Innovative Lesson

The student teacher is teaching a class of 9th standard students about the different types of joints in the human skeletal system. The lesson introduces the five main types of joints - ball and socket, hinge, gliding, pivot, and immovable joints. Interactive activities are used to explain the characteristics of each joint, including students acting out the movements and groups presenting on the special features. Formative assessment of the students' understanding is done through review questions at the end of the class.

NAME OF THE STUDENT TEACHER :BEENA.

R STANDARD :IXA
NAME OF THE SCHOOL :ST.THOMAS HIGH SCHOOL STRENGTH :50
SUBJECT :BIOLOGY DATE :29.08.2014
UNIT :MOVEMENT AND LOCOMOTION PERIOD :2nd
TOPIC :TYPES OF JOINTS TIME :45 mts
CURRICULAR STATEMENTS
To attain knowledge that movement of the skeletal system occur actually at
the joints
To understand the function of different types of joints
To attain conceptual ideas that joints are structure where two bones are
fitted to each other and all joints are not alike.
To develop positive attitude towards the need for keeping our body healthy
LEARNING OUTCOMES
REMEMBERING The learner remembers the term'Joints'
UNDERSTANDING
The learner explains that there are 5 types of joints. They are freely
movable, ball & socket joint, hinge joint,
gliding joint & pivot joint.
APPLY
The learner applies the knowledge to keep the bones healthy through proper
diet.
ANALYSIS
The learner analyses that in our body movable joints and immovable joints
are there.
EVALUATE
The learner evaluates that ligaments are seen incide the capsule which is a
supportive sheath or envelope.
CREATE
The learner creates the idea that ball & socket joints are the most movable
joints. This allows movement in all planes.
PROCESS SKILLS
The learner develops the process skills like observation skills. The learner
observes the joint generalised structure.
ATTITUDE
The learner develops positive attitude towards maintaining a healthy bone
maintenance.
CONTENT ANALYSIS
TERMS
bone, freely movable joints, slightly movble joints, immovable joints, ball &
socket joint, hinge joint, gliding joint, pivot joint
FACTS
1. Skeleton is the basis of body structure, it forms the rigid structural
framework.
2. Bones is the body unit to form the skeletal system.
3. Skeletal system provides shape, strength and support to body.
4. Bones are able to move and function because there are bone joints.
5. Joints are structures where two bones are fitted to each other.
6. All bones are not alike. According to mobility, bones are calssified into 3-
freely movable, slightly movable and
immovable joints.
7. Freely movable joints are calssified into 4-ball & socket joint, hinge joint,
gliding joint and the pivot joint.
8. Ball and socket joints are the most movable joints.
9. Hinge joints allows movement in one plane body only.
10. In gliding joint one bone glides slightly over the flat surface of the other.
11. Pivot joint helps in the movement as though it pivots on an axis.
CONCEPTS
MAJOR Bones are fitted to each other with joints.
MINOR According to mobility, there are movable and immovable joints are there.
PRE-REQUISITES
1. The learner already know that skeleton composed of bones which form
the basis of body structure.
2. The learner know that skeletal system is arranged in such a way that it
enable us to do various kinds of works.
TEACHING-LEARNING 1. A chart showing the generalised structure of Joints
RESOURCES 2. A chart showing immovable joints of skull
3. ICT display of different types of joints
TEACHING-LEARNING INTERACTION PUPIL RESPONSES
INTRODUCTION
As part of awakening process, the teacher conducts an active discussion with
the students.
Have you noticed in your home, the door and windows are opening only in
one direction. Is it possible to move the
door on opposite side? Pupil said, 'No'
What is the reason for its movement in one direction only?
Pupil said, 'There is a
hinge joint
which will not allow
opposite
movement'
Can you think which system in our body function like door movement?
Pupil said'hand and
leg'
Teacher replied"Yes, but its an organ, can you say which is the system?" Pupil start thinking
This system gives shape and structure to the body, Teacher add this point. Skeletal system'
Yes, skeletal system composed of what? Bones
Teacher explained"Humanbody is formed on a special framework. The
framework is arranged in such a way that it
enable us to do various kinds of works. Bone is the body unit to form the
skeletal system".
Do you know how the movement of bones happen? Pupil said'No'
Teacher explained"Joints are structure where two bones are fitted to each
other.
So today we are going to study TYPES OF JOINTS(BBH)
Teacher give a detailed report"According to mobility of joints, they are
classified into 3-freely movable joints(BB),
slightly movable(BB) and immovable joints. Do you know where will be
immovable joints found? Pupil start thinking
It is in the skull. According to the shape or the kind of movement, freely
movable joints are classified into how many?
Ball & socket, hinge
joint,
Yes, but there is one more joint that is pivot joint.
gliding joint' pupil
said
see the joints in the skull.
PRESENTATION
Teacher presents a chart showing Human skeletal system and ask them to
pint out the bones in hand, leg and head.
Pupil ponited the
parts
ACTIVITY NO.1
Teacher callls 4 students and ask them to act like the 4 joints.
The whole class listen
very carefully
First student acts like ball and socket joint by rounding the hand
Second student acts like hinge joint by showing the door movement
Third student acts like gliding joint by showing shoulder
movement
Forth student acts like pivot joint
ACTIVITY NO.2
Teacher again divides the class into 4 groups and asks one group to explaine
the specialities of different types of joints
Pupil said,'allow
movement in all
Group -1 give specialities of Ball and socket with the help of slide. planes'
Group -2 give specialities of Hinge joint with the help of picture.
Group -3 give specialities of Gliding joint with the help of slide show..
Group -4 give specialities of Pivot joint.
all the groups
answered the
question
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
REVIEW QUESTIONS
1. According to mobility how many types of joints are there in our body?
2. What is the speciality of immovable joints?
FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES
Describe the importance of different types of joints for the proper
functioning of human body with the help of pictures.
