.3.2 Applicatives The usual function of an applicative is to add an internal object argument to the verb, thus making intransitives transitive and transitives ditransitive. Applicative verbs usually carry the basic sense that something is done because of another person. It may be that the person, which is the direct object in Nahuatl, has been benefitted by or was the motivation for the action. In addition to this benefactive sense, it can also have a malefactive meaning if the action is a detriment to the object. Mollman 16
Applicatives are generally formed by suffixing lia or its allomorphs to the stem of the verb, as in the following: 38. Ni-c-tla-qua-lia in no-ta-tzin (Carochi. 2001. 243) 1.SG.SUBJ-INDEF.OBJ.INAN-eat-APP IN 1.SG.POSS-father-HON I eat something of my fathers, lit: "I eat my father something" or "I eat something on/for my father Notatzin,"my father," which is the noun denoted by the indirect object c-, has been added to the argument structure of the verb as a new object. The usual arguments include the subject pronoun ni-, I, the argument who is eating, and the direct indefinite object tla-, that which is eaten. In addition to sometimes having meaning change, verbs in the applicative are subject to a series of morpho- phonological rules governing the alteration of suffixes and sometimes the stem, which is a common occurrence in Nahuatl. The rules Carochi (243-253) describes are listed below: o Verbs ending in i take the basic form lia o Verbs ending in ci (/si/) change to xi (/i/) before adding the lia o Verbs ending in ia drop the final a before adding lia, this includes verbs with the causative suffix tia o Verbs ending in ya lose the ya before adding lia (provided that the y is consonantal, which is sometimes ambiguous due to orthographic variation) o Verbs ending in tla and tza drop this segment and add chilia (This is how Carochi describes the rule, however it is seems obvious that the chi is a case of the final a changing to an I before the usual lia suffix, apparently common in Nahuatl, and subsequent palatalization of the onset consonant.) o Verbs ending in the (verbalizer) oa drop the oa before adding huia, rather than -lia o Some verbs ending in the (verbaliizer) oa preceded by l may take alhuia or ilhuia o Some verbs may take multiple forms, as in the case of itoa, to say, which may be italhuia or ilhuia in the applicative.
Besides the rules stated above, there are different rules for the construction of applicatives from reflexives. In particular, applicatives of reflexives use the special reflexive pronoun ne-, discussed previously. 39. This is distinguished from reflexive applicatives which have an honorific usage and use the regular reflexive prefixes. Both forms co-index the reflexive and the subject. This interaction between reflexive and honorific will be discussed in the following section. 3.3.3 Honorifics using the Applicative form The applicative form coupled with the reflexive pronoun for honorification, gives the sense that the subject is the one who directly causes or benefits from the action and could be glossed as he does this for himself. Everything is done by them and for them. The intuition is that nothing is motivated by an external entity because they are in a sense, above that. Because of their high status only they are responsible for their actions. According to Sullivan (185), to form the honorific, most transitive and a few intransitive verbs add the applicative suffixes (i)lia or (l)huia onto the verb stem as well as the appropriate reflexive pronoun. The following are some transitive examples of honorific applicatives. 40. -mo-tlali-lia. (Sullivan. 185) 3.SG.SUBJ-3.SG.REFL-place-APP He honorably places (something). (tlalia 'place') 41. -m-ita-lhuia. 3.SG.SUBJ-3.SG.REFL-speak-APP He honorably speaks (itoa 'speak'). 42. -mo-chihua-lti(a)-lia. 3.SG.SUBJ-3.SG.REFL-do-CAUS-APP He honorably makes somebody do something.
As is common in Nahuatl, there are many variations in honorific formation, even within the already narrow scope of applicative-formed honorifics. Intransitives formed by the verbalizing suffix ti (Sullivan. 159) also take the applicative in forming honorific verbs. The ti suffix is quite productive, attaching itself onto nouns, adjectives, adverbs and even numerals to form verbs which denote the state of being the meaning of the root word.

