Trouble can strike at any time and
now is the time to dig deep for the annual Bacchus Marsh SES doorknock
appeal.
The units 50 volunteers will be out
and about in Moorabool Shire over the
month of February door-knocking for
the vital donations that keep the unit
running.
The funds keep us going through
the year - we receive some government
funding, but we rely heavily on donations from the community as well,
said Deputy Controller Operations Bill
Robson.
The money goes towards servicing
and maintaining equipment including
chainsaws, generators, water pumps,
road rescue equipment and vehicles

and also paying utility bills as well as
forward planning, with the unit hoping
to purchase a new rescue vehicle later
this year.
This is our major fundraiser for the
year we try and knock on every door
that we can in Moorabool Shire, and we
ask residents and businesses to donate
what they can because were a 100 per
cent volunteer emergency service for
Moorabool Shire.
Our volunteers will be out and about
during the month of February in their
spare time knocking on doors were
hoping to raise about $20,000 but were
just trying to get as much as we can;
everything goes back into the community, 100 per cent of it is spent locally
within the unit and used to assist our

volunteers to do what they do.

Its about upgrading vehicles too the
government gives us a rescue truck but
our three four-wheel -drives are all purchased through community funding.
Its about forward planning for us
too, to make sure we can provide the
community with what they need in the
future - Moorabool is one of the fastest
growing areas in terms of residential
areas in the state.
SES door-knockers will be easily identifiable as they carry official SES identification with them.

Paul Tatchell has congratulated local bookworms on
their summer reading success, after more than 800
books were read during
the fourth annual Summer
Reading Challenge.
More than 100 pre-school,
primary and secondary
aged children registered
for the challenge at Bacchus
Marsh and Ballan Libraries,

and were encouraged to continue to read throughout the
summer holidays and win
fantastic prizes.
The program offered a
great opportunity for participants to engage with our
libraries; discover and develop an understanding and
skills related to the theme
Adventure, and participate
in activities that inspire a
love of reading, literature
and libraries, Cr Tatchell

said.
Each participant who read
a total number of 10 books
went into the draw to win a
Nintendo 3DS XL, with Scarlett Rose McKay taking out
the major prize.
All participants were invited to an end-of-program
celebration, held in Bacchus
Marsh and Ballan, where
they received their participation certificates.

ONLY three towns in Moorabool have a CFA designated

Neighbourhood Safer Place
(NSP) in case of a bushfire
emergency.
CFA manager community
safety western region, Michael Boatman, said Greendale, Gordon and Darley
had NSPs, while Blackwood
had a purpose-built community fire refuge as part of the
Blackwood CFA Station.
In order to have an NSP a
community needs appropriate facilities or a hall, Mr
Boatman said.
We would encourage people as part of their bushfire
emergency planning to go to
townships where there are
NSP facilities or a lower fire
risk.
The Greendale NSP is located at Greendale Oval at
Egans Reserve, GreendaleBallan Road and is considered a place of last resort for
all residents in Greendale
and Dales Creek. Gordon
Public Hall is a designated
NSP for all residents in Gordon, while the Darley Civic
and Community Hub (oval)
is the place of last resort for

all residents in Darley.
Mr Boatman said the central business districts in
towns including Ballan and
Bacchus Marsh were as safe
as any NSP because the risk
of fire was lower.

really got to think about it
today, before theres a threat
of fire, he said.
He said a plan to leave early
was always preferable and
the CFA discouraged high
risk journeys to NSPs outside of your immediate area
during a fire.

