OBJECTIVE

To secure a fulltime English teaching position in grades 7-12 in a school where I can practice my
philosophy of incorporating popular culture in the classroom as a means to cultivate student
interest and motivation as well as a connective technique to teach difficult material.

! Planned, taught, and assessed for six classes, with a total of 165 students, differentiating
plans as needed for a varied range of class levels
! Taught the principles of grammar through funny Caught Ya Grammar with a Giggle
sentences as bellringer (or starter) activity
! Developed student vocabulary through weekly vocabulary lists, activities to practice using
new vocabulary, and weekly assessments
! Established a classroom economy for lower-level students as a means to both build and
reinforce positive behaviors and motivate students to succeed
! Designed and organized an entire unit on the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by
Mildred D. Taylor that I adapted for different student abilities
! Generated student connections between history and the novel by presenting
historical events from the 1930s and having students write a final paper comparing
and contrasting the 1930s to the novel
! Used SMART Board random selector to choose students to read aloud, students
could be chosen by the program multiple times
! Simulated racism and prejudice to the class by creating a project based on the blue
eye/brown eye experiment
! Fostered a student led classroom by developing literature centers where students
worked together on mini-projects throughout the room
! Produced a twitter bulletin where classes could share their thoughts about the
novel through tweets with each other
! Planned and executed a mini-unit on literary devices taught through popular culture and
transferred through practice to the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
! Used Prezi presentations utilizing video and image resources to teach each literary
device
! Organized small groups where students found literary devices together in the novel
! Designed a bulletin board where students shared their literary devices to develop a
silent conversation between themselves and other classes
! Participated in Student Council by attending meetings, participating in fundraisers, and by
planning and chaperoning school dances

! At the end of the project students wrote a paper on how they connected to Victor
Frankensteins experience of creating his monster

packet for students