Other intransitives forming their honorific forms using the applicative include some of those ending in oa. The oa is replaced by the applicative morphology in these formations, as example 44. demonstrates with the verb teponazoa below: 44. -mo-teponaci-lhuia (Sullivan. 185) 3.SG.SUBJ-3.SG.REFL-play the teponaztli drum- APP He honorably plays the teponaztli drum. For applicative honorifications of applicatives, the suffix lia is added and the final a of the applicative suffix already on the verb stem is omitted. Because the final -a is frequently dropped, it seems likely that the stem already excludes the final a, but it is as of yet unclear what else thata may be. 45. -te-tla-mo-piya.li-lia. (Sullivan. 186) 3.SG.SUBJ-3.AN.INDEF.OBJ-3.INAN.INDEF.OBJ-3.SG.REFL-guard.APP-APP/HON He honorably guards something for somebody. 46. -te-tla-mo-yeca-lhui-lia. 3.SG.SUBJ-3.AN.INDEF.OBJ-3.INAN.INDEF.OBJ-3.SG.REFL-finish-APPL-APP/HON To finish something for somebody. 3.3.4 Causatives Like the applicative, the causative also serves to add another argument to the verb but there is a difference in meaning: the applicative adds an object, while a causative adds a subject. In a Nahuatl causative verb, the added object is a person whom the subject has made to perform an action. The simplest form of the causative is tia it, used primarily for intransitive verbs. It too is subject to considerable allomorphy and sometimes triggers stem adjustment. The rules according to Carochi (235- 241) are listed below: o Intransitives use tia or -ltia if the stem ends in a o Verbs ending in -oa lose their a prior to adding ltia. o Verbs ending in -ni s lose their i before adding altia, another common causative allomorph. (This may be yet another case of the apparent i/-a alternation) Mollman 19
o Verbs ending in either ca (/ka-/) or qui (/ki-/) change this ending to either quiltia (/- kiltia/) or quiitia (/-kiitia/). The rule governing which of these endings is seemingly unclear. o Verbs ending in a (/sa-/) or ci (/si-/) will change to xa (/a-/) or xi (/i-/) before adding tia.
The causatives of transitive verbs are formed using the passive construction and/or by adding -ltia to the stem. The following rules alter their form: o Transitives using passive verbs ending in o replace the o with tia. o Verbs ending in -qui (/-ki/) use either the regular passive or add ltia. These two forms are in free variation: nequi, to want, may use the causative? nectia or nequiltia. o There are lots of irregulars Also, causatives of reflexive verbs use the special impersonal reflexive pronoun ne- in their causative. As in the applicative reflexive, this distinguishes these forms from the honorific reflexive causatives, which will be discussed in the next section. Verbs derived from nouns with ti/-tia and verbs formed from yotl nouns plus the verbalizer oa have no causative forms. 3.3.5 Honorifics using Causative form Again, in causative-formed honorific verbs, the necessary reflexive pronoun co-indexes the subject and the object, making them the same person. The resultant meaning is that the honored person is making himself perform actions. Again, there is no external source imposing its will upon the object of the verb. This type of honorification could be glossed as he causes himself to do this. In Nahuatl, the causative form of the verb, which uses the suffixes tia or ltia, is usually used to form honorifics of intransitive verbs, though I assume that when the appropriate morpho-phonological triggers are present, they are subject to the allomorphy discussed previously. 47. -mo-polihui-tia. (Sullivan.184) 3.SG.SUBJ-3.SG.REFL-be.destroyed-CAUS He is honorably destroyed. 48. -mo-tlachiya-ltia. 3.SG.SUBJ-3.SG.REFL-watch-CAUS He honorably watches. Mollman 20
Some transitive verbs use the causative instead of the applicative. 49. -mo-tolol-tia. (Sullivan. 185) 3.SG.SUBJ-3.SG.REFL-swallow-CAUS He honorably swallows. 50. -m-iyohui-tia. 3.SG.SUBJ-3.SG.REFL-Get tired-CAUS He honorably gets tired. Sullivan lists these two verbs in the transitive category, in spite of the fact that they do not seem to have objects marked on them. Presumably, this is because these are incomplete forms used only for demonstrating the honorific morpho-syntax. As noted above, Sullivan uses these very basic forms as a sort of infinitive, leaving off the subject, object and tense prefixes and leaving the derivational morphology. Because the third person subject prefix is null, it is identical to this form and usually glossed as such. 3.3.6 Irregulars In addition to the transitives which take the causative form and the intransitives which take the applicative form, there are a number of irregular verbs which do not fit into a general category. Miqui, to die, in example 51 has two possible forms, both irregular. It seems that it can take either a causative or applicative suffix. 