STOMPING the turf has begun at Yaloak Estate in preparation
for The Ballarat Cup polo family day on February 15.
Yaloak Polo Club president Laurie Meyer said the event is held
just 8km south of Ballan and last year 1000 people attended the
cup and it could easily double this year.
It will be exhibition polo at its best, Mr Meyer said.
He said there would be four high quality polo games at the
Yaloak Equestrian centre which would finish with the final of
The Ballarat Cup.
Crowds will also be entertained with a horse and hound
hunting demonstration, a race between a horse, a celebrity race
car driver and a helicopter, the Creswick Lighthorse Brigade
and a grand parade of 70 Porsches by the Victorian Porsche car
club.
Children will enjoy a bouncing castle, animal farm and pony
rides.
Mr Meyer said the event would include fully catered sponsored
marquees or people could purchase barbecue food and drinks.
People can book a marquee, a field-side car park or pay a general

Indigo quilts created with
energy and prayer
AUTUMN will turn shades of indigo this March with a
Japanese quilt exhibition to be held over the Ballan Autumn
Festival weekend.
The unique exhibition will feature 29 hand-sewn quilt

masterpieces by the late Shigeko Asada, seen for the first
time in Australia and for the first time outside of Japan.
During her eight year battle with cancer, Shigeko Asada

created 50 quilts out of traditional kasuri indigo cloth.
According to her son Masato, her patchwork became a source
of energy and prayer to help her live and fight her illness.
Many people supplied her with their old cloth to use in her
patchwork. The cloth was traditionally dyed material that
was used for everyday family working kimonos.
The quilts have come to Ballan through a relationship
formed in the late 1990s between Ballan resident Jacinta
Davie and Chizuru Momoge. Mrs Davie worked as an
assistant language teacher at Yodoe junior high school in
Japan under the guidance of Mrs Momoge for three years.
Mrs Momoge was also a member of the Yodoe Red Cross
with Shigeko Asada.
Mrs Momoge said in Japan the indigo plant was as precious

as gold and was used for working or farming kimonos
because of its insect-repellent properties and because fabric
dyed with indigo wouldnt be damaged or eaten by moths.
The colour of indigo shows a life as it fades. Some of the
fabric is 150-years-old, she said.
She said an exhibition of the quilts was held over five days at
the Yonago Museum in Japan and attracted 100,000 visitors.
Shigeko Asada was the president of the Yodoe Red Cross

and did so much for people. She has so many faces, she said.

NOW OPEN - COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT FUND
The Moorabool Shire Council Community Development Fund opened on 2 February 2015.
Community groups/committees, community networks, progress groups and development
associations are invited to submit an Expression of Interest for seed funding (and leverage for
external funding opportunities) toward community infrastructure projects that have a signicant
impact on community development, liveability and wellbeing in the Shire.
Funding is available for up to $25,000 with preference given to those that demonstrate:
A contribution toward the cost of the project by cash or in-kind support,
The leveraging of funds to support external funding opportunities,
A strategic basis - the project is detailed in a community plan, master plan or strategic plan.
Groups, committees and organisations are encouraged to read the Community Development
Fund Guidelines carefully before making a submission. The Guidelines outline the specic
eligibility and assessment criteria.
Program Guidelines, Expression of Interest Forms and further information are available on

The Summer 2015 Community Grants Program is now open and will close on 28 February 2015.
Moorabool Shire Council proudly supports the wonderful contribution that our not-forprot community groups provide to their local and wider communities. Community groups
are encouraged to read the Community Grants Program Guidelines carefully before making a
submission.
Community Grants:
Grants are available for projects under the following categories:

MADDINGLEY PARK RECREATION RESERVE COMMITTEE OF MANAGEMENT

COMMUNITY REPRESENTATIVE POSITIONS (VOLUNTEER POSITIONS)
Council is seeking expressions of interest from community members to undertake Community
Representative roles on the Maddingley Park Recreation Reserve Committee of Management.
The Reserve Committee of Management is responsible for the allocation and management
of reserve usage and maintenance, whilst representing the general communities views on the
development of the reserve. Other representatives on the Committee consist of a delegate
from each of the reserve user groups and a Council appointed Chairperson.
Interested persons are encouraged to contact the Recreation Development Ofcer on
5366 7100 to discuss the role.
Nomination forms outlining applicant interest, skills and relevant experience to successfully
undertake the role can be found on Councils website. Darley Council Ofce, Lerderderg Library
and Ballan Council Ofce. Nominations must be received by Council no later than 5pm Friday,
20 February, 2015.
COMMUNITY SATISFACTION SURVEY
Council would like to inform residents that from early February to early March, your household
may receive a call from an independent market research agency, National Field Services.
The company has been commissioned to conduct a community satisfaction survey on behalf of
the council. Similar surveys will be undertaken across Victorian councils in the coming months.
The survey has been designed to assess the performance of Moorabool Shire Council across a
range of measures to identify ways to provide improvement or more effective service delivery
to residents.
We appreciate you taking the time to assist us with your valuable feedback.

RATE PAYMENTS
Ratepayers, who have not elected to pay by instalments, are reminded that payment of rates in
full must be received by 5.00pm on 16 February, 2015.
Penalty Interest will be incurred on any accounts not paid in accordance with the rate payment
due dates. Interest will accrue at 11.5% per annum. Interest will calculate on and from the date
on which each instalment would have been due, as if the account was an instalment account.

AVENUE OF HONOUR - BACCHUS MARSH
TREE INSPECTIONS AND PRUNING WORKS
Council will be undertaking aerial inspections and tree pruning works in the Bacchus Marsh
Avenue of Honour until this Friday 6 February 2015.
These important tree works will be undertaken as part of the ongoing commitment to the
Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour Strategic Management Plan.
Council periodically undertakes these works to limit the risk to public safety and extend the life
of the trees within the Avenue of Honour.
Works on the trees will be conducted Monday to Friday only during the hours of 8.00am and
5.00pm.
Trafc and other disruptions will be kept to a minimum.
The vehicles are being offered for tender and will be available for inspection on Tuesday 10
February 2015 between 10.00am-10.30am or Wednesday 11 February 2015 between 3.304.00pm only.

Adopt a pet, for life

Give homeless pets in Bacchus Marsh a
lifelong and loving home by participating in
the nationwide Pet Adoption Day from 10am
2pm on Saturday, February 7.
The National Pet Adoption Day is an initiative
of PETstock Assist and animal rescue
organisation PetRescue. The day aims to raise
awareness of pet adoption while encouraging
locals to take action by either adopting a pet of
their own or becoming a pet foster carer.
PetRescue Founder Vickie Davy said they
were working towards a future where adoptive
families could be found for all rescue pets.
In the 10 years since PetRescue was founded
we have re-homed around 250,000 pets
including 70,000 in 2014 alone. We are looking
to further grow this number in 2015, Ms Davy
said.
Its our mission to make adoption the
first choice for all and initiatives such as
Pet Adoption Day put this message in the
spotlight.
Adopting from a rescue organisation means
your new family member will already be
desexed, vaccinated and treated for parasites
and will have had a thorough veterinary and
behaviour assessment.
PETstock CEO Shane Young said no PETstock
store sold dogs or cats. Instead, the stores
encouraged everyone to consider pet adoption
when adding a new member to the family.
On February 7 local animal rescue groups and
pet adoption experts will be in PETstock, 216
Main St, Bacchus Marsh, to share information
about the process of adopting a rescue pet,
the multiple benefits of pet adoption and help
people find their perfect new forever friend.

Community groups can now apply for

Moorabool Shire Councils 2015 Community Development Fund up until
March 13.
Community groups, community networks, progress groups and development associations are invited to submit
an expression of interest for seed funding (and leverage for external funding
opportunities) towards community
infrastructure projects that have a significant impact on community development, liveability and wellbeing in the
shire.

groups to secure some funding and use
this money to get more funding from
other sources for their important community projects, services or events.