52 seems to show some sequences reminiscent of both the causative (-ti) and the applicative (-lia). The two forms differ only slightly, one being more phonologically complex, and the other most likely being a simplification of it. Example 53 is apparently just irregular. 3.3.7. Reflexive Verbs which are reflexive prior to honorification take on a different form, presumably due to the fact that other honorifics also use reflexive prefixes and therefore need to be distinguished from them. Reflexive verbs use the honorific marker tzinoa, which is most likely made up of the honorific nominalizer tzin and the verbalizing suffix -oa. These two suffixes attach to the past perfect verb form, which drops its initial o-. There is no change in the pronominal prefixes for the honorific form because both forms utilize the reflexive pronominal prefixes. Since this form is nominalized and then verbalized again, it is likely that the inflectional reflexive pronouns are not present on the embedded verb, as it would be strange to have a nominal with internal inflectional morphology. They are probably added after the final verbalizing suffix. (Heidi Harley. 2009. p.c.) 54. -mo-coco-tzin-oa (Sullivan. 186) 3.SG.SUBJ-3.SG.REFL-be ill-HON-VBZ He is honorably ill 55. -mo-cui-tzin-oa 3.SG.SUBJ-3.SG.REFL-be respected-HON-VBZ He is honorably respected 3.3.8 Intensified The suffix, or set of suffixes, described above, tzinoa can also be used as an intensifier for verbs which are already in the honorific form, as example 34 demonstrates. 56. -mo-tlacati-li-tzin-oa (Sullivan. 186) 3.SG.SUBJ-3.SG-REFL-be born-APP-HON-VBZ He is very honorably born Again, I assume that -tzinoa is added to the verb before any inflectional suffixes, though it seems to delete the final a of the derivational applicative and causative suffixes, thus present in the honorific verbs. The example here shows the a replaced by a glottal stop. Due to unfortunate discrepancies in the literature, glottal stops, along with vowel length distinctions, are sometimes omitted in transcription. Mollman 22
Because they use regular verbal endings, honorific verbs can be conjugated in any form just like other verbs. Those that end in tzinoa act as other verbs ending in oa and all other honorific verbs are regular, as demonstrated by a few examples below 57. Ni-mitz-on-no-piye-li(a)-li 1.SG.SUBJ-2.SG.OBJ-away-1.SG.REFL-have/guard-APP-APP/HON I have guarded for you That is, honorific verbs may have a relatively complex underlying structure, yet they are completely productive, acting just as any other verb stem. In the following sections I present data and analysis on Japanese, an agglutinative language also exhibiting a complex grammaticized honorific system. Japanese is a well-studied language with an honorific system that has already been discussed and treated in multiple ways syntactically. After reviewing several studies on Japanese honorification, I will apply the tools used in these analyses to the Nahuatl system described previously. 4. An Overview of Japanese Honorification Japanese is a language well-known for its complex honorification system. There are two ways to form honorific verbal constructions in Japanese. First, honorification can be achieved simply by forming the passiveor a form perfectly homophonous with the passiveby the suffixation of rareru, an Mollman 23
auxiliary used in subject honorification, according to Ivanna and Sakai (172). This form is relatively uninteresting syntactically because it behaves exactly like the passive. The other method uses the basic honorific prefix marker o-, which generally attaches to nouns, in two different constructions based on whether one means to honor the subject of the sentence or the object. According to Harada (1976. 504) these two structures are as follows: Subject Honorification: HP+INF ni naru Object Honorification: HP+INF suru/itasu The naru of subject honorification is a common intransitive verb signifying to become and the suru and itasu of object honorification is transitive, meaning to do. 61. Gichoo-wa kaigi-wo chuushi shi-ta. (Ivana and Sakai. 172) Chairman-TOP meeting-ACC interruption do-PST The chairman interrupted the meeting. 62. Kaigi-ga chuushi-ni nat-ta. Meeting-NOM interruption-OBL become.PST The meeting was interrupted. In addition to these productive forms of honorification, there is also a series of suppletive verbs, generally Sino-Japanese, which are used only in honorific speech. Some of the suppletive forms completely block usage of the productive constructions shown above, while others seem to be in free distribution Because it is much more commonly studied than is Nahuatl, some work has been done describing and analyzing the syntax of Japanese honorifics. I will refer to three major pieces of literature attempting to account for the Japanese honorification phenomena. One major syntactic issue in Japanese object honorification is the fact that the accusative object may not be the object of honorification in the presence of a second, dative object. Boeckx and Niinuma (2004) describe Japanese honorification as an Agreement mechanism in which the presence of an intervening dative element has a blocking effect, denying the possibility of the syntactically lower accusative as the object of honorification. They claim that this is similar to indirect-object blocking Mollman 24
effects in other languages such as French and Icelandic. Bobaljik and Yatsushiro (2006) disagree, stating that honorification in Japanese is not simply an agreement mechanism, with the indirect object taking precedence over the direct object for purely syntactic reasons. They propose instead a light verb construction where the o- honorific prefix also serves to nominalize the infinitive verb form, to which either the suru or ni naru light verb is added. This mirrors other well-known light-verb constructions in Japanese and is the commonly accepted structural analysis of the construction. 63. Japanese Tree
It also accounts nicely for the alternation between subject and object honorification, as the light verb for the subject honorific is transitive suru and object honorification takes intransitive naru, which consistently selects the particle -ni on its complement. Ivanna and Sakai expound upon this idea, proving the existence of three different versions (dummy, light and full) of the verbs suru and naru in Japanese. They prove that honorific constructions take the light verb version. However, the issues raised by Boeckx and Niinuma concerning honorification in multiple-object sentences are thus far left unaddressed by this approach. Mollman 25
5. Connections to Japanese Honorification This paper attempts to evaluate the Classical Nahuatl system in light of some previous studies in honorification. Following is a discussion of the extant issues in Japanese Honorification according to the above literature and how they may or may not relate to the Classical Nahuatl system. 5.1 On Honorific Markers and Nominalization Both Nahuatl and Japanese have an affixal honorific marker which may also serve as a nominalizer. Japanese has the prefix o- (alternatively, go- for Sino-Japanese words), which attaches onto basic nouns and adjectives in addition to a non-finite verb form which Ivana and Sakai is already a viable independent noun (185). O- is particularly prevalent in womens speech. This, referred to as bikago in Japanese and sometimes called 'beautified speech' in English, tends to make the speech more feminine or polite (Ivana and Sakai). In addition to this optional 'beautifying' usage, there is a set of nouns, including o-sake, sake, liquor, and o-cha, tea, in Japanese that are rarely found without the o- prefix in anyones speech. Assuming the light-verb analysis is correct, the o- serves to add honorific meaning to the already nominalized verb. Nahuatl has two affixes which can contribute honorific meaning to a sentence. As described above, -tzin is a nominal suffix which can be either honorific or diminutive. It is also used in some verbal constructions where, like Japanese o-, it apparently acts as a nominalizer. Nahuatls other honorific, on-, has both an honorific and beautified speech usage in addition to its literal meaning. This particle is used in three main ways, according to Sullivan. First, it is used to add elegance. It can also add emphasis or intensify the meaning of a construction. Last, it is used to signify distance or duration. It follows the subject, and definite object in transitive verbs, however it precedes indefinite objects and reflexives (46-47). What Sullivan does not mention is that this particle can be used to add honorification as well (Hill and Hill, p.c.). Given the elegance and distancing usages that Sullivan does provide, it seems Mollman 26