Imagination
is magic

Encouraging the magic of a
childs imagination is front
and centre again this year
with a regular performing
arts program.
Imagination Magic, for
children from birth to five
years old, is held monthly
throughout the Shire from
February to November.
Imagination Magic is
sponsored by Council and
provides an interactive activity session for children up
to school age which may include puppetry, storytelling,
singing or playing musical
instruments, with different
performers for each monthly
session, Mayor Paul Tatchell said.
This year the program times

will change, providing more
options for families to access
the program.
There will be a monthly
Wednesday session in Ballan
- except for April and September, when the program
will visit Gordon Hall on a
Tuesday.
There will be Thursday sessions in Bacchus Marsh once
a month, a Monday session
at Wallace Hall in May, and
a dads special session to coincide with Fathers Day.

will be returning in 2015,

new performers, with the
popular African Drumming
starting the year off in Bac-
chus Marsh on Thursday

Australian
ROBIN Philip and Marilyn Rister were

among 14 new Australian citizens recognised
at the Moorabool Australia Day ceremony on
January 26.
The couple were both born in London,
England, however they met in Victoria and
settled in Ballan four years ago.
We searched all over Victoria for
somewhere to live and the only place that
resonated with us was Ballan, Mr Philip
said.
He said the big draws were the landscape,
the people, the train station and the medical
centre.
We couldnt believe we could book an
appointment for the dentist for the following
day, whereas where we came from it took six
months to see a dentist.
He said he moved to Australia 32-years-ago
and becoming a citizen was one of those
things weve been meaning to do for a long
time and never got around to.
Australias our home. We didnt want to go
backwards, so we took this as a new step in
life, he said.
Ms Rister said it was fate that she met Robin
in Australia, and fate that brought them to
Ballan.
We had been to Daylesford and saw the
sign which said Melbourne and Ballan, so
we thought wed stop in Ballan for a cuppa
at the old bakery. We sat outside, looked at
each other and said this feels like home,

she said.
We looked at a block of land for sale straight
after. Your intuition tells you what to do.
Ms Rister has followed her intuition all her
life. When she was 16-years-old she told
her parents she wanted to live in Australia.
She immigrated to Australia with both her
parents soon after.
We were ten pound poms, or at least my
parents were. Ive been here 49 years and as
a British citizen you become a permanent
resident with all the advantages and
obligations and benefits, she said.
My mother became an Australian citizen
in 1980, but I was busy raising kids and never
got around to it until now. I thought, were
here and we vote; its about time we become
permanent citizens. Weve also done a lot of
volunteering in Ballan and wanted to cement
our citizenship because we really do feel like
we belong. Weve met some really lovely
people in Ballan.

Moorabool included Allington and Faith
Gono (Zimbabwe), Arlingtonia and Denzel
Allington (United Kingdom), Ramneet Kaur
(India), Ashmeen Mander (India), Jatinder
Singh (India), Dmytro Myroshnyk (Ukraine),

Initiative has pedal power

Lal Lal primary school students cycled to success last
year, during a student run
community bike ride project.
The grade three to six students, undertaking Civics
and Citizenship Studies,
created the idea for a Lal Lal
Cycling Club, which would
include a group bike ride
each Tuesday over the period of five weeks.

Porteous said the proposal
for the club was created by
one of the school groups,
which was led by grade five
student James Inglis.
The Cycle Clubs inaugural
bike ride kicked off last June,
where 21 prep to grade six
students, three adults and
one local Yendon resident
rode from the school to Lal
Lal Falls.
Ms Porteous said a different ride was investigated by
the students each week, and
planned with consideration
given the surface and hills.
The students certainly
built up some toughness
over the rides, they had so
much fun and exhibited
such enthusiasm, she said.
I asked them to take part
in a project that would involve members of the com-
munity and they did exactly

what they set out to do at
the beginning, which was to
organise five, one hour rides
each Tuesday.
However Ms Porteous
said the final ride, held on
Tuesday November 25, took
about an hour and a half due
to the length of the trail.
The last ride was by far the

most successful, with about
30 riders and five support
crew [riding] all the way to
Yendon and back, which is
about 14-kilometres she
said.
Following the program,
the students were treated
to a presentation from two
experienced Ballarat riders,
which, according to Mrs

Porteous, they found very
inspiring.
[The presenters] were so
motivating that some students are planning to take
part in the Ballarat Autumn
Day Ride next year, where
theyll ride 25km out around
the Smythesdale area, she
said.

Lal Cycling Club going.

2020 goal
is 20 million
trees
The Moorabool Catchment
Landcare Group has secured
$82,000 in funding through
the 20 Million Trees Federal
Landcare Programme.
The $82,000 for the MCLG
will be split over three years
for revegetation and rehabilitation of the landscape between the Wombat State Forest and the Brisbane Ranges
National Park, to establish a
north-south biolink.
A spokesperson said unfortunately, the funding
does not cover fencing for
these projects, so the MCLG
will be looking for other
funding sources to compliment the project.
The Australian Government
will work with the community to plant 20 million trees
by 2020, to re-establish green
corridors and urban forests.
The 20 Million Trees Programme is part of the national stream of the National
Landcare Programme, and
has four strategic objectives:
to plant 20 million trees
and associated understorey
planted by 2020, support local environmental outcomes,
work cooperatively with the
community and reduce carbon emissions.

In 1972 Harry Chapin wrote
a song called Cats in the
Cradle which was a bestselling hit in the USA and
also popular in Australia.
The song has been recorded
a number of times since
and has proved popular
each time. For those of you
who dont know the song
its about a boy growing up
and his relationship with
his father. The boys father
is always too busy to spend
time with his son and one of
the key lines in the song is
the line Im going to be like
him by the son, and when
the father is in his old age
and wishes to spend time
with his son he finds his
son is indeed like him and
has become too busy himself. Being busy about many
things is part and parcel of

our society and has been so
for quite a while now. We
didnt heed Harry Chapins
advice too well. One thing
that especially is suffering
because of this haste is the
environment. It does take
time to smell the roses. Our
environment is crying out
for our attention and we are

A Sydney merchant banker
who worked very long hours
was persuaded by his wife to
take a day off work to spend
some time with his teenage
son David. David pined for
his dads attention, but he
was always too busy. Nevertheless, the banker took a day
off and they spent a magical
day sailing. Although never
repeated, David stored it is
his memory as the wonderful day he spent alone with
his dad. A few years later
the merchant banker died
suddenly of a heart attack
and David, now in his 20s,
found his fathers work diaries when going through his
things. He opened one up

to the date they went sailing. His father had written:

And for those who do
try to smell the roses one
prominent economist could
only explain the downshifting phenomenon by characterising those people as
bludgers.
And this is what, according
to a survey, we actually think
about our current society.

age dont really hang around
with their parents much. I
only see my dad when he is
about to go to bed. We dont
spend time together that
much. Maybe on a Sunday
we might go for a walk at
Manly, (so its) money for
sure 17 Year Old Sydney
boy.
You will never know your
neighbours are there. Real-estate advertisement.
You can see the difference
in the town that the 12 hour
shifts have done. Like sport,

this town has produced some
of the best sportsmen Like
weve got good hockey players, good rugby league players, good golfers, cricketers,
stuff like that But as soon
as the 12-hour shifts started
again, it just killed it. Like
now they struggle to get a
football team, where at one
time we were putting three
teams on the paddock.
And again I would like to

on Victorias auction boom
and the increase in prices
across the state, particularly
since spring 2013, a number
of regional Victorian towns
are yet to reach their peak
property prices of 2010.
Top of the list is Horsham,
with a median price of
$167,500 over the year ending
30 September 2014, almost
$20,000 below its median
for the year to 30 September, 2010. Given that median
prices are slightly below
what they were during the
last market peak, it offers
the prospect that prices have
room for growth.
This is positive news for
sellers, with expected price
growth, and also for buyers looking to buy immediately and seeking affordable
properties.
And Morwell, with a median house price of $160,000
over the 12 months, is about
10 per cent below its 2010
peak providing the potential for positive growth
for Gippsland buyers looking for competitively priced
properties. The well located
town,
nestled
between
coast and country - and on
a key rail link to Melbourne
provides the potential
of an excellent long-term
investment.
With rising Melbourne
house prices leading many
first home buyers and families on a budget to look to