quite natural that it could be used as an honorific marker as well. Because its usage is not limited to honorification however, it is also normal for it to be used in conjunction with the first person Japanese o- is used primarily on nouns and adjectives. In contrast, Nahuatl on- is used on verbs only for honorific or literal distance-related purposes, not beautified speech. The literature consulted for this paper, including Carochi and Sullivan primarily, does not delve deeply into the use of on- in an honorific sense, leaving gaps in my knowledge about where and when it is used. There are examples, such as below, where it is used multiple times with multiple meanings within the same word and sentence. 64. O--c-om-m(o)-on-tla-t-i-li(a)-que (Sullivan. 187) PERF-3.SG.SUBJ-OBJ-away-3.PL.REFL-away-tla-t-i-APP-PL 4
(our lords) have hidden (something) While the example given above is unfortunately incomplete, it still clearly demonstrates this phenomenon. Hill and Hill (p.c.) claim that the second instance of on- is a literal usage in regard to physical distance, referring to the lords act of hiding something. The first on-, which demonstrates nasal place assimilation, serves to distance the subject in a more figurative sense, thus producing another respectful meaning in addition to the applicative-reflexive pronoun structure, which is also seen here as subject honorification. There are a number of curious examples of strange honorific noun tzin forms, such as totol-tzin, honored turkey. They may be examples of using honorific speech in the presence of a social superior, thus acting as a part of the honorific register rather than agreement. It is also possible that these semantically interesting honorific forms have diminutive meanings in this context, otherwise they may be being used by a recipient to honor the giver (or possessor) of the honorable turkey, as a way of showing esteem and gratitude for the gift, according to Hill and Hill. Japanese has its own set of strange honorific nouns, but they are quite different, including a series of specific words taking the prefix o-,

such as o-sake, which are not dependent upon any specific register, honorific or otherwise. Some of them are very literal and some seem more ironic or perhaps sarcastic, but they are all very rarely, if ever, found without the honorific prefix. These may or may not exist in Classical Nahuatl. 5.3 On the Borrowing of Structures To some extent, both Japanese and Nahuatl Honorification depend on the extended, perhaps metaphorical, use of other derivational or inflectional constructions within the language 5 . One of the Japanese constructions is exactly like the passive, which is also a derivational construction. Alternatively, the use of the light-verb construction is common in Japanese, particularly with VP-fronting and verbs derived from Sino-Japanese roots, where it is common to treat the borrowed word as a noun and produce a verbal form with the addition of the verbs suru and (-ni) naru, the same ones seen in honorific examples here. In these cases, the light verb can produce a transitive or intransitive construction depending on which light-verb is chosen. In honorific light-verb constructions, subject or object honorification can be achieved depending on whether one chooses the transitive suru or intransitive naru, mirroring the other light-verb structures of Japanese. (Ivana and Sakai. 180) Nahuatls seemingly most widespread methods of honorification are based upon the derivational constructions of the causative and the applicative, requiring the addition of the reflexive pronominal prefixes to produce an honorific meaning. Thus, the formula is REFL-V-CAUS and REFL-V- APP for basic transitive and intransitive verbs. There is also the formula for producing intensified honorifics or honorifics from reflexives; V-HON-VBZ. Both the causative and applicative serve to add an argument to the verb and the reflexives co-index this argument with the subject. Unlike Japanese, which uses alternative light verbs based on subject versus object honorification, but disregards the transitivity of the base verb, Nahuatl honorific verbal suffixes change form based on whether the initial verb is transitive, intransitive or reflexive. Both involve valence alternations, however; the Japanese

alternations choose a different basic light-verb in the same construction while Nahuatl alternations use an entirely different valence-altering structure from the language, causatives, applicatives or another form using the honorific marker, which is apparently unique to verbs which are reflexive before honorification and intensified versions of verbs which are already honorific. The reflexive and intensified construction is particularly interesting in this instance because it involves the addition of a nominalizing honorific marker and is subsequently verbalized with the addition of -oa. This closely mirrors the Japanese honorification methods, which instead of a verbalizing suffix, use a separate lightverb to complete the form. There is also the passive form version of honorification in Japanese, which is a suffix on the verb rather than a light verb. In Nahuatl, the structure for reflexives is also used for intensifying the reverence on already honored verbal constructions, which is perhaps similar to the passivization method of Japanese in that reflexivization and passivization are often related strategies, cross-linguistically. 5.4 On the Syntax of Honorific Constructions As we have seen, syntactic honorification in Japanese utilizes a light verb construction characterized by appending a transitive or intransitive light verb onto a nominalized and honored verb stem, assuming Ivana and Sakai and Bobaljik and Yatsushiros analyses. Because of Nahuatls polysynthetic nature, this will take on a form different from that of Japanese. Essentially, Japaneses light verb is a separate verb in its own right. According to Ivana and Sakai,both suru and naru are free morphemes which can act as full verbs, light verbs or dummy verbs. In the case of honorification, they are specifically light verbs (179). In contrast, Nahuatls light verb is actually a purely causative affix attaching onto the main verb rather than a free morpheme. Regardless of this difference in affixation of the light verb, the honorification structures for these languages will look similar in syntactic trees, such as those given below. The first example is that of a Japanese tree demonstrating object honorification.

Notice that the honorific marker o- is not in the correct position in the tree. The V must rise by head movement to attach to the H-head, which then attaches to it as a prefix. This tree structure for honorifics, proposed by Ivana and Sakai, depends on the honorific item, o- in this case, necessarily c- commanding the honored object. 6 This basic structure can be extended to apply to the Nahuatl constructions involving the honorific marker tzin, which corresponds in function to Japanese o-:

66. Nahual reflexive honorification:
One thing to note about this tree, as opposed to the Japanese version above, is the embedded noun phrase housing the main verb. In the Japanese version, Ivana and Sakai, have glossed this as [REN], standing for renryookei, the nominal form of the verb. If this is the case, than o- is not a nominalizer as in Nahuatl, but acts solely as an honorific affix. As of now, there is no evidence proving a similar analysis for Nahuatl. For the purpose of this paper, we have assumed that tzin is a nominalizing suffix. However, it is conceivable that the Nahuatl verb root may also be used as a nominal. The fact that it is added to clearly verbal forms, such as already honored verbs, and is followed by oa, a denominal verbalizer, supports the claim that unlike Japaneses o-, -tzin acts as a nominalizer. The structure Ivana and Sakai proposed is not appropriate for instances of causative or applicative honorification, as their honorific reading is derived from the interaction of two separate constructions within the language. Since they do not demonstrate a specific honorific marker, it is ineffective to analyze them using a separate honorific projection. Instead, they should be treed as regular instances of causatives and applicatives. A typical causative may be expressed as following: 67. Nahuatl Causative: 7
Notice that, while the causative suffix tia is a derivational suffix, rather than a true light verb, it occupies the light verb projection, adding another external argument to the structure. At this point, the only change necessary to produce an honorific form is to use a reflexive pronoun in place of the second person singular object of this tree. This will co-index the subject and the object added by the causative. In doing this, we actually eliminate one of the people referred to, but not an argument because the subject is now acting upon itself. An honorific tree formed from the causative is given below:

In a causative of a transitive verb, there would have to be two little-v projections, one for the verb, and one for the causative. This does not happen in Nahuatl honorification because the applicative form is used for transitive verb honorification. 68. Nahuatl intransitive honorific.