regional Victoria, properties
which have not yet reached
their 2010 peak offer the opportunity of a foothold on
the property ladder. And
although there are no guarantees, they also offer the
prospect of capital growth.
Other centres also below
their 2010 peak include Maffra, eight per cent less at
$225,000, Warrnambool, seven per cent less at $300,000,
Daylesford, four per cent less
at $354,500 and Wodonga,
also four per cent less at
$265,000.
In metropolitan Melbourne
Macrae, on the Mornington
Peninsula, with a median
price of $500,000 topped the
list of suburbs below their
2010 peak. It was 20 per cent
below its 12-month median
of $625,000 median at December 31, 2010.
While the REIV expects
house prices to continue to
remain solid in 2015, the
market is likely to be more
evenly balanced, although
may be given a boost if the
Reserve Bank further lowers
interest rates.
In the next six months we
expect the market to remain
positive. But as the varying
rates of return to peak prices
illustrate, macro factors such
as the unemployment rate
and low wages growth combined with local factors such
as local unemployment levels, infrastructure and transport can all have a bearing
on prices.

agents who can update buyers and those thinking of
selling of market values in
each part of the state, and of
local changes that may have
a bearing on the price of
properties going to market.

Junior Tennis recommenced

last week after the Christmas break. Three teams out
of five that played, recorded
wins.
B Grade played home to
Napoleons and it was a good
day of tennis. Ballan won
both the doubles 6-4. Lachlan Furlong had a battle in
his singles, taking it to a tie
breaker but just missing at
the end going down 5-6. Juukle Casteljn unfortunately
went down in her singles
but then Lachlan Conlan
had a win to make the scores
very even. Owen Robertson
had to win four games in his
singles. which he did, losing
4-6 but it was enough for Ballan to win on the day 29-30.
C1 Grade headed out to
Meredith and it was the four
boys playing well for their
first week back. Mitchell

Furlong and Nicholas Jennings had a good start winning 6-3 with some good
volleys and then they both
won their other doubles
matches, Mitchell with Lachlan Owens 6-2 and Nicholas with Benjamin Davis 6-2.
Nicholas served well with an
ace and with some great rallies, Ballan were winners on
the day, 22-13.
C3 Grade played Buninyong Black at Ballan and
they had a very good start
back to the season with a
very convincing win. The
team played with five players this week. Ethan Bertoncello, Ben Campey and
Adam Furlong all played
two games and Luke Hallett
and Kelsey Josephs played
one set each. All played
very well and their were
some great rallies and serving. Everyone won their sets
making the final score 4 sets
to nil, to record a convincing
24-5 games.
C4 and C5 Grades both had
a bye to start the season.

Bareena started best, but
on the back of Sam Shannahans rink dominating their
opposition before the break,
Avenue managed to sneak to
a two shot advantage.
Bareena again pushed their
home advantage after the
break to clear out to a 14 shot
lead. Avenue lifted and with
10 ends remaining the scores

often provide Avenue with

suggest, particularly as its

11 ends, Bob Delaneys rink
were up by 6 shots after 13
ends and Peter Glass rink
up by 8 shots after 13 ends.
Each of these rinks went on
to win by 8, 3 and 16 shots

Open was indeed a true
test of golf. The wind and
rain may have been a slight
hindrance as players pursued success on a day that
required great patience and
a bag full of creative shots.
With the 2015 Oates Victorian Open starting this
Thursday the 5th February
the unique 13th beach layout

was in fantastic condition
and from all accounts the
juniors certainly enjoyed the
challenge of a true championship course.Despite the
windy conditions on offer on
Sunday the tournament and
the scores produced showed
the bright future for all juniors who competed.