So, honorification is structured exactly as a normal causative. In combining it with specific reflexive pronouns which do not actually alter the structure, we gain the honorific meaning. For this reason, it is probable that there are more literal usages for this combination. For instance, a nonhonorific sentence such as mo-cochi-tia, he wakes himself up, is semantically and conceivably syntactically possible. The Nahuatl causative construction has a little bit in common with Japanese subject honorification, given the use of suru, which behaves like tia in adding another external argument. The main difference lies in the absence of reflexivization in Japanese honorification. However, ireflexivization, passivization and nominalization have one thing in common they can all involve eliminating true external arguments. Applicatives behave similarly yet take on a slightly different form. Using the structure found in Harley, Tubino-Blanco and Haugens (2009) discussion of Hiaki, the applicative heads its own projection. We will use a transitive verb here, as transitivity is associated with applicative honorification in Nahuatl: Mollman 33

The applicative projection is inserted between the transitive-subject-selecting the little v, which is null in this case, and the main verb phrase, where the object is base-generated 8 As in the causative structure, the only thing necessary to form an honorific verb is to use reflexive, rather than regular object pronouns. Thus, the structure does not change for the honorific version, in the tree as below:

If the applicative occupied the same position as the causative, this would be highly unlikely in Nahuatl, as the two are both bound morphemes. If one or the other were expressed as separate verbs it would be possible to embed one within the other. Mollman 34
70. Nahuatl transitive honorific
One thing that happens when dealing with Nahuatl reflexive pronouns is a certain amount of what appears to be movement. The rule relating to this phenomenon is that the reflexive pronoun generally follows the definite object agreement prefix (Sullivan. 35). It precedes the object prefix only when the object prefix is one of the indefinite prefixes, either tla- or te-. In this case, a string of subject-reflexive- object pronouns will look like so, ni i -no i -tla- or ni i -no i -te- However, when the third person is definite, c- /qui-, singular, or quim-/quin-, plural, it will separate the subject and reflexive pronouns like so: subject- object-reflexive ni i -c-no i -
and ni i -quin-no i -. Since these pronouns fulfill the same semantic role as internal arguments of the verb, they should originate in the same place. Clearly they do not stay in the same place; they are moved at some point. The given tree structure seems to pose a problem in this Mollman 35
case, since this pronoun must move to reach the surface form, however there is no open place for it to move into. Similarly, there is no clear place for the reflexive pronoun to move down into in order to gain the proper morpheme order. It may be that the morphemes change order at spellout. Alternatively, it could be that the change in position is motivated by conditions on the syntax/semantics interface. In some languages, definite (but not indefinite) objects move out of the vP/VPIcelandic and German for example (Diesing 1990; Bobaljik &Jonas 1996). Perhaps the same thing is happening with Nahuatl pronouns, where definite pronouns move to a specifier projection above ApplP but below the surface position of the subject, below spec-TP. For an intensified verb, one must embed an honorific verb within thetzinoa construction as if it were a reflexive verb. Interestingly, this means that there will be inflectional reflexive morphology inside of derivational morphology, which is very rare cross-linguistically. 5.5. On Usage- SH OH, in presence of speaker, 1 st person usage Japanese honorification is used both in the presence of someone socially superior to the speaker and when their superior is one of the arguments of the verb. Japanese also has a phenomenon of polite versus casual speech. Two students may speak about a teacher using honorific constructions with casual verbal endings, provided that the teacher is not present. When speaking directly to the teacher, they will opt for the polite forms in addition to honorific constructions. This can be seen as an interaction between honorific agreement with the referent and addressee honorifics. It is unclear whether Nahuatls system behaves in such a way, but it is likely that with or without syntactic honorification, there are certain ways to speak more politely. Nahuatl may have a grammatically constrained honorific register, such as the Japanese system, or it may not. It may be that honorification can be used both in the presence of and in direct reference to a social superior. In the case of Nahuatl, there is evidence for the latter in explicit syntactic honorification, yet I have not found examples indicating the existence of a honorific register reserved for addressees. Another issue in honorific usage is which person the honorific can be formed in. Particularly, it is strange to honor oneself, thus making first person honorifics unlikely in general. In Japanese, it is not generally possible to honor the self, whereas in Nahuatl, we have already seen some cases where the first person is used in conjunction with honorification. Example 33 is the honorific postpositional phrase no-pal-tzin-co, for me (Hon). [It is as of yet unclear where the honorification in this structure is directed. It is possible that this is a case of the honorific register, where one is speaking in the presence of a social superior. Since this form is not found in a complete sentence, it is impossible to tell the context, how the phrase connects to the main verb and who, if anyone, is honored in the verb. Nahuatl would not seem to have any sort of difficulty with intervention effects involving dative versus accusative honorification, because the dative is co-indexed with the subject in most forms. This is consistent with the situation in Japanese, since the highest internal argument is co-indexed with the subject, not the lower arguments. In any case, subject honorification honors the dative by minimality- respecting effects of reflexivization. The following example, along with 60 above, demonstrate object honorification: 71. Ni i -c-no i -cui-ti-huechi-lia (Carochi. 245) 1.SG.SUBJ-3.SG.OBJ-1.SG.REFL-take-??-fall-APPL I knock into his grace in haste! Notice that there is absolutely no change in form between subject and object honorification in Nahuatl. Despite the object honoring meaning, the reflexive is still co-indexed with the subject, rather than the object, which would seem to make more sense. 5.6. On the Possibility of Agreement Japanese has very little agreement. There are a few instances of animate versus inanimate verbs, however person and number are never marked in the verb and only rarely in nouns and pronouns, which are frequently subject to pro-drop and ellipsis. Boeckx and Niinuma attempted to prove that honorification is a case of agreement in Japanese, but it seems intuitively unlikely, since Japanese tends Mollman 37
to not have agreement. Nahuatls system is slightly different, partially because of its polysynthetic nature. Arguments are marked directly on the verb as pronominal prefixes. Suffixes on that verb are marked plural to agree with the arguments but person-indexing morphology other than the pronouns seems nonexistent, unless it is the case that external DP arguments are the actual syntactic arguments as in Bakers (1996) polysynthesis parameter, subject to heavy ellipsis and only present if greater specification is desired. If this is true, then the pronominal prefixes on the verb are all agreement marking. In any case, in applicative and causative honorification, there would be no more agreement marking than in regular applicative and causative constructions. That is, there is no particular agreement that sets this apart from other constructions. In the analysis presented above I have adopted the former view, following Jelineks (1988) Pronominal Argument Hypothesis. 6. Conclusions and Closing Remarks This paper has attempted to use the available resources on Classical Nahuatl literature in providing a thorough linguistic description of its multi-faceted honorification system. In addition, it has briefly reviewed Japanese literature on the topic, comparing their structures and relevant salient features. However, it is necessary to collect more Nahuatl data, especially in regard to honorific usage. Is there an honorific register for addressees in addition to referent honorification. Another major issue that remains a mystery is Nahuatls usage of on- and how it interacts with other honorific forms. Similarly, because of the complexity of the system and interaction of the various forms, it is still unclear how many levels of honorification are actually marked. In addition, it would be beneficial to know more about object honorification in Nahuatl. Most of the examples we have seen seem to demonstrate subject honorification and the ones that do exhibit object honorification do not seem to have any clear difference in structure. Of particular interest is whether there is some sort of constraint restricting accusative direct objects, as is the case in Japanese. Furthermore, in order to understand Nahuatl and Mollman 38
honorification in general, it would be useful to compare this data with more data from other languages, besides Japanese, demonstrating honorification.